Well haven't checked in here yet, so here's my weird background. Worked quite a while in a local concrete plant, did a lot of maintenance on equipment, custom mold fabrication, yarded tanks, etc... Eventually got an AOS in machining / CNC technology and worked as a machinist for a long time, mainly mill and lathe work both manual and CNC. The last stint landed me doing hypoid bearing pattern development on Gleason 7-axis CNC bevel grinders. Long story short, it was an aweful job and worked 2pm to 1am. Got laid off in the recession, couldn't find work and went back to school. Got my ME from RIT and now work as a design engineer for a company in the rail industry; we design brake components and brake systems for freight trains.

Allen,
I considered this, but haven't yet tried it.  If I push the seal in to the depth it'd need to be, the sprocket side seal would be .150" below the "surface" of the carrier.  Currently, both seals are flush with each end. Is this how yours ended up? (with one deeper)

Yes, carrier is assembled with twin row bearings and spacer sleeve... which makes it even more weird that one side doesn't fit correctly.

As several of you know, I've been having issues with a Niche carrier I purchased. The manufacturer has agreed to refund my money, however before I send it back I want to be SURE that it is, in fact, wrong.

Issue:
It appears that the sprocket side bearing is .150" too deep; the sprocket hub will wad the seal before it seats against the bearing race. The sprocket side bearing is .150" deeper than the bearing on the brake disk side.

Request:
Can someone with a known-good assembled carrier please measure the depth from the seal face to the bearing race on each side of your carrier and tell me what your measurements are?

This is my first R, and it's a bastardized mess of cob jobs. I don't personally know anyone else that owns one, so I'm heavily relying on the internet and you fine peeps on .org as I have no other point of reference.

On a positive note, I scored a set of pro-peg nerfs, an aluminum airbox with Uni filter and boot, an Alba aluminum gas cap, a Maier race hood, and a DuraBlue adjustable axle of craigslist.

Well, shit got a little interesting after this last post. I was truckin' right along with the reassembly, went to install the new carrier and found it to be way bigger than the swing arm opening. Turns out it's a 3-wheeler swing arm. Naturally I discover this AFTER installing all new bearings into the swing arm and bolting it back onto the chassis. Grr.  To be continued...

I've considered that, but wasn't sure how that would affect the aluminum swing arm. Also, is the ID the same so I can run an 87 bearing kit? If I had an aluminum one to touch it'd be easier to figure out.

Tony, in regards to my recent swing-arm questions... I was thinking maybe I could do the same thing in my situation, but only run the LOWER tabs since my 86 frame doesn't have the upper cross member. This would be a slick quick and dirty way to run an 89 swinger on my 86.

The bike I'm building turns out to have an 85 ATC swing arm on it. I bought an carrier and axle, that obviously won't fit. I'd rather have the proper equipment on the machine, so if anyone has one laying in the shed out back let me know!

I hear you man, the company I'm working for now doesn't have nearly as cool of software as Borg did. I've developed a special hate for Unigraphics NX here! Supposedly they're switching us to Creo / Pro-E, but I have a feeling I'm still going to be griping that it's not SolidWorks.
Anyway back on topic, a buddy of mine is still at Borg and actually does CFD stuff, if you want I can ask him if he'd be willing to do a govt job. Might be a long shot, but I could ask. He works primarily with SolidWorks models, not sure what platform you're in or compatability.
