WOW! I get to make the first post, in the first ever thread in the ATC sub forum on the new 250r board! How cool is that!
So, what better way to start things off than by us ATC lovers posting pics of our rides! :)
If you have trikes other than 250r's, what the heck, post them up too.
I'll start...
-
Here is my Big Red. She's all original except for the rear rubber....

Lotta great looking trikes on here! Here's my old air cooled 83. I bought a couple of parts bike and spent the next 6 months or so making one good one out of em.

Those are sweet Black Sheep. You have got alot of time into those bikes and it shows. Beautiful. There is nothing wrong with a four stroke IMO. My built 450r runs great.

LOL! I'm sorry brother..
You don't want those old scuffed up, old school rough finish Low-pros.. They really are 20 foot plastics. They don't really look that good close up. Edges aren't cut real uniform and even, finish is rough/dull.... I bought those back in 1995. They just weren't making the nice shiny plastic then like they are today.
I would like to get some OEM profiles on it at some point.. But I'm struggling with the idea of parting with them. I kinda like em.
Oh and Kasey: The stuff you build never ceases to awe and inspire! Never seen the Cat trike before... EPIC!
Good to see more 3ww guys making their way here! :smile-new:

-
I haven't been following did you get the 500 up and going?
yep its up and running! Took it to Trikefest in june as the first real 'ride' and it didnt do too bad over all. Doing alot of work on it this week; suspension101 has my rear shock and is doing a full rebuild/revalve/new spring on it. installed a new right radiator because a rock busted a hole in the old one. Made a new set of top motor mounts from 5052 3/16" aluminum plate because the motor ripped the old mounts in half lol. Installed an x-33 durablue axle and am ordering a 38mm cast smart carb this coming friday for it. Headed to the badlands for a ride weekend after this one, should be a good shake down to see what breaks. thanks for askin!
Tattool: if that was a question for me, i am running a 21" front on a 10" wheel
-
I run this tire on my ATC with the 3x3 off set 10 inch rim I really like it over the stock front tire.http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/81/165/723/-/26017/ITP-QuadCross-XC-ATV-Tire?term=itp 22-7x10 6ply.
How much was your smart carb? How come you only using a 38mm I got a 39mm on my 330.
-
This is great, its like 3W.org and 3WW all in one. Well, you guys know my trikes but I will post them anyway :)

smartcarb was around 430$ with tax and shipping. that is for the pre-order on the cast version, not the billet one already out. I wont get mine until prob mid september if they release as scheduled mid august. Also, I went with the 38mm because that was the only one they offer for the cast version. no way i can stomach spending 800$+ on the billet one. even though its gorgeous lol. I have a 39pwk on my 500 now, but APT confirmed the 38mm would be just fine on this machine! Plus theres like 1 or 2 guys on the cr500 boards running the 38 billet carbs on their cr500 motors and have had great success!
-
Didn't the CR500 come with a 38mm carb from the factory anyway?? Not saying bigger isn't better in this case, especially for drag running...... But the 38 should be adequate I would think....
-
If you read up on the smart carb, they Even claim it atomizes the fuel more efficiently which in part leads to better hp gains. They claim like 8-10% hp gains. Compared to the old pj 38mm carbs these 500cc bikes came with, there should be significant gains :D
But ya 38mn is what they rolled out with. I'm so excited to get this
-
Almost finished.

My TPC
(http://i399.photobucket.com/albums/pp71/fire1man2008/tpc%202/DSC01816.jpg)
I should have my new 250r ATC ready for pictures in a month or two. Still need a few items.
DAM!!!!!! Thing is so sick!

The new transformations are just beautiful. The old frames with new suspension and motor technology make me wish it was 1985 with 2013 technology.

Not sure if you are refering to the TPC or something else, but TPC's are all new, frame included. No old school parts involved

That 450x and the Patriot trike are my favorites! Nice work you do Bill... :)

Sorry, what frames are you using?
-
Sorry, what frames are you using?
My own design.
-
its not rocket science and if you search around you will find that they take a swazall to the trz frame and cut it in half,, then add to whats left to built the front half . there has always been talk of a complete cromoly frame but as I have not seen anything yet to show there has been one built . big news like that usually is all over when it happens.
-
Not to side track but if I repair my trike frame like welding and gussetting, should I get it magna fluxed to inspect it for stress? Sorry for the off the wall ?

