Riding my R yesterday on some of the dirt roads around here and am trying to break in a new engine. I'd start out and go through the gears then stop, go up through the gears and stop, over and over and over. On one of these runs I got bored and decided to take it up to around 1/2-3/4 throttle and when I did it just died. I was moving so I let the clutch out to try to get going again and nothing. Let it sit for about 10 seconds and then it fired right back up on the first kick. Do you guys think this was a carb/ jetting issue? If so, too rich? Too lean?

Sounds like you need to do a few more heat cycles before you started opening it up so much. You have to heat treat the piston before you can start pouring the power on.

was it warm when you did it?
You may have siezed it, then had it break loose to fire back up again.
that or an eletrical issue would be my first guesses

I was on my second tank of gas- and I rode it gently for about an hour total after that happened with no problems. Hope I didn't hurt anything...

Engine was warm, only goosed the throttle for a second or two and then just lost all power like I turned the key off. Was in gear when this happened and the motor never stopped turning over until I pulled in the clutch.

Had a stock trx c d I that use to do that would get 1/2 way up the hill and nothing ,turn it around and roll back down would start RITE up .sometimes it would just quit for about 2 seconds just enough to spin out half way up .changed ignition system to a cr 250 way better runner now

when it died did it lockup the tires? was it hard to kick the first time after it died like it was stuck?

No, tires didnt lock up, kicking it over was the same as ever and started immediately.

Have you tried to bring it to 1/2-3/4 throttle again? Check all electrical connections. Lean jetting will make a motor cut out like you shut if off. But it has to be pretty lean to do so. Did you do a leak down test on the new motor?

These old CDI's can go out at anytime. Sometimes you start it and it dies and you just can't start it again. Try the next day and starts right up. If you go out for a long ride make sure you got your cell phone with you to get back. LOL!!!!

I'd start by checking the float level, the fuel flow, and the tank vent first.

A bad coil will do this too as soon as you get the windings hot an turn on the Roma it quits

Is it a whole new engine including stator? My buddy had a new engine and had the same problem run for 5 min. No problems. Try to restart and nothing. Went thru everything especially electrical for 3 days straight. Ended up being the INTERMITTENT connector coming from the brand new stator wires into the plastic connector. These then connect to the old wiring harness. Even after ohming them out 1000 times(slight exaggeration) I ended up hard wiring the stator wires to the harness and viola! Fixed. Check the connector for NO PLAY as well as the wires going into the plastic connector. New or not.....

As sky stated, hardwire is the way to go, just put quick connectors on it and bada bing! Make sure you have a solid ground, as well as all other connections too. Definitely sounds electrical to me.
And as far as a break in period goes, I put a new used engine in my R this spring, the day before i had my first ride planned, it was a ct310 that had been sitting for a couple years now, but ran great last time it was run. I put it in, had gas, spark, air, but no fire. Ended up pulling the top end to find the rings frozen and no compression(i had done a compression test and it was at 70lbs, but it was an old tester and i wasnt sure if it was accurate, but it was!). I put a fresh top end that just had a bunch of port work(RB racing aggressive drag port) and head work done to it, on the 310 bottom end, rode it up and down my road 3x before church, came home from church and went duning. I took it easy in the dune 1/2 dune entrance and kept it jetted rich that day and the next ride. I am a firm believer in breaking it in hard, but rich. I only went down 2 jet sizes from there.
