Cleaning your R after a trip... What methods are you guys using?
« on: November 29, 2018, 01:51:00 PM »
What method do you guys prefer for clean up? I'm looking into getting a pressure washer to help with clean up after some of these muddy rides and am curious of what others use.

Most of you dune guys probably don't have to use very much elbow grease lol, but here in Alabama it get's nasty during the colder months. Hand washing was a 2-3 hour job last time and honestly it keeps me from casual riding after it's clean. After that much work I don't want to get it nasty again for a trip around my property.

I used an electric pressure washer at one point in time and I absolutely hated it. Dragging that extra cord around really sucked. Also makes you weary of getting any water on it. I picked up a used Troy-Bilt unit with Honda motor and it's worked great so far.

I'd like to find a good soap to use in conjunction with the pressure washer. I think Maxima and a few others have them but I've never tried them.

Thanks for the info Tbone. I spent a lot of time running a Troy-Bilt washer we had growing up. Ya know I think that thing might still be in my dads garage in working order.

I for some reason thought maybe the electric would be simple and quieter and just easier to deal with for a quick quad wash, but you make a good point.

I used regular car wash last time (probably not appropriate) but it is what I had. For the splooge I had acquired under the head pipe I used Greased Lightning and it seemed to work extremely well. Post up what chemicals you guys are using as well.

Mud is a different beast.  I just spray my bikes down quite a bit with lots of water to get the salt residue off.  If there's much grime from exhaust, chain, etc. I generally clean that ahead with something like mineral spirits.  Then dry with a leaf blower.

I start with pulling the plastic & tank, removing the filter & plugging the intake boot. Than I stand it up & remove the chain & belly skid than wash it up with car wash soap & a wash mit. It's a 2-3hour process & I go overboard with cleaning but I see it as a good opportunity to thoroughly inspect it for any potential problems.

Good stuff guys.

Havinnoj, I'm going to give the mineral spirits a try. Probably a little safer than the concentrated Greased Lightning I used.

broken1, we do it the same way lol. I actually did not remove my tank, but noted that it would be needed next time. Sounds like the car wash is fine to use.

I use a cheap cleaner called awesome. I find it in my local dollar store.  Get this...... Each bottle is only a dollar! I also bought a 1gal poison sprayer that I fill with awesome. I hose down my quads, dirt bikes, tractor, side walk, or what ever I want clean. Then I use my garden hose for the quads and dirt bikes to spray the crud off. On everything else I use the pressure washer.

Myles make sure you don't let the awesome sit on aluminum for very long. Or dilute it according to the directions

I'm thinking about trying a few products like these:

https://www.maximausa.com/product/bio-wash/

...of course I actually have to ride my quad and get it dirty before I get this far

Nice find Tbone. I think I'm going to give one or both a try myself.
