The Mad Scientist / added coolant capacity
« on: September 30, 2016, 12:41:21 PM »
i have a 363, i race XC and 90% i dont have any cooling problem at all.....but....a couple weeks ago i had a mud race. not fun lol. mi tires were doing more spinning than i was going forward. i ended up quitting the race after two laps because i kept overheating. in not going to blow my engine for a podium finish haha. so it got me thinking....(i do have an expensive radiator. CR iirc) why not ad more capacity to the cooling system? i cant think of any reason that it would be bad. just something that crossed my mind was maybe something like a truck power steering or external oil cooler somewhere along the frame rail towards the back. run the same size radiator hose as the existing hose. providing whatever extra cooling device i used had the same ID as not to restrict flow. maybe try to squeeze another 1/2 to full qt of fluid. just a thought and figured id through it out there for discussion.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Snorkel for big bores
« on: May 11, 2016, 02:50:29 PM »
Anyone come up with a snorkel for big bores? My 363 to be specific. was just curious. Currently I have a 2" shop vac hose kinda cobbeled together in my air box. Works very well but I'm always thinking ahead. I have an idea in my head for another nicer, cleaned design I just figured I'd pick your brains.

not 250r specific.

i have a set of standard shock arms and i want to modify them to run 1" longer shocks. would i take the lower shock mount and move it straight down an inch or do i need to move it out some and down some? do i leave the angle of the shock from stock and move the mount an inch lower along the angle of the stock length shock?

Suspension and Chassis / choosing the right shock springs
« on: April 25, 2016, 09:49:36 AM »
winter before last i sent my shocks to a professional to have them setup for me cause i diddnt know squat about custom suspension and i diddnt have the time to learn it and do it myself. well all last race season (1015) i battled with suspension problems. my rear shock was back to the builder 4 or 4 times and the fronts once. i talked to a lot of the guys i race with about my problems and they all said that i hsould not have the problems. one of the guys i race with helped me revalve my rear shock. it made a little bit of a difference. i kept stopping during my first race of my season yesterday to adjust compression and rebound on my rear shock. it made it a lot better but its not where i think it needs to be. the fronts are a different story. i THINK there sprung too heavy and are too fast on the rebound. so.....at this point i think i have a ok grasp on how the internal valving works and i know what to change to make things slower or faster but what i cant figure out is how do i figure out the correct springs? maul tech has a spring calculator to find out the rate of an unknown spring. i figured id use it to find out the rate of my rear spring so at least i knew where i stand but how do i know what spring i actually need. do i figure that out from figuring race sag? before or after i set ride height? basically im going to just learn all this stuff and do it myself. i cant afford to keep sending my shocks back and fourth a bunch of times lol

Engine and Bottom End / ball hone
« on: April 20, 2016, 01:08:32 PM »
want to get a hone just to deglaze/prep for new rings. im pretty sure a ball hone is what i want. i tried a flex/ spring hone and it kept getting caught on the ports. i was looking at mcmastercarr cause i have other things to order from there anyway. they have a multi purpose, soft materials, and stainless/hard materials one. im guessing i want the one for hard materials. right? what grit? my first thought would be 600.

Suspension and Chassis / aftermarket link
« on: April 12, 2016, 11:52:22 AM »
are there any aftermarket links or links from another quad that would allow me to use a longer shock without doing modifications to my frame? just curious cause i have a really nice axis rear shock on my banshee that im going to part out and i thought it would be nice to use it on my r but its a little longer.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / airbox lid VS outerwear lid
« on: March 30, 2016, 10:47:45 AM »
i ride trails and race XC. i cant decide if i want to stick with a airbox lid and snorkel or go with an outerwear hydrophobic lid. i do hit water and having a lid and the ability to submerge my quad is awesome. it gives me an edge up on a lot of other racers cause i can just blast the water and not worry about it but the setup i currently have is hookey and im revamping my box for this season. how good are the hydrophobic covers? i can watch videos all day long with people puddling water on top of the cloth but how does that translate to the real world? if i blast water and the box goes under water (im keeping the snorkel on it) is it going to keep most of the water out of the box or not? should i just keep a lid and stay safe? this is an aluminum airbox and fabing/welding is no problem for me so really the sky is the limit in that aspect.

Other ATV's / yamaha blaster air box ideas
« on: March 29, 2016, 09:08:09 AM »
my daughter is racing xc with her blaster. currently her engine is getting upgraded so she will have a ton more power and will need a ton more air which the stock air box can not provide. ive been looking around for ideas on air boxes with lids and a snorkel but cant find anything but boxes without lids which i dont want. i want a lid with a snorkel. does any one have any experience or ideas on how to do this? i can weld aluminum and have a bunch of sheet aluminum laying around so making or modifying an air box is not problem.
