I bought a few cheap sprockets off of ebay earlier this year.  It appears they are made out of soft steel because they are just about smoked in 6 months.  I want to buy a good set of sprockets and don't know which brand to buy.  I would like to stick with steel.  Thinking JT or Sunstar?   Just looking for something that will last a couple years.....

I have heard that sunstar makes a lot of the oem sprockets but I don't have first hand knowledge.

I've run sun star on a 300ex it was built and it was still on it a year or so later when I sold it. I'm not sure how it would hold up on the r. I had a jt 37t on my 363 and it only lasted 2 or three months.  When I buy my next set I plan on getting a more expensive set. It's worth the extra cost so it doesn't leave you setting. IMO

I've never really had problems with Renthals, but if you don't mind the extra coin Sidewinder sprokets are pretty damn nice.

Ive ran Renthal, Sidewinder and Sunstar. Theyre all good but ive found Sunstar to be the best. Sidewinder is just a plain rip off. When all the Ti sprockets and chain came out I dropped coin on it. The chain and sprockets lasted no longer than my good ole Sunstars. Magic racing (in Michigan) usually has some good deals on the Sunstar chain and sprockets combo. Depending on how much you ride and maintain them, you will probably get a years out of them. Its a once a year thing just like your pivot bearings, axle bearings and whatnot.

Sunstar works for me. I agree about Sidewinder, too pricey for the results. But they will make you a sprocket, of your choosing. I had them make a 33 tooth, for a 300EX many moons ago. Topend freak! :onthego:

Sounds like sun star it is!  I had sidewinder on a banshee years ago and I was happy with them but the price now is just ridiculous!

sprocket specialists.  or JT

I've had good luck with just anything.  Except Krause/Sidewinder.  POS, but that was 20 years ago, I would hope they have improved

My brother bought a Krause chain about twenty years ago that stretched a mile in a couple rides (massive lt250 power). They must have improved or they'd be out of business. Sunstar and JT have been good sprockets for me.

I have the old Nac's rebel gears,Renthal,Sprocket Specialist,Sunstar.  They all seem pretty good.  I even ended up with a blue 37t Sidewinder I gave my cousin today to try on his 400ex.  He's trying to beat my other cousin's 88250r.  I told him good luck....long live the "R"!

I've always had good luck with sunstar, the only sprocket I had bad luck with was an aluminum one (don't remember the brand) but I only ride my R in the sand which seems to ware sprockets out a little faster than dirt riding.

I have been running sidewinders for well over 20 years. Never had a single problem with any set I bought. I could get a full season (racing every weekend) out of the aluminum ones. My current 450 has had the same set for over 5 years. Sand, mx, Baja, and ice, they have seen it all and still going strong. It surprises me when I read people having problems with them.

Sidewinder has been amazing but ran them with a top of the line RK chain which has been A+ also.
