Feb 2020 Oregon Dunes

Saw a break in weather and hit the dunes last minute.  Sand is heavy-soft and torn up but weather is great!

Next weekend is usually my first trip of the year.  Not going to make it this year so I have been trying hard to not get depressed. Now you post those pictures! That blue sky and storm ravaged dunes! Man now I am depressed!!!!

Amazes me what the wind and rain do to the dunes up there.   We don’t get enough rain in California to do anything like that to the dunes.

Some of my best rides in the sand have been on rainy days. Traction, cooler temps let it lean out a bit, usually no one is out riding and a lot of the time the sand is smooth (other than the tracks I am making).

I remember going to Sandlake in the winter of 87 or 88 when there was snow on the dunes. There was only 1-2" but it was everywhere & as a 12 year old kid cruising around on a 350x I was having a blast & felt like I was tearing it up on the moon.

I remember riding out of Florance on Thanksgiving weekend. Sand was hard and the mist was heavy, we got wet but not too cold. The place was empty. Stayed at an RV park (KOA ?)close to the sand. There were some large wind blown edges on some of the dunes that were scary if you weren't careful. The trails through the grasses were great to run at speed, This was a loooong time ago. I bought a rifle at Walmart on the way home.

Pumashine posted some crazy pics of some treacherous dunes a few years back.

Ya, the windward side can look perfect, but a 2/3 foot overhang will really wreck your day, if you get too close/go over the other side when it collapses.

Yeah heavy (wet) sand with wind really does a number to the backside of the dunes.  Look at the last pic I posted - that's the back side of the big dune out of the 3rd parking lot!!
