Neil Clutch mod update or changes?

before i spend $250 on OEM parts, are there any updates to the neil clutch mod from this closed thread?  On the second page there was discussion about different washers to use instead of the drain plug washers and using a different steel than the 400ex one.

I’m reading it as fine tuning it with custom thickness washers to save some money.  You’d have to have them custom made or maybe something is available from McMaster Carr

I had great success with the Neil clutch mod on a 310 for several years.

I thought you all might come up with a thickness everyone could use and I would make a bunch of washers for out community. But it never seemed to happen. Good luck, We only were able to come up with different thicknesses of washers to help with the difference of clutch push rods. I still have those sets.

nevermind. I thought the 400ex washer replaced the 250r washer.  But now I see what’s going.  You use both. 
70 in lb enough torque for the bolts?

This modification has always had me looking at it a little funny... I did rough calculation on the CR spring vs the 88-9, and the CR spring is roughly the same rate, but shorter.I imagine the 400ex plate could be skipped, along with the thrust bearing washer if the stock 88-9 springs were used (or barnett, etc  spring) with the al washer instead of the CR springs. Neil I think used to also recommend scuffing the 400ex plate too to make it more abrasive, which isn't a great solution, so I'm not sure how much thought he put into it when he came up with this mod for his races. Either way, I suspect that increasing clamping force is more desireable than moving the pressure plate further from the basket to increase spring tension. The spring tension at a given compression level can be measured fairly easily with a drill press and a scale.
