Rear light compatability question
« on: May 08, 2016, 09:45:48 AM »
I am curious if anyone has put a 400ex or 450r brake light on their 250r and which one would require less manipulation of the bracket?  I don't really like any of the cheap kits off of eBay so I am looking at other options.  Any info or experience with this swap would be appreciated.

I can see which fits this evening when I get home, I know you will need a plug off a 450 to make it work.

I would totally take you up on that but I was not looking pure OEM because I want to get adventurous and tie it into my brakes.  That's why I was thinking 400 or 450r because of the double filament.  I want modern features but Honda quality if that makes sense lol

Makes perfect sense. That's a cool idea putting a break light on an R. Now you got me thinking about doing the same thing. Post pics of what you come up with.

The light and mounting for taillight is the easy part. Mounting the brake switch and making it functional, more of a obstacle. U can do it!

Thanks, I did some research and it can be done.  I ride with a group of guys that ride razrs and sometimes we have to jump on a larger road on our rides.  I have no problem keeping up lol but it does make it illegal.  I am gonna keep it simple and go from the original tail light wires to a switch off the banjo bolt on the rear brakes and to the new light.  This will require me to have the light switch on at the same time which is no biggie to me.  It will take me a couple of weeks but I'll post pics when I do.

The 04 back 400's didn't have a stop light it was just a brake light, the 04 4 does I'll check to see what the difference in grab bar mounting is in a bit, as for the switch you'll need the 450 set up.

With an 88 frame you can space and length the bolt mounting on a stock 450r grab bar as well as the master cylinder would work and from the looks the switch is bolted to the master cylinder. 86 frame has a longer rear mounting broken1 he sent me the measurements and they are roughly 5 3/8" bolt spread.

Thanks for the measurement.  That looks pretty close to what I need.

Well it works.  It was actually quite easy.  I went with an aftermarket light and fabbed up a little bracket to make up the space to the original bracket.

I took the easy route and put it in the same circuit as the oem taillight which means I need to have one of my sets of headlights on for it to work which I'm ok with.  Also I made it even easier by only going off the rear brakes.  I used a banjo bolt that also controls an electrical flow with two leads on it.  It can be done to go off the front brakes as well but I didn't do it.  I am very "risk adverse" when it comes to messing with a 30 yr old wiring harness and don't want to mess it up.  I used the original bullet connectors heading to the oem taillight and ran one power and ground directly to the light with an additional power going to the banjo switch and then to the stop light.
