Re: Tool Box - OEM 88-89 vs 400ex
From what I see guys are saying 99-07 trx400ex work.  One old school trick to keep the cap on is the wrap the threads on the box with a few wraps of electrical tape.  Another trick is to use a piece of bicycle tube on the threads.

Joe

The 400ex toolbox I'm sending Ryan had a loose cap. While looking for a piece of inner tube to slip over the end I saw a bag of used cool head o-rings & found the inner dome o-ring is an almost perfect fit. Buying new hi-temp cool-head o-rings would be an expensive route but you could take the box to an auto parts store & find an o-ring to fit & that will fix the loose cap problem... Or you could just buy a brand new box.lol

Re: Brake Rebuild Kit From my understanding Shindy makes the factory Honda rebuild kits & ships them to Honda so they can put their label on them. I've rebuilt both masters & all 3 calipers on both my R's with Shindy kits & have no complaints plus there much cheaper than the rebranded Honda kits. Also if you have an 86 front MC you can get the Shindy kit for the 87-89 front MC & it will work.

Re: 2020 Oregon Dune Adventure Your R will be ready & waiting for your epic Oregon adventure Joe! I'm hoping I can join you for at least a day trip at one of the other dune area's. Maybe Sandlake if your up to going to Oregon's smallest dunes. Sandlake can get boring kind of fast but its a special place to me because it's the closest dunes to me & the place I spent most of my young life.

Re: Stockish crossbar pad Nice looking R! Seeing it brings back memories of when my friend & his dad broke in their brand new bone stock 88 at my parents place back in 88. I have a vhs tape of it somewhere.

Re: Nice score
In the Seattle metro area, they were all sent back to the distribution hub and cut up. That was cheaper then sending them back to Japan. We got a call and took a truck to pick up motors, we got somewhere in the 30/40 units. Honda wanted to be sure they didn't hit EBay or Craigslist, but that was a long time ago, and I've seen plenty of them for sale, but they have been sitting for 30+ years in somebodies basement.
I had a 98 Honda Accord coupe with leather for training purposes, and when we were done with it, Honda sent a wrecker to pick it up. Honda had signed agreements with wrecking yards that they would go straight to the crusher, with no parts sold off them. This car didn't even have a complete VIN number on it. No titles, no paperwork.

You picked up 30/40 R engines from a Honda distribution hub to keep them from being sold on ebay or craigslist? We're these sitting in the distribution hub for awhile because neither ebay or Craigslist existed back in 1987 when Honda turned all their trikes into nothing more than take out engines

Re: 1988/89 hondaline headlight bubble
I'm not easily offended especially in these times. The two things that do offend me, the two that truly make me feel slighted are:
1) the recent rise in cost of these items. I feel it was started by people who dont care about the sport, now followed by those who know they can get the money for their items.

2) room temperature water. I hate room temperature water.

That's it really.

Number 1 hit the nail right on the head, number 2 however is debatable.lol... Seriously though $180 for a used stock thumb throttle or $250 for a used oem cdi on ebay is ridiculous! Fortunately there are still good people on this forum willing to help without being greedy.

Re: Everyone's profession Got into the electrical construction field a few years after high school & put in 18 years, 13 as an electrician. Quit doing that 6 years ago & started a general contracting business & now do mostly handyman type work & small construction projects. Also do mechanic, fabrication & custom wood working jobs on the side sometimes.
