Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Jetting help with new build
« on: September 15, 2019, 09:56:03 AM »
Hello all,

I was wondering what would be a good starting point for jetting on my build.  I've been trying to contact Eddie at ESR for a couple weeks about a few questions with no luck.  The motor specifics are ESR 330PV pump gas motor, TRX 7 porting, TRX 5 pipe and silencer, 38mm AS short body carb, open air filter with outwear.  My altitude is between 500-1000ft above sea level.  Temps are typically in the 60-80 degree range with humidity in the 60's.

My carb currently has a DGH needle in it with the clip in the 4th groove down from the top.  I've set the air screw to 1 1/2 turns out for a good starting point there.  It currently has a 190 main and 42 pilot, it's what it came with but more jets and pilots have already been ordered.

Also, with fuel......will running 40:1 be ok or should I play it a little safer on a new motor and run 32:1?

Thank you for any input you may be able to provide!

Have a great day,

Tony

Projects / LED HPI ignition install with pics
« on: August 03, 2019, 01:05:20 AM »
Hello folks,

I mentioned in my build thread about running the new LED HPI ignition system and doing a install write-up on it.  The first thing I will say is this is NOT that hard, just take your time, double and triple check your TDC and stay within what Arlen recommends for the timing which is 2.85-3.00 mm BTDC.  One recommendation is to spend the money on the dial indicator set that he sells for doing this install.  Many of us probably already have a dial indicator that measures in inches, the one Arlen sells measures in mm, which is also how he bases his measurements.

The first pic is going to show the base plate that the stator mounts to.  It's a nice simple piece and centers up the stator very nice and snug.  You'll also notice with the base plate that you have numerous mounting holes and they are also slotted to allow timing adjustments should you need/want to play with the timing a bit.  I should note that from talking with Arlen he did a lot of testing with this ignition and found the sweet spot to be right between 2.85-3.00 mm BTDC.  The HPI instructions say between 2-4 mm BTDC.

Here is a pic of the base plate.

Projects / 86' full build
« on: July 19, 2019, 07:11:50 PM »
Hello all,

It is finally time, i.e. I've finally got around to posting some pics and details of my current 86' 250r build.  I got the R about a year ago in excellent original condition, still had the original tires on it.  Even though they were damn near bald and weather checked they still held air.  Initially I was going to spruce her up a little, fluids, chain, the common stuff you do when you get a used atv.  I wanted  to make sure it was ready to ride, with some new tires of course lol.  It didn't want to idle very well at all and I couldn't adjust the cable anymore, it was the original lol.  So I pulled the carb to go through it and put a new cable on.  The carb was a fubar mess lol.  The slide was completely worn out and it had some varnish in it.  So, I rebuilt the carb and moved on to doing all the bearings.  This is where the story takes that turn from get it running good to screw it, lets go all in.  Upon pulling the rear axle I noticed it was bent on both sides 180 degrees out.  How in the hell I didn't feel this on the test ride can only be explained as "I'm riding a 250r!!!! :)"

That was the start of well if the axle gets replaced then I should put on better A-arms.  If I go to better A-arms I'd better upgrade the shocks too........... you know the drill.  So the wallet came out, started cussing at me but I said take it like a man!!!

I got a Pumashine full gusset kit and then had the frame powder coated in Prizmatic Powders very red.  The stock swinger was in fantastic shape so I blasted it and painted it with ceramic gloss black paint.  I went with a Lonestar axle, carrier, hubs front and rear after converting to 89' front spindles, their DC-pro long travel a-arms, and lastly a Lonestar stem and top bearing retainer.  For shocks I chose Elka stage 5 all the way around.  First time with Elka's as my other toys ride on Fox Floats, so I'm interested to see how these do.  I'm using Renthal Fatbars fitted with ODI rogue grips and ASV levers.  New plastics via Maier with a carbon fiber hood, radiator shrouds, rear master cylinder protector and seat cover from CarbonWerx.  Wheels I went with Hyper Tech 1's up front and Tech 3's in the rear.  On to the motor......... I went with an ESR 330 PV cylinder with a Hot Rods crank including trx 7 porting and trx 5 pipe, this will be fed by a Keihn 38 AS short body carb and ESR reeds.  I did the upgrade to the clutch using the pancake bearing for the lifter and also installed a Hinson basket along with a heavy duty clutch kit from ESR as well.

For the ignition I'm gonna probably be one of the few from what I've seen on the forums that is going to run the new LED HPI ignition.  With the price of the CR stuff being so stupid this seems like it is worth a try.  For those who haven't dealt with Arlan........ that guy is a hoot to talk to and takes all the time that is needed to explain something.

So, that's the  build to this point.  I'm currently waiting on a Sonny Fricia billet intake, I have horrible alignment issues with the carb.  I even tried a rad valve to shorten/lower the carb down a bit and it was still horrible.  I'm hoping the pics will load.  Let me know what you think and please feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for looking at my build.

Engine and Bottom End / 1986 radiator hoses
« on: July 01, 2019, 06:14:35 PM »
Hello folks, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some silicone radiator hoses for my 86' trx 250r?  I've been combing the internet and everything comes up 87'-89'.  The OEM part numbers for the 86'-87' models are the same but different from the 88'-89' model years.  Can the 88'-89' hoses be made to work on the 86' model?

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Have a great day!

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Carb, pipe, and intake boot questions
« on: January 20, 2019, 08:31:37 AM »
Hello all,

I have a 86' 250r that is needed some attention.  I purchased it last year in very decent bone stock condition from the second owner........ still had the original tires on it lol.  I'm currently going through it making sure everything is good to go for this coming summer.  I pulled the carb to give it a good cleaning and just see were things were at on the inside.  What I found was a 30+ year old carb with some seriously worn out parts, i.e. slide and pretty much the rest of the internals were just gunked up.  I'm at a point of do I repair/redo the stock carb or use the new PWK 35 I have sitting here already from another quad?  With the exception of the motor having a new stock cylinder and piston, the motor is bone stock.  First question is this....... since I already have a new PWK 35 sitting here will this be a decent carb to put on an otherwise stock motor?  I've read that a lot of folks seem to really like the 38mm air strykers but if the 35 I already have will work well for what I have it seems like the best choice for now.

Next question that goes right in line with using the 35 PWK is will it work with an aftermarket pipe?  Not sure what pipe, that would be the second prong to my questions here.........what would be a good all around pipe for this motor that would work well with the 35 PWK if that is the carb I stick with?  I ride mostly trails and some non-competitive mx track time.  I'm not looking for huge gains, just something that will wake up an otherwise stock motor when it comes to pipe selection.

Next question, if going with the 35 PWK, will it work with the stock intake boot or would I need to get a different size one.  Lastly, what would be a good starting point for jets using the PWK carb?  I know pipe selection will play a factor in this so if you give a pipe recommendation knowing what jet would get me in the ball park would be great.

I apologize for the long post but wanted to provide as much detail as needed.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Tony
