85 R transformation
« on: May 14, 2021, 10:01:09 AM »
I picked up this 85 around Feb/March this year off facebook and the owner said it's in good shape and would be ready to ride. I drove from NJ to VA to pick it up and I wasn't thrilled in the condition but just drove 7hrs for this turd so I wasn't going home without it. The first thing I did was rebuild the forks since they were shot and so was the rear shock but I could live with that for a while. I had an ignition issue that I wound up replacing every component along with a new harness. He had a cdi from a 200S in it so it ran like shit. Cleaned the carb, put new reeds in it, billet exhaust flange and new springs, found a used FMF pipe and repacked the FMF silencer that came with the bike. New plastics, seat cover, repro front brake line, rad hoses and cap along with coolant flush and oil change. New handlebars/grips, front m/cyl, chain/sprockets and new oem chain slider since there was nothing there. It's come a long way in these few months with help from this forum and 250R.Net and now it runs great and I just replaced the rear shock and what a difference in handling/braking that made compared to the pogo stick like blown shock. I wish I would have waited to find a cleaner more original trike but I'm impatient and I'm happy with it now and confident I could take it riding and not have any problems. It's on a 66.5mm piston which was brand new when I got the bike and has a CR head gasket and this thing rips on pump gas with no detonation. It's not the best looking R but it's a good rider and I plan on beating it every chance I get.

Good story and a better job of restoration. Looks great. All the hard work and late nights in the shop pays dividends. Enjoy! 🤗

Thanks! I keep it at work and have spent almost every weekend here playing with it. Next on the list is to tackle wet sanding and polishing the tank and want to do the wheels too. Then I want to rebuild the calipers and I think that'll be it for a while.

Thanks guys. I had an 85 R, Tri-Z and 350x at different times and the R was always my favorite and I’ve always wanted to get one again and I’ll never sell this one. I’m working on jetting it now and have it close but it feels like a dead spot at partial throttle in lower gears and it clears out shifting to 3rd and it stands up and takes off. I just changed from a 45 to 42 pilot since I could turn the air screw basically all the way out and the idle wouldn’t go much higher. It’s got a 155 main but only have bigger jets on hand so I have to order a few smaller jets and try it out. It’s kind of a pain messing with jetting but it’s also fun at the same time because it helps me learn how it should sound and run when it’s right.
