2001 CR250 CDI Replacement
« on: March 06, 2016, 09:17:05 PM »
I know this has been talked about in the past but I haven't seen much posted since 2014. What is everyone doing about the 01 CR250 CDI being discontinued? Is there any reliable aftermarket options? Is anyone having good results using a different year or different model like the 125 cdi? Is the 01 CR250 ignition still really the best option all together? There has to be some new information we can compile. Thanks guys

I know the 125 cdi plugs right in but the timing curve is much more aggressive on it.  I bought one a while ago but have been afraid to try it.  RSS396 did some charts on here a while ago.

Yeah I remember something about that. I'm scared to try it too because with just a stock cylinder right now I'm struggling with the bottom end to the point that I'm thinking about experimenting with some of the stealthy flywheel weights. I wouldn't want it to be any more peaky than it is.

If I remember right, I think folks are using the later models of CR ignitions, like above the 2002 year model. I know ESR offering a new adapter plate for them, because the newer model bolt up different from the older ones.
One thing I know for sure, either year of the CR ignition systems, have that much lighter flywheel than the stock OEM TRX has, so some type of weight will be needed or else you'll have that snap the lighter flywheel will give the engine.

Yeah I'm just looking for a happy medium between the two. I'm starting another motor build right now and I'm just trying to make sure I'll have a Cdi if I go with the 01 setup again or see if guys like the later model ones better.

I have the 2001 setup and it's been the best thing I've ever purchased for my R... Honestly I wish I hadn't waited so long to buy one. I ran it in my 330 and couldn't tell any difference as far as losing bottom end power but maybe the smaller engines are different?   I know a lot of guys are using the 2002 -07 models but I don't have any feedback on them, I've heard they are great but the power curve isn't as good or broad as the 01.

If your building a new motor and the funds allow for it maybe try stepping up to a 310 power valve or even a 330 non pv I think they are close to the Same price... What kind of pipe are you running? What gearing and size tires?  Maybe a change in one of those could help with the bottom end... Idk just trying to throw some stuff out there to think about

That's good info. So according to that the 01 Cr250 cdi does look the most desirable but the 00 isn't far off. I wonder now if there is any reliable aftermarket replacements for the 01.

I will be stepping up in the near future but I want to get the few stock cylinders that I have running good so I have a couple backups. Just switched to the LED 250E pipe and it helped a lot but I'm thinking I can still get in dialed in better.

i use have the 00 or 01 (i cant remember for sure which) 250 on my 363 and i love it. imho a smaller bore stock stroke would benefit from using a 125 cdi. i dont think there are any aftermarket reliable ones. at least not when i looked about a year ago. the later model 250 ones will also work just fine. you will most likely not be able to tell the difference between the holey grail 01 cdi vs a a 2002+ cdi in the seat of your pants dyno. its mostly all hype and they all will give you a night and day difference over stock.

Service Honda can get a Vortex 01 CR250 CDI for $536.. Ouch! It's programmable though and you can switch curves on the fly with the handlebar switch.

There's a source that bought out Honda of all it's 01 CR igns. All OEM straight from Japan but without the Honda packaging. Thank God for that source or else we would all be lost of Honda OEM parts (without the Honda packaging)