LOL, How many are out there now :confused-new: I didn't realize you have been to my shop and seen how we do it. :disillusionment: I guess that's why you're using a bike frame :p

It's not a bad idea. If you can, on a 27 year old frame, I sure would.
-
like I said its not rocket science,, over the years you have posted several picts of you and others cutting up trx450r's with a sawzall,, its also common knowledge you use the rear half of the trx450r frame with the suspension and subframe points all intact ,,, there are a lot of very smart people here who pretty well know what it takes to build a project like this, and most probably already know its your design added to a section of frame which is a production Honda part, as for the complete cromoly frame built by you,,,,,, like I said if it was a reality.. it would be common knowledge too,,,
-

Thanks for the reply. I have access to a portable magnaflux is why I asked. My next build will see a modified frame.

What's the matter, things slowed down at 3W.O since I am no longer there so your trying to pick a fight here :sign0108: Your common knowledge is based on internet forum information. Why do you care how I build them?
Puma thought I used old 85/86 frames so I corrected him.
Do I use part of the TRX frame on most builds, yea sure do. No point in rebuilding the same thing. A little FYI for you. Most frame builders outsource parts to. http://www.jjandaracing.com/contents/en-us/d15.html Shock mounts, engine tabs, steering tubes, Swingram builders out source the piviot area and axle carrier. Nick Nicholson built custom ATC frames and Honda supplied all the gussets, neck, and all stamped parts. All he did was bend and weld the round tube. So, what's your point.
Chromoly frame. You have no idea whats in my shop. I have one sitting on the floor right now. Someday I want to replace my original "half-breed" frame. Problem is, all the original frame does is keep winning ;) 6 years ruuning and no problems yet. It's kinda a testiment and how good they are :P Truth is though Chromoly is not really the best material for a ATV frame. It's is heavier, and to hard. Whereas DOM will flex and not crack like Chromoly does. But, I leave that option up to the buyer. They get what they ask for. I have had only two people order chromoly and those builds are being done at the owners place/time. I have no control over when they finish their trikes. When I get pics, sometimes I post them. You really want to see a chromoly frame...buy one :)
Of course I could have taken the easy way out and used a bike frame...but those things never handle well. I stick to my race proven ways though :biggrin-new:
p.s. the sawsall...that was all for shock value, nothing like seeing a brand new quad chopped in half :cower:
-
nobody is trying to pick a fight here,, and look a detailed answer for a few that like to know things,, thanks for a real answer with a little detail,,
-
Well the thread is about showing trikes, not getting into detail about TPC's. I wasn't trying to avoid anything, just respecting the original intent.
Now let see more trike pics.

LOL on the white motor.
Looks great now but we will see after it has been run for a while. I have a 85 cr 250r jug that will end up on this one.
Just wanted to do something out of the ordinary.

Thanks Tim! The tank has been coated, not painted yet. May get this through this year.???

Thanks to all for the compliments. I just tinker, there are some MAJOR builders on here as well as the other forums i am not one of them.

Not the greatest pictures but the only ones i could find. My 85 350x that I got back in 1987. This was taken just before the last ride it ever went on. It hasn't ran since 05-06. Poor girl was already pretty tired & I ran the crap out of it in the snow & it's been in deep hibernation ever since. Someday I'd like to get her going again.

Knowing Bill, my money says it's a decently worked 450. Dirtbike head and cam, but otherwise pretty close to stock.

.30 flat couple years ago. Haven't been out much since, but hopefully soon. Few others have caught up or passed by since, can't be letting that happen. :)

Yah.... a 5.30 ain't all that impressive.. Of course, you take that 1 second reaction time off and you got a pretty good time..

I always subtract the reaction time, and run 200' so i'm pretty competitive. :welcoming:

