Lounge / New to me lathe
« on: August 23, 2020, 06:24:11 PM »
i have been wanting a lathe and mill for sometime. in my neck of the woods they are hard to find. So on my last trip out to the mainland (Vegas) i had two options. Buy a harbor freight lathe or rent an exotic car.

So i didnt but a harbor freight lathe lol

I have been asking this guy that owns a electric motor repair shop to sell me a lathe for 2 years. He has a couple in his shop and comes across them used from time to time. Last week i went to his shop and he tells me, "so you going to buy that lathe from me?" we came up with a price and he tells me to come back in the afternoon to pick it up.

She's an old 9" South Bend. I have yet to find the exact year. Older than me for sure. The last owner did clean it up pretty good. She's not perfect but she's perfect for the space i have and the duties it shall serve. All manual which is good because id like to learn on a simple machine. Id like to find the original manual and a parts manual as well.

so my question is since many of you have experience with mills and lathes, can you recommend a good online place to source parts? Both OEM and aftermatket. How bout some sites on how to operate this lathe? Im a total nob with this and not afraid to admit that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since im posting pics of my mug his one more along with another old machine i use at work. Miller DialArc HF. I use it mainly for Tig. This machine sat for many years uncovered in a warehouse till i came along and asked if I could try it out. Its a total BEAST!

FAQ's, How-To Guides & Useful Information / CRF front master cylinder
« on: July 29, 2020, 01:02:57 AM »
Since the price of TRX parts are on the rise I find it beneficial to all to find parts that are not only a cost effective replacement but also OEM Honda.

Here I'll be installing a CRF front brake master cylinder.
Any year CRF250/450 can be used.
The body of the cylinder is smaller than the stock TRX and will clean up the handle bars nicely. These are easily found used in great condition on eBay or group pages on Facebook.

Let's get to it.

Top is a CRF. Bottom is TRX. Notice the TRX has a much thicker mount for the handle bars. This thicker mount is so the master will clear the throttle.

Here is a picture of the CRF master on the bars. Notice the master is touching the throttle. Also the brake line is touching the bars. Clearance needs to be made to properly mount the CFR master.
But how you ask? The solution is simple.
You'll need a spacer like this:

You can purchase this spacer at one of two places.
(Mike's custom machine link)
                    or
(eBay dick head)https://www.ebay.com/itm/274438804438
I personally would purchase from Mike. His customer service is great and he is so easy to work with. My spacer came from Mike. I'll give him a good plug at the end of this post.

Notice now with the spacer installed the CRF master (bottom) now has the same mounting distance as the TRX master (top).
And here she is all installed. Clearance is good next to the throttle and the brake line clears as well.

Suspension and Chassis / Lower frame rail repair
« on: February 26, 2020, 03:06:27 AM »
This particular area of the frame sure takes a beating. It is the lowest part of the frame so it takes licks from whatever we plow over. Also being that it is the lowest moisture settles here and slowly rots the metal from the inside out. The lower motor mounts are also welded to these rails so any vibration your motor has gets transferred here. Lastly the OEM metal is thin! Check the pics

Cut out what needed to go. The stock frame rails are metric and actually rectangular not square. I don't recall the exact size off the top of my head. The closest i can get to the OEM size is 3/4" square. It is close enough that i would confidently say most people would never know a repair was made. I chose to use 1/8" wall. I didn't clean off the burrs in these pictures but you can clearly see the wall thickness difference.

New metal. Checking for fit.

My tables are not exactly flat so I put scrap down and clamp everything to the frame to keep it square. Something i found interesting was that the two lower frame rails are not symmetrical! I found this out by comparing the lengths I cut out. They were not the same length. Looking at the frame i also noticed the old welding marks differ from left to right. I made my new frame rails symmetrical. The motor does not sit dead center in the frame. It is actually offset. I never really gave it much thought before. Front motor mounts have bends in the something like this //. It all makes sense if you look closely. Motor is off set so everything else follows suit.

I use a set of dummy cases as a jig so everything lines up correctly. Head mount, swing arm, 86 rear mount since this is a 86 frame, new lower motor mounts, front motor mounts, i even use a head gasket and head torqued down. While all of this is installed I, tack everything in place and check fit once again.

All tacked up.

And that's a wrap folks.

Wanted / WTB fuked up bent stock axle
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:01:56 PM »
I really only need the from the sprocket to the disc. I have a disc and a sprocket so those parts are not needed either. I have a idea in mind and I'd like to use this for mock up. So if you have a fuked up axle and don't mind chopping off the ends please lmk. Cheaper the better

Projects / Rebuilt in Hawaii (2012)
« on: July 08, 2017, 11:27:22 PM »
I rebuilt this R in 2012 or so. Just moving this over here for others to read. ill add in the pictures as time permits.

Aloha! here goes my rebuild. i know we are all picture whores so i took a lot of them. not quite pau yet but enjoy
the original builder of this 250R was dirtycj5. he is also a member here but lives on a different island then I (Big Island) it was posted on CL for some time.

it was sold to some guy locally on the Big Island. it was then posted FS on CL again by the new owner whom i purchased it from. i had it shipped over from the Big Island to Oahu. it was a bit beat up. Neglected to say the least and definitely not as clean and pretty as the above picture. i took care of what needed attention and took her for a few rides before she needed major help.

after a few MX events my frame was toast and a BIG band aid would not fix anything. at least i got to dust a few 450's first
Before the tear down:
