Billet Cases - Case Saver Alternative
« on: March 14, 2023, 12:03:41 PM »
Since the release of the ModQuad billet cases, only one company has offered a case saver that fits properly.
For those of you that may not know, the ModQuad billet cases do not share the same mounting locations as OEM / ESR cases.

Although they absolutely serve their purpose, I have always strongly disliked the look and finish quality of the Polyurethane or UHMW case savers.
Can they absorb more of an impact? Of course.  Do they look ugly as hell while saving your cases? Yes!  ;D

After building a billet ModQuad motor for myself as well a few customers, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands and design a case saver made from billet aluminum (Something that will shine!).  I began with 3D scanning a billet left side case half and transferred that scan data into Solidworks to have a reference to model off of.  Below are some photos of my quick & dirty design.  Ironically, I will be machining a test piece from plastic to check fitment before machining from aluminum.  If anyone has any constructive feedback I am certainly all ears!  I don't have plans to mass produce these, but more so wanted to share what I have been working on with the rest of the forum.

Thanks!

Blake, nice work.  I’d like to see it without the milled pocket.

That's awesome. What do you use for a 3d scanner?

Very cool Blake, any ballpark pricing on these so far?

I machined a prototype and was happy with the fitment.  We will start on a run of 6061 aluminum ones next week.
These will fit a 15 tooth sprocket if anyone is concerned.  Thanks!

i would think you would want it slightly closer to the clutch rod tower for support?   right now it looks like its only touching the bottom angle cut of the clutch rod tower and maybe the stator cover.
The poly ones on a stock case are snug up against all those places, which i presume gives it more area to spread out the force on a chain de-rail

But either way, great job on the initiative to come up with something

A case saver looses it's effectiveness as the distance increases between the chain on the sprocket and the case saver.  A different case saver should be made for each tooth count on the countershaft sprocket!

Nice work Blake, always good to see more innovated parts being made for the 250R.

I should have noted that after fitting up the delrin test part, I did close the gap in the model.
On the aluminum production parts you won't see a gap.
