I have some older laeger +2 +1 a arms that need ball joints. Standard travel. Thinking about just buying new arms instead of replacing the ball joints. In everyones opinion, what would be the best brand to go with as far as handling? If long travel is that much better than that is what I would buy. Woods and dune riding. I have never been on a race track in my life and don't plan on it now. Price is not a major consideration but I don't want to overbuy if I don't have to.

I'd go with JD Performance long shock a arms.

Joe
That's encouraging because its what I just ordered for mine.
-
If you're willing to spend the money, then get the long travel. Don't forget you'll have to get new shocks or have your current ones lengthened.
But if you're not going to see a race track, and are just woods and dune riding then I would stick with the stock travel. Unless you've got money to blow, of course.
JD Performance can help you get the proper ball joints for your Laeger a-arms, or I'm sure somebody on this site has the proper part numbers The owner of JD, Dave, used to do most of the welding and fabrication for Laegers.
I bought +2 long-travel JD arms last year and I love them. They're really solid units. I was impressed

I am just looking for the best possible handling and ride for a stock frame quad. My other quad is a laeger narrow +4 t-pin so I want to try to get as close to that as possible with a stock frame.
-
Walsh a option then at $1500?
-
Well call up Jed @ Roll Design. Sounds like you need a +3 Roll front-end lol
-
I have considered a roll front end but +3 would be too wide.

says it only fits a LOBO, but is that accurate?

I don’t have a roll lobo chassis for those arms

They can make you any length from +1 to +4. You could also call up JD Performance. I have a set of their arms and am impressed with their quality. The guy who runs JD used to do all the welding and fabrication for Laeger

Yes there are some Roll a-arms specifically designed for the LOBO frame

viewing JD's sit i came across these:

great deal.

I have jd arms on my red 88. I'm going to get a set for the bof
-
JD is a great value. If you're going +2/+1 with 3:2 offset, then +3 with 4:1 offset wheels puts you at the same width.
-
For my woods bike i run JD MGC LT +2 Arms with 4:1 Rims. Darting trees is pretty easy.
-
I just use stock wheels and the width is just fine right now. Now does lets say a set of JD long travel arms make the bike handle differently than a different brand of long travel arms like Roll Design or Walsh of the same width? Or is most of it in the durability?

are you using 250R spindles?
Joe

Yes
-
So your options are new Walsh (not sure how long you'll wait to get them made). Roll..expensive but nice. JD...best bang for the buck. I say get the JD and then with the money saved to you get even better shocks. I think all would have to handle the same due to using 250R spindles.
Joe

The new Roll stuff all uses 06+ 450r spindles, per Jed @ Roll. The JD arms use 88-89 250r spindles. Walsh I don't know and it doesn't say it on their website

Handling is a subjective opinion. What could handle perfectly for one person could suck for another. Some people like the twitchy, light feeling of a ProTrax front-end. Some like the solid, planted feel of the Roll. I myself would go for the Roll.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the kingpin setup on the Roll front ends. I like the sealed FRAP ball joints like on my JD arms. If I remember correctly, the kingpins from Roll are like $50/piece x 4. That on top of the spherical bearings for the lower arms and the heim joints on the top makes for one really expensive rebuild. Which setup lasts longer? I can't say. The Roll stuff is used by a ton of desert racers and is virtually indestructible, so it's proven. The Roll arms arms are beefy as hell.
I was initially concerned about the toughness of the JD arms I purchased. After all, they were almost half the price of new Roll arms. But I was seriously impressed when I got them. They're some really solid units
-
the main difference between the two are the pro-trax has the best ackermann steering geometry.
this is the issue douglas will be dealing with because of his choice in using 450r spindles.
-
That is good to know about the JD arms because I don't have any 88 or 89 spindles around. And I figured the roll arms would use 400ex or 450r spindles. I really love my pro trax but that motor in that quad is way too wild for the woods. I would buy another one if they were still made and parts were readily available. But my laeger just does not turn in the snow. It pushes the front end. Not sure if it is just the way this wide of a machine is or not.
-
I've got a set of +2 +1 on order from JD. Looking forward to getting them. My only complaint is, yesterday was 5 weeks since i ordered them and was told by Debbie, "there was a problem doing candy blue powered so we are doing them again." So i'm guessing another couple of weeks now.

ISF racing has a nice set of +2+1 arms and a swinger for sale - black powder. Very good price. Basically Laeger clones but built bu5 a sick fabricator.
