Title: My new son's R
Post by: The norm on June 02, 2018, 07:34:15 PM
I recently got custody of my 11 year old son. So I naturally had to buy him a 250r.  I found a 86 R with a few good parts. The best part is that I got it for  $800. I am trying to cobble it together for my upcoming trip July 7th. Wish me luck!

Can't go wrong for 800 bucks!  What's the plan?  And what parts do you need?

Looks like it might have 400ex a-arms on it.

So this R doesn't run at the moment.  I basically bought it for parts. I wasn't aware that the frame was trash,  but now I am lol. The plan moving forward is to slap it together in a hurry so we can ride in early July.  After this summer I will be tearing it apart and making it a decent quad.

Sounds like a plan. If you can keep his attention, the 11 year old will learn a lot, but the attention span is short on most. letting him ride it before the big tear down, may play well in his waiting for it to be done.
I love projects, best of luck

Looks like I need a few parts. Front engine mount plates, head stay, and swinger pivot bolt. I will post my wish list in the wanted section.  Thanks,  Loren

I actually have 2 11 year old boys. One has been riding a 250r for about 9 months and the other is just starting.  They are both 5'3" tall and one is 130lbs and the other is 120lbs. So bigger than most kids their age lol

So for an update... I found a broken case bolt when trying to replace the busted counter balancer bearing holder. It was the longer bolt that passes through the left case half and threads into the right case half.  I tore the engine apart and split the case.  Some meat head had already tried and failed to remove the bolt.  I was able to mill the bolt out, but had to use a helicoil. Hopefully I will have the engine together and running by Sunday.

So I had the boy ride my uncle's ltz400 around and I determined that this boy will kill a 250r. He has no idea how to use a clutch or shift. I'm going to have him ride the ltz400 this first trip and then we'll get him going on the 250r.

Nice work! Especially on the frame. I can't imagine having such an awesome quad at that age. Very cool.

How was the dune trip?

The dune trip was awesome! My son Cooper told me it was the best dune trip we ever had. This was his second trip on his R and he went up every hill except a few nasty hillclimbs. Gavin the new boy was so amazed by the dunes. He didn't even know that much fun could be had. He definitely wants to ride his R next trip which is a R gathering in August

Awesome! Raising the next generation of R enthusiasts haha. I bet they did have a blast. I would like to ride sand sometime myself.

So to get this going again. I am just now getting Gavin's R going for our dunes trip coming up at the end of June. I have it running (kind of). I believe I have some electrical problems to sort. Also I have a problem with the brakes. I bought a nice set of brakes off Ebay and am going to install them over the next few days. Gavin has been helping me as much as I can stand lol

I found the problem! Bad CDI for sure. I verified it with a good cdi off my other son's R. If only I had a spare!

Pretty sure I have an extra cdi off an 87

So after getting a cdi on the R I  got running only to discover that the craigslist bottom end had a horrible knock. I pulled it down and replaced the crank, main bearings and rebuilt the counter balancer(myself....no special jig required). It now runs and rides without issue.
