gas leak
« on: June 08, 2021, 04:00:50 PM »
my R was running fine I put it up and the next day try to start and sounds flooded and wont start. After checking a few things I notice there is fuel pouring out one of the air lines from the carb. I assume its the overflow line, I'm not sure anyway anyone know why it is pouring fuel out the overflow line like it that????? this is not a trickle you turn the gas on and it pours out.  thanks

I would say you have a float/float needle issue.

If it is all the sudden and is pouring out, you have a stuck float. You can gently tap the sides of the float bowl to try to loosen it. Otherwise pulll the carb and remove the float bowl. Float bowl screws have a tendency to strip, they are very soft. Make sure the head is really clean and you have a good screw driver.

how do I fix the problem ? just clean the carb. with carb. cleaner or do I need to adjust the floats or float needle?
I would think everything is still adjusted properly since it went from running fine to pouring gas out. My own opinion...lol      I took the carb. off last night and there was some build up on the floats but the rest looked alright. I'm going to buy some cleaner today and clean it well since I already have it off my R.

Shake the float & make sure there's no fuel inside of them also. Haven't had it happen on an R but I've found pin holes in carb floats before that allowed them to fill up than sink.

Truth to that. Floats can get holes and fill up. Check the valve needle and needle seat. They can build up varish, which keeps the valve from seating. Also the rubber can harden causing a poor seal.

With the float bowl off you can put the float, pin and neele back together. Make sure the float can easily pivot on the pin. Plug the fuel line back inti the carb. Turn on the gas and you can manually move the float/needle up and down to see if you are getting a good seal and flowing properly. Might want to do this over a bucket or pan to catch any gas. It's also a decent way to see the float adjustment. Once the top of the float is parallel to the carb body the valve should be completely shut.
