Wanted / Looking for 'bad' OEM stator
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:49:07 AM »
I'm looking for a bad OEM stator that was determined to be the source of ignition failure. The only caveat is the lighting coil and pulse generator must be within resistance specs and there is no physical damage to the stator. Thanks

I just purchased a Roll No-Link swingarm and it has an extra set of skidplate mounts in between the front and rear. It came with a standard aluminum skid but it has heavy wear from the sprocket/chain and would not survive the type of rocks I race through. I am wondering if one of the heavy duty stainless ones from a 450R would work. I am OK with drilling or bending the skid plate to get it to work. Can someone that has a 450R swingarm measure the width and length spacing between the 4 rear skidplate mounting holes? This will tell me if the 450R 'half' skid has enough material to work on the Roll swinger. Here is a picture of the Roll swinger mounts and skidplates I'd like to use (Teixeira or ARSFX). Thanks

Engine and Bottom End / Bottom ring broke into 5 pieces, thoughts?
« on: March 16, 2014, 01:43:15 PM »
I tore down the 85 yesterday for a refresh before this season and was surprised to find the bottom piston ring broken into 5 pieces, fully in the correct place. The engine ran fine and compression was ok at 225 psi. The top end has about 50 hours on it since being rebuilt by the previous owner. I wonder what could have caused this? Bad bore job, poor chamfering on the bottom of the ports? I can remember last year before a race hearing a mysterious 'rattle' from the engine. Turns out it was probably this ring rattling in place, may have already been broken then. The sleeve has some wearing above and below the ports where the ring was broken so it will probably take a few overbores to clean up. I'm looking to see if anyone has seen this before or has an explanation of cause so it doesn't happen again. Thanks

The Mad Scientist / ATC250R CCP Puck Style Steering Stabilizer
« on: January 31, 2014, 10:23:04 PM »
I just got done adding this to my 85 R, it should help keep the front end stable pounding through the rocks while racing! I made the tabs out of steel and tapped the bosses on the lower triple clamp. The mount on the frame has been modified from the steering stem clamp.

Hey everybody I'm looking for some suspension advice for my 85 ATC250R with 86 rear components (shock, swingarm, linkage). I had the shock re-sprung locally for my weight but didn't have the valving touched and I was never really impressed with its performance. I race the trike a couple times a year on a very rocky, wooded XC track. I was thinking of going to a 450R rear setup, but started adding up components and the cost was around 3K the way I wanted to do it so I figured I'd see about giving the stock shock and linkage one last chance and ship it out to someone that can really make it work for me. The shock has leaked it's oil out again, (and so has the Elka on my TRX, why do they always lose their oil in the winter? lol) so I figured it's a good time to ship it out.

What can be done to really make these stock shocks perform?
I personally think it could use around an inch more of down travel, can the shock be lengthened?
Can a tender spring be added on top of the main spring to make a dual rate setup?
Internal valving changes, Gold valve kit, etc?

And finally who would be the best to send it off to? The first that popped into my head would be MaulTech or GT Thunder but if there are any other good ones let me know!

Thanks!

Engine and Bottom End / Aluminum Pro-X cylinder overboring
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:30:54 AM »
Here is a question I had but didn't want to ask on .net because of you know who. I have a Pro-X 260PV cylinder 68mm bore, all aluminum, nikasil plated. Could this be stripped and bored to 72mm then replated? There is plenty of material between the current edge of the bore and the inner o-ring gland. I heard these cylinders and the 310 were from the same casting so that got me thinking about this. I know the PV blade and dome would need to be modified for the bigger piston. There really is no cc limit in the current racing series by me anymore whether xc or mx so I figure why stay with a little 260 when all the four strokes are 450+ cc.
