looking at new elka shocks need input?
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:20:08 PM »
i am needing to get a set of shocks for the R and have found that i can get stage 3 elka fronts and rear for $799 shipped from either racing powersports out of texas or ATV Galaxy both through ebay setup properly for my weight and riding style. for the money is there really any downside to the elkas. ive never used them before but have heard good things. I dont race just trail ride. So are they a good choice or should i just have my current setup revalved and sprung for me which include 450r front shocks and stock rear all setup for the R and #130 rider by GTthunder when it was going to be my sons bike. now that he has lost interest i was thinking instead of having them revalved i would by shocks setup for me and keep th GTthunder setup for if my son ever decides he wants to ride it again.

For the price of Elka's right now I would do it. Only different think I would do is order directly from Elka. They are doing the same pricing and you cut out the middle man.

For that really low price for the Elkas, my guess is you'd be better off going with them. By the time you get the 450r and stock rear all done correctly it'll probably be about the same price, but with less capabilities.

I would call Maul Tech ATV and see what his opinion is. He'll point you in the right direction. He also took over  GThunder's old line of shocks after the owner died.

are they GThunder's line of HLS shocks? Or are they reworked stockers?

there rebuilt stockers the front 450r shocks he shortened to work on a 250r. the rear is just a revalved and resprung 250r shock. Laz was awesome to deal with.

Here's my honest opinion on the Elka deal.  I've been receiving calls on this daily.  To make these shocks work to our standards they will have to be completely modified from spring rating, extended and compressed lengths and valving.  Yes, these are better than stock but if you're going to spend your hard earned money wouldn't you rather have them right rather that just better?

Hmmmm.  I have not heard a lot of negative reviews about the elkas.  Thought they might be just what I need, since I am not racing and jumpimg 90 foot triples. I hope I didn't waste my money.  :frown-new:

I have heard this many times over the years on other forums that people bought shocks from Elka and the valving and springs were not right for what they needed (weight, type of riding). Then they had to send out brand new shocks to someone else to redo them.
