2nd Engine rebuild
« on: July 17, 2023, 03:43:15 AM »
This engine came out of my wife's 86 7 years ago after I found a bad stator side crank bearing & its been sitting in a couple of totes ever since. Over the weekend I finally got around to blasting & painting the cases. I did another 86 engine 2 years ago that's basically identical to this one only I'm trying some Spraymax 2k matte clear on this engine & hoping for better chip resistance:

The difference between clear coat & none:

All these parts are finally getting used. There's an 85 take out crank for it as well hiding in a dark location in a secure box..... thanks to Joe:

Looking good Kevin. I can't believe a take out part made it out of Joe's top secret vault!

What color paint is the VHT? In Duplicolor it's "storm gray".

Looks nice. That Spray Max 2K is the bomb. I have used thatmany times on new headlight lens, to prevent the hazing caused by UV rays. Holds up very well.

Thank you, that's good to hear about the 2k clear coat. When I painted the other engine with the same VHT paint, while it looked nice it didn't end up being very chip or chemical resistant even after oven curing per the directions on the can... The engine paint is VHT SP997 Cast Iron.

Got this engine buttoned up a few weeks ago, now I just have to clean up the R a little so it doesn't make the engine look bad :) Everything went together smooth during assembly & other than finding a slight leak in my tester it passed the leakdown so it's good to go.

The crank that made it out of Joe's secure vault:

With a little heat from a heat gun all the oem bearings dropped right in:

Went through the transmission & replaced washers/bushings as needed. Luckily most of it was in good shape:

Cases slid right back together easily:

Had the cylinder bored 6 years ago & broke it in/ran it for one weekend on another engine so it's all ready to go. Nothing fancy, just home clean up porting & a 66.75 wiseco piston with an ATC head gasket for a little more compression:

All done & ready to go in the frame:

Thanks for looking

that's a beautiful oe crankshaft. I like the short rod with ported 85-6 cylinders myself too.
