A buddies take out engine score a couple years ago.  It’s still unbelievable how many 85 take out engines are out there.

From what I understand the frames were cut up.

In the Seattle metro area, they were all sent back to the distribution hub and cut up. That was cheaper then sending them back to Japan. We got a call and took a truck to pick up motors, we got somewhere in the 30/40 units. Honda wanted to be sure they didn't hit EBay or Craigslist, but that was a long time ago, and I've seen plenty of them for sale, but they have been sitting for 30+ years in somebodies basement.
I had a 98 Honda Accord coupe with leather for training purposes, and when we were done with it, Honda sent a wrecker to pick it up. Honda had signed agreements with wrecking yards that they would go straight to the crusher, with no parts sold off them. This car didn't even have a complete VIN number on it. No titles, no paperwork.

You picked up 30/40 R engines from a Honda distribution hub to keep them from being sold on ebay or craigslist? We're these sitting in the distribution hub for awhile because neither ebay or Craigslist existed back in 1987 when Honda turned all their trikes into nothing more than take out engines

Well, of course Craigslist and Ebay didn't exist back then, but I meant sales avenues like that. Like the listings in the paper, or in the back of Dirt Bike, or Dirt Wheels, and other magazines of the time.

What did you do with all of them?

Some were given away, most were cut/sectioned into display projects by High School students, then after grading, either taken home, left as examples, or disposed of. This took several years. Some of the carbs were used for other things (legends race car) and many used for smaller cut away's by students. I had 3 '86' 350X motors that I kept, finally selling one, keeping one, and I don't remember exactly what happened to the third. I have one in my 'R' that is close to finished, with all the pieces/smaller assemblies done. Those motors sat in my garage for at least 15 years, before I decided to do something with them.

thats odd.  you would think the take outs would be 86s as the 85s should have all been sold.  It was 1988 when the ban went into effect.  In a good faith effort, I suppose it was mid 1987 when honda decided to start cutting up existing models in dealerships?  Anyone know when Honda put out the word to dealers?

Yes very odd as most of the take outs were 85 atc250R engines.  I’ve only seen a few 86 atc250R “take outs”.  I recently seen a post (on a social media page) that brings up some interesting things.  It has spiked my curiousity more now than ever.

Somewhere I have a VHS tape with an episode of 20/20 or 60 minutes (don't remember which one it was) that was aired back in the late 80's about the demise of 3-wheeler's. For whatever reason Honda got a target on their back & they took the brunt of it all.
