Are the red hoods & tanks from 86-87 the same shade of red as 88 fenders?

Not exactly sure... but i would think they would be since i'm guessing Honda patented the shade "Honda Fighting Red". Fading between OEM pieces i think would be the only issue. Which bike was left outside the longest. Im not exactly sure if Maier or any aftermarket got the shade of red exactly right either. But im no plastic expert.

86 and 87 red is a hair darker than the 88. An 86/87 hood will not match the 88 plastic.

Bummer. I found a set of 88 plastic & was wanting to put it on my wife's 86 because she likes red. I guess the next best thing would be to just keep the white fenders & get a red seat, tank & hood. Thanks for the info.

Its not like the world is going to end. I use the red 86/87 hood on my 88 plastic. You only notice the difference up close. Besides the tank, seat and hood are only a shade different than the fenders
