Author Topic: Frozen carrier need help (Read 6111 times)

Title says it, my carrier is frozen. Won't spin either way to adjust chain tension. I only have around 5 hours of ride time on it, and when I installed it I loaded it up with antiseize. I tried with all my might and a 24" pipe wrench, and can't get it to budge. The axle is out, I'm replacing a bent axle. I have the tabs wedged open, I lifted the weight of the quad with the pipe wrench, and even tried thumping it with a bfh, and it still won't budge.
Originally it was snug going in, but spun fine the first time I adjusted the chain slack.
So I tried to just get the entire carrier out, by tapping it with a hammer and a piece of 2x4, and it just won't move. I don't want to try to just beat it out, because I'm affraid to f**k something up and bend or break something with the side force.
Anybody have any suggestion or ideas how I can get it out without pulling the swinger off and pressing it out?
I'm guessing that the powder coat that was sprayed inside the carrier race is breaking and binding it up.

Only thing I can think of that might help is lube. WD-40 or my favorite Aerokroil. I have had to apply some motivation to a few carriers. Plenty of lube solved most problems. Good luck

Is it possible the carrier or carrier housing is bent?

Visually carrier does not look bent, its square to the carrier housing, and the housing itself doesn't seem out of round or anything.
After soaking in areokroil overnight I did get it to break loose and spin in one direction, but not easly, it took my weight of 280lbs standing on a 24" pipe wrench with a foot cheater on it. Can't get it to spin the other direction or can't get it to pull out. Tied slipping a pipe big enough to fit over the chain side of the carrier with a 2 ton chain hooked on the pipe end and pressing it out with a bottle jack. Had enough preassure on it to break the chain.
Not sure if the carrier is burred maybe or the powder coat broke apart and is causing it to bind, or what. It was a brand new carrier that is all chewed to hell now from the pipe wrench, so I'm going to buy another. Think mu only options are pop the bearings, and try to cut it out, or pull the swinger off and have it pressed out.
The agony, all for a bent axle, and sproket change.

Might be able to cut it from the back with a good Wheel and just rotate it to different places.

Wish I knew what kind of axle it was, so I could maybe try to get it replaced on a warrenty, but there is no makers marks or stamping of any kind on it. It's definitely a +2+4 aftermarket axle. Would probably be a long shot though since I'm not the purchaser, and don't have a warrenty card. But worth a shot.

Kind of what I was thinking, but in the air if it would just be easier to pull the swinger off. The swinger should come right off, its only been together 5 hours of ride time total, and I antiseized the hell out of the inside of the bushings and bolt shafts.

Is this a stock swinger? My 86 swinger has a bolt going through the housing and presses against the carrier that I assume keeps the carrier from over rotating. Did you remove that(if you have one)? Or is there a chance the bolt is busted off flush with the housing? Hopefully I don't sound condescending. Good luck Loren

what swinger ? did ya remove the clamping bolts completely out of the swing arm an use 2 flat head screw drivers or wedges to spread the clamping bolt holes open ? this would help alot if its stuck. i cannot believe it would need to be pressed out with 5 hrs ride time , it should slide right on out. i gotta ask did ya take the snap ring off the brake stay ?

Stock 86 swinger, yes the bolt is removed and not broken , and the pinch bolts are completely out. Tabs are being held open with a 3/8" extension, snap ring is off, brake stay is off.
5 hours ride time, never seen water or dampness, inside of carrier housing is powdered, so I know its not rusted in. Originally it was a little tight going in, but did not need forced. I don't understand at all how tight it is in there, itvstill takes a pipe wrench and me standing on it for it to spin. Something weather its the powder or dirt got in there is causing it to bind up, and not budge.

What carrier do you have in there, stock/aftermarket? Did the axle & axle bearings spin freely when you took the axle out? Just wondering if the axle bearings are bad & got the carrier hot enough to melt the PC inside the carrier housing?

I think your going to have to force it out. If you don't have access to a press or you don't want to take the swinger off you could use a "C" clamp to apply pressure while you hit the sob with a hammer.

You wouldn't be worried about the side force from whacking it with a bfh? I'm a little nervous to go whacking away, afraid the side force may damage the bushings, or crack a weld on the frame.