-
My pride and joy; ATC500R!!!! BEHOLD THE BEAST THAT HONDA WAS TOO SCARED TO MASS PRODUCE!!!!
Nice conversion for sure but, The 500R Honda built was all new. Nothing from the 250R was used on it. Is that A Billy G. converted frame? That upside down brake pedel would scare me though. Hate to have it dig into the ground if and when you bottom out.
-
Chustle thanks it's one of nos350x's pipes. It's obnoxious lol I love sectional pipes though
And thanks Bill I am aware they used different parts I have seen all the arguments about the 500. Ya it's one of Billy's frames, and I haven't had clearance issues with the brake lever yet. I don't ride in extremely technical terrain with this bike it's more for trail riding and leisure enjoyment. If the brake lever is at risk of catching than I have other valuable parts that are more at risk lol
-
What would hit before that pedal? It's lower then the frame. Did you have to do that to clear the side cover? I only ask because I have never seen it done that way before. Don;t get me wrong I'm not bashing, I like to look and stance of it. Something about it looks better then most 250R/500 conversions i've seen
-
Thanks man! It's actually pretty common; mr350x, jeffatc250r, wild200x and a few others did it that way so the kickers get a full rotation out of the motor. Otherwise the kicker hits the brake lever in it's stock location and makes it a royal PITA to get these big motors to fire. Things that would touch the ground if the terrain was bad enough would include my overpriced inverts and related brake hardware lol. That and my 450r swinger. I hate riding rocky or rutted out terrain, just hard on the bike and not so much fun for me so I avoid parks with that type of riding
I gotta say I love your TPC's man! Especially yours posted above, just awesome bikes. My buddy Kevin Dazey here in St Louis is in line for you to make up a kit for him this year. I think he's going to route of just buying a complete frame and kit and swapping everything over. Anyways, I really want to make room for a TPC conversion in my garage sometime soon!
-
I have a fair amount of work left to do on the 500 though. Fork guards need bolted on, I'm swapping to a polished 10" front wheel and correct direction aimed tire lol, and a few odds and ends. I just finished building the bike in the last month and my first real ride out was two weekends ago. I love the rekluse clutch system and low end grunt this thing packs! And I like the stance on it too, so many people run the cr500 frames and ATC front end and it has just god awful rake to it. I think I have it just about right, and it handles great! I didn't want to go with 18" tires but the tranny is geared so tall I had to slow it down somehow. It's already got 42 rear tooth sprocket and a 13 torch up front (smallest front that will fit w the swinger combo). It rides better than I imagined!
-
Ok, I know back in the day when these 500's were done the trick was to use a YZ 250 kick lever for that very reason. Don't ask me what year though because I can't remember...lol...yep Kevin is on the list...I'm right there with you on the bike frames...never have liked using them for conversions.
-
JasonB how long are your front forks? I need to have mine rebuilt/shortened. I like the stance of that 500.
-
Ya I ended up doing what a lot of the other guys run these days; blaster kicker that's sitting on a cr500 knuckle that was mill'd down to fit . I have a decompression release head that allows me to kick this thing over in flip flops. The blaster kicker is short which allows you to kick it over with the fenders in place, that is a big deal to me. Pulling fenders everytime the bike needs started is ridiculous
Goovrit I can measure them but I believe it's just about 3" that gets cut out to get the best ride height. Hall does it for 275 a set which includes a full rebuild. There's a new 'company' out there that will be offering up inverts in the next month or two that has a cheaper rate for shortenning forks and more economical triple trees too. My 350x will have one of their sets
-
Ya I ended up doing what a lot of the other guys run these days; blaster kicker that's sitting on a cr500 knuckle that was mill'd down to fit . I have a decompression release head that allows me to kick this thing over in flip flops. The blaster kicker is short which allows you to kick it over with the fenders in place, that is a big deal to me. Pulling fenders everytime the bike needs started is ridiculous
When I release the TPC 500 that problem will be eliminated completely!!!

Would that have anything to do with the triples Louis made ;)
-
That's awesome, get on to releasing those 500's already! I will take one for damn sure, I am weary about jumping this Frame at all.
You know the guy making triples and it sure as shit ain't Lou hahhHAhh
-
LOL, I asked that because Lou recently posted a pic of 10 sets of triples he did. But, now you got me wondering? Could be a few people, guess I'll have to wait and see...lol....hmmm...maybe the initials TT mean something.
It's so cool to see so many people making things again. I said it years ago on 3ww when people were asking if the manufactures/aftermarket would ever start making trikes and parts again and if would racing ever get going again. I told them the only way it would happen is if we do it ourselves...I was laughed at...that would be fun thread to bump...lol
I'm pretty sure people will be blown away buy what I have in store for the 500.
-
I am completely serious about buying one of your 500's when they come out, i was looking at doing the honda cr500 frame for safety reasons (they are probably built better than Billy's conversion frame since those utilize a 30 year old frame, nothing against Billy's fab skills just don't full trust these old frames) since i want to jump with this bike. Correct rake triples and a 450r rear end with proper adjustment has been done before with the stock steel cr500 frames and looks great. I think a proper built frame from someone doing it like your doing your TPC's would be awesome. I would absolutely LOVE to have a 500R that i didn't feel like i personally cobbled it together. There are parts to my bike that I'm just not happy with, like the brake lever and the pipe for instance. I hate running a pipe that had to be frankenstiened to fit my conversion frame, it just not pretty but its functional. I hope you have plans to utilize the stock routing for the cr500's pipes or at least offer some type of pipe with yours that fits your set up. Ya interested would be putting it lightly, i can't wait to see what you have to offer for the 500 crowd! Between initial investment, motor and motor work, sourcing good quality 250r parts, and mods like the Rekluse i am over 10K invested in this bike. I could have done one of your entry level TPC's for less hahahah
And the triples will be out soon, they look better than most other people's triples i have seen out there. Its a 'secret' who's doing them and they won't release info on them to the public until the testing is done on them and there are good pictures taken to show the masses
-
Just like the 450's the 500's will have the same thought process put into them, Function, Reliability, And Serviceability. I may take longer than others to build my TPC's but, when there done, they are done. Using standard CR 500R pipes will be an option but, we will also have custom pipes made. All parts will be modern and readily available off the shelf just like our 450's. They will also use something never offered before on a Trike just like our new 450's will soon have.
-
You have my complete and undivided attention lol.

