thats odd. you would think the take outs would be 86s as the 85s should have all been sold. It was 1988 when the ban went into effect. In a good faith effort, I suppose it was mid 1987 when honda decided to start cutting up existing models in dealerships? Anyone know when Honda put out the word to dealers?
Yes very odd as most of the take outs were 85 atc250R engines. I’ve only seen a few 86 atc250R “take outs”. I recently seen a post (on a social media page) that brings up some interesting things. It has spiked my curiousity more now than ever.

Joseph Ivanac This is where I stand on this...I worked for Honda from 1981-1995.....I was in the Parts division of Honda.....During that time you could never order a complete engine that I know of...You always had to order the Parts....left case right case etc......I was at Honda during the consent decree period and personally saw them cutting up ATC frames at the Meico warehouse in Carson California....At that time Honda stripped all of the electricals, exhaust suspension parts, wheels tires, seats , tanks, fenders and returned everything but the wheels/tires to stock....Thats because the tires were already mounted on the wheels....The wheels/tires were loaded onto pallets and sold to the dealers for $50 dollars a pallet...A lot of people don't know this but some of their ATC's probably have 87 parts on them as if replacement parts were bought from the dealer they were probably 87 parts.....Anyways....All the motors from those 87's were pulled and given to the dealers if the dealer filed a special request .Those motors included everything from a 200x 350x 250r 250e motor...Any 87 model ATC motor was available .These motors were supposed to go to Automotive classes in High Schools or Colleges but a lot of dealers kept them for themselves and sold them....Again let me state....During the time I was employed by Honda, ANY warranty work involving engine repair was determined by the mechanic who then had the Parts manager order new parts. A warranty claim was filled out and the defective parts returned. Actually this was for any defective part on the motorcycle or ATV not just the engine...And again parts were ordered to fix the defective engine not a complete motor...So I have no idea how someone could have a "brand new" take out 1985 motor when Honda didn't operate that way...IMO that person got taken by someone claiming it was a take out motor....But that's my opinion.....So I don't mean to be harsh but you can take my word as someone that was there and worked for Honda....Or listen to someone that didn't work for Honda and probably was to young to know much at the time this all happened...
