I’m new and can’t find it. Port work
« on: January 14, 2024, 09:04:04 PM »
Sorry I’m new and having trouble finding people who still does port work. So as of 2024 who still does port work and head mods that can bore a cylinder. I know a lot of the top big name companies have very long wait times. Curious if there is anyone people would recommend. I’ve been out of 250rs for a while and know a lot of people have gotten out of the sport and retired. Thanks for any advice. And sorry if this has been asked hope I put it in the right spot

Welcome to ORG.  Where are you located?  Yes all the big name shops are busy.  Maybe we can find a reputable smaller shop near you.

What is the primary goal/problem solved for the engine?
eg, stock engine needing basic performance setup and maintenance -> 99% of possible peak power for a given displacement.

It is due for a bore job so figured while it was apart I’d have it ported n gain a lil power

Welcome
Is Bubba not taking on any work? He is in Arkansas. Many of us deal with west coast builders. Personally I would just send it out to LED if you can not find a reputable candidate local to you. He is always busy but his knowledge with these motors are endless. He is one stop shop. You'll get your fresh bore and port along with piston rings and gaskets. And most times you'll get your parts back faster than your original quoted time frame

If it's stock, that's not too difficult of a build requirement. If it's not, you may need the builder to tell you where things are currently and make recommendations depending on what you want to experience when riding it, your skill level, terrain, budget and capacity for maintenance.

The stock system is very docile by design, so it's easy to improve it. A basic setup for something resembling a CR250R type spec with an OE cyl, the project should include everything in between carburetor and pipe. If not, porting isn't super beneficial, and you can probably get away with reeds, carb and cylinder head design and if budget allows, a pipe. If you go big-bore, a lot of the detailed design is less important because you can rely more on simply adding displacement. The downside to this for me personally is the added vibration. If you do a detailed design on a big-bore you can make a lot of eye-blurring, straight line power, but may require a high budget. Personally, I think the best use of the TRX250R's design is as an MX bike, so is in the relationship between the engine and cornering, and less in raw HP numbers. Riding the edge of stability in a high speed corner and transitions with a properly setup R is one of the best things life has to offer.

Lastly, don't neglect the bottom end's maintenance. Honda designed it very well, but even Japanese bearings wear out and will come apart inside the engine. If you're not sure when this was done last and to what level of quality, it has to be done as the first priority, performance second.

If some of the more common 250r builders are not taking new work I would recommend Ken O'Connor as he built and ported a 250r engine for me many years ago and it was more than satisfactory.

I had Ken O’Connor port a blaster cylinder for me back in 2006. That blaster ripped!