A couple of my newly acquired 85R.... I picked it up about 3mos ago, literally have about 45mins seat time on it, and immediately tore it down for it's 29yr inspection... ready to ride now.

She made her maiden voyage today, to Prairie City in Sac, CA... It's all dirty now.... one fork shock is leaking, and my upper chain roller, was kinda busted up... now its gone.
A Good Day!

badandy it looks great!

Thanks yo... It's a rider bike, I'll get to cosmetics later... but had a good ride today. Did a full throttle plug chop, after the exhaust and reed change, also has a uni filter, don't know if that matters much...
I was rich at idle and only got about 4 sec's at W/O before i killed it. It was a new plug and looked light to me. I played with the needle, raised two notches but seemed to open a hole between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle. I haven't tuned a two stroke before so this will include a learning curve....

My son and I have been working on this 1986 Honda ATC 250r project over the last year and it is almost complete. The carb is at Duncan Racing since it was and Honda CR 250 motorcycle carb that was set up back in the 86 to run on an ATV motor. The motor is from a Honda 1988 TRX250r which gives it a closer ratio gear box and the longrod motor with a better cylinder. We also installed a TRX 1988 aluminum swingarm which is -1 shorter than stock. This is the length The Honda ATC Team ran for their motocross set up.I did not have a Paul Turner or Calfab laying around so we had the mounts built to run the motor and swingarm. It has the HRC short course tank set up but we had to use DC aftermarket shrouds. The pipe is a handmade cone pipe from Kenny Roberts and the silence is a rare Paul Turner made back in the mid 80's. The rear shock was re-valved and sprung by Race Tech but we are going to have Rob Selvy rebuild an stock shock which performs unbelievable. I also have an Ohlins which we might put back on. The front tire is a Hondaline Racing Pro Comp that is 22x7x10 on a special 10inch rim made for the ATC's. The rear tires are Ohtsu 903 H-Trak's with a 4inch wider Durablue axle. We also used an 1988 CDI box that plugged directly into the 1986 wiring harness to get a better timing curve for the motor. This was not a restoration but a great rider. it should be up and riding next week.

After sitting for a few years I finally got my R together this past winter. It's not a period correct build but it does have a few rare components from back in the 80s. I still have a few changes I want to make, e.g., suspension mods, extended axle, but here she is so far.
Flat track tank
+2 Westcoast swingarm
Paul Turner Hi rev pipe
PWR radiators
Pro Design Cool Head (15cc dome)
Mikuni 38mm TMX carb
Hinson clutch basket
IMS foot pegs
Aluminum airbox
Shamrock rims

How do you like that carb? What is the jetting on it?
-
I love the TMX. I bought another one just recently. It gives it a very crisp throttle response and just feels good from bottom to top end. It's a lot narrower than a Keihin, some 76 mm in width, so if you have a small space it fits. The jets are easy to change. The float bowl drain plug at the bottom actually holds the bowl in place (plus one little side screw), so you don't have to unscrew 4 phillips like on the Keihin. It also only has 3 hoses coming off it, unlike the Keihin AS that looks like a bundle of hoses. Mine came nearly perfectly jetted, although I did drop the pilot from 20 to 17.5. I kept the main at 370. For years I stayed away from Mikuni because I heard they were temperamental when it came to jetting, but that's not been my experience.
I got it from Niche Cycle Supply. Good prices and fast shipping. http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/mikuni/carburetors/tm38-27-mikuni-tmx38-flatslide-carburetor-44mm-by-mikuni.html
I don't know if the IMS pegs comment above was directed to me. Anyway, the 86-87 TRX pegs work with the ATC.
-
I run the cr tmx. I haven't tried one of the but is sounds like it is the same. After I put it on and ran it, I sold my Keihins.

Here is my '85 ATC250R. Have had it since June '93. Had Selvy build a pipe and tune it the summer of '94 and didn't mess with it until last year. Have since added a few upgrades...Flexx Bars, BVC folding pegs, fresh top end with dune port, o-ringed head, VF3, CR ignition, Fourwerx seat cover, etc. More to come.

Does the Power Apt update on cast smart carbs signify a revolutionary breakthrough in fuel efficiency and performance for off-road vehicles, or is it just another overhyped marketing ploy?

My experience has been....another grandchild of the Lakewood injector, Lectron, Blue Magnum, EI Carb and now the Smart Carb all from the same gene pool.
