KFX 450 Font Shocks on a 250 R
« on: May 16, 2016, 10:37:07 AM »
Howdy,

I recently blew the seals on my stock shocks (1987 250R) and am looking to replace them. I am not looking to spent over $200 and luckily i can find stock front shocks off of 450's in my price range. I have looked at the front shock lengths off of the TRX 450, YFZ 450, Predator, DS 450, and KFX 450, and at this point am only considering the KFX and TRX.

The KFX 450's front shocks can be found for $50-75 cheaper than the TRX 450 shocks and there are more KFX 450 shocks on Ebay than TRX 450 Shocks. However, I know that with some light conversion work the TRX 450 Shocks will fit my 1987 250R. What i am hoping to figure out is if the KFX 450 Front shocks will fit a stock 1987 250 R ?

As always thanks for your time.

I think you're going to run into problems finding shocks off a 450 and putting them on. You're better off finding used shocks on here or the FB page that area already the correct length. You're a bit handcuffed at $200 but I think you can find something

Yfz 450 shocks work but you have to grind down the meat a bit on top of the shock. Just a little grinding and they drop right in.

Thank you for the idea. Do you know about the yfz shocks first hand, or have you heard this? I ask not to be a jerk, but because I am interested. Originally I removed the yfz from the list because i saw that it has shorter stocks and didn't want to lower my front end. What do you know about the effect on the geometry of a 250r with yfz shocks?

Thanks for helping me out;

yfz 450 shocks are 15 3/4". That is the same length as my R shocks. If you look at the top eye of the yfz shock you will see how meaty it is. Just need to shave a little to get it to fit. Will not effect the performance of the shock.

I got about 4 or 5 sets of stock shocks. You can have a set for the cost of shipping if you want to go that route.

The KFX 450's front shocks do work. As with the other 450's shocks there is some grinding involved, but for around $120-$150 you can get modern suspension on a 250 R. And the KFX 450 has the exact same length shocks eye-to-eye as the stock 250 R front shocks.

So i got a pair of used KFX 450 shocks and had to do some grinding to get them on, but they are immensely better!
