Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Re: 38MM PWK Slide Sticking
« on: August 07, 2022, 09:52:28 AM »
That slide looks warn out to me with the chrome plating completely worn through in places.

I have had this same issue on a 34mm PJ and replacing the slide fixed the problem for me.

The Mad Scientist / Re: Panthera electric start
« on: May 21, 2022, 12:10:46 PM »
I just saw this tag asking if I saw Rogers panthera run.

Roger's Panthera is in a Sundahl frame that was originally designed for a trx450r engine.  He originally had the pipe that came from Panthera modified so it could be installed in the SRP chassis.  He was unhappy with how this was performing.   He sent the whole thing to Arlen who measured the port timings, and made a pipe to fit the frame.  His cylinder isn't modified by Arlen, still the stock panthera porting, and he also runs a smaller carb because of space limitations.  I believe it's a Keihin PWK bored out as much as possible.

I can only compare it to another friends quad which is a walsh chassis with a 430 puma in it running the newest piston / porting that LED offers with a LED puma pipe.  This quad is running 14/34 and 14/36 gearing and a Mikuni TMX carb off a 2000 CR250.

The puma can keep up with the panthera and they are fairly equal for most of a run,  but the Panthera is able to go faster than the puma and pulls away in high gear because of that.  keep in mind, the rider of the Panthera is roughly 100lbs heavier than the rider on the puma, and runs huge desert tires which i feel is a lot more unsprung weight to spin too

Roger is happy with how the Panthera performs now, and isn't looking for any more power.  He was told that there's more power that could easily be made by modifying the cylinder and head.

I hope this helps,  it's not easy to compare these 2 machines with how different they are.

Suspension and Chassis / Re: nerf bars

I tried ordering a set of factory 43 nerfs a couple months ago through Glenn Turner.   According to him, Factory 43 won't make the evo nerf bars anymore because the fitment is not correct.  He will make them without heel guards.  I haven't ordered a set of Rath yet, but that's the route I plan on going.

Suspension and Chassis / Re: Which swingarm chain slider do I need?

Update

I called TM designworks, talked to someone there and sent pictures over to them.  They sent me the wrong one, this is for a TRX450R.

They are sending me out the correct one, and a return shipping label to them.  Excellent customer support.

I am starting to think I got the wrong one in the kit.  it doesn't look like the style on the website.
I'll reach out to them tomorrow and see what they say.

Suspension and Chassis / Which swingarm chain slider do I need?
« on: August 15, 2021, 02:21:58 PM »
Hi guys,
I bought a TM Designworks kit for the quad with a banshee style slider in it, but it doesn't fit the Laeger swingarm.   The bolt spacing on the swingarm is roughly 1.25 inches where it is roughly 2 inches on the TM Designworks piece.

Does anyone know which slider I need?

Body and Controls / Re: Head Light?
« on: June 04, 2021, 05:08:40 PM »
The headlight getting dim at idle, and getting brighter with rpm to a point is typical with our stator systems.  The way the voltage regulator and stator work in these is at idle, they are making low voltage, but still enough to illuminate the light.  the voltage regulator isn't doing anything at this point.   when you give it some rpm, the voltage regulator kicks in around 14 volts, and shunts the extra voltage that the stator makes to ground to give you a regulated 14 volts or so.  the only purpose of the voltage regulator is to prevent the voltage from the stator from being too much and blowing out the headlight.

If you are having idle problems, i would ty to increase your idle speed a little to prevent it from wanting to die on you.

I finished episode 32 today.  Joe Byrd was my favorite so far.  Lenny announced today that next weeks episode will be Joe Byrd #2.  I have noticed major improvements in audio from the early ones to the current ones.  Thank You Michael for posting about this.  I feel like I gained so much knowledge of the history of the sport by listening to these podcasts

Hybrid 250R / Re: Panthera 550??
« on: November 22, 2020, 05:51:09 PM »
I'd say 100hp is easily obtainable with one, just with modifications.  It also might not be practical at 100hp for your riding style.  A torquey 80 HP is going to be interesting to see none the less.

Josh nailed it with the latest info on Rogers. I also heard Arlan was having issues kicking it with the compression it has.   @marc, From what I hear, they are a nice engine, but don't expect claimed power numbers, and  the pipe that comes with them is mediocre at best.

The Mad Scientist / Re: Case filler

Those voids in the base of the cylinder should be blocked off with gaskets, and not open to the crankcase.

These are used for big bore cylinders on OEM cases. Mainly aluminum sleeved cylinders because of the extra thickness of the cylinder skirt.  The cases are bored out so much that something is needed to fill in that area of the cases.  I believe before these existed they just filled the area with epoxy and machined it out to the size required.
