This modification has always had me looking at it a little funny... I did rough calculation on the CR spring vs the 88-9, and the CR spring is roughly the same rate, but shorter.I imagine the 400ex plate could be skipped, along with the thrust bearing washer if the stock 88-9 springs were used (or barnett, etc spring) with the al washer instead of the CR springs. Neil I think used to also recommend scuffing the 400ex plate too to make it more abrasive, which isn't a great solution, so I'm not sure how much thought he put into it when he came up with this mod for his races. Either way, I suspect that increasing clamping force is more desireable than moving the pressure plate further from the basket to increase spring tension. The spring tension at a given compression level can be measured fairly easily with a drill press and a scale.
