Projects / New 81 atc project

A couple days ago I picked up a couple 81 atc250r's on marketplace. They came in boxes, both motors disassembled. Just the way I like em😂. One 81 motor and the others a 84, there's not enough for 2 complete whole bikes but close. And I've built a few really nice bikes before but I'm going full show bike on this one just cause I can. Figured I'd post on here just to see what yall think of it. The first two pictures of how I got it and the third is a much up I have of the powder coating I've done on the 84 motor. I'll be assembling it tomorrow.

Engine and Bottom End / Detonating pretty bad

My bike was running fine all day and would wheelie whenever i wanted then we got out to the bigger hills my friends banshee was having problems so we headed back and mine started to act a little funny I thought I lt was getting hot cause its a 350 ceo with a stock radiator and new paddles thought that was the problem. Got back, worked on my friends banshee then I thought I'd check my plug and it was a little loose. I didnt think much of it just cleaned it off and put it back in and tight. When it was out it looked perfect. Up to here it had been running fine all day just a little funky the last like 10 minutes but once I tightened the plug it did not want to start and when it did it sounded horrible and when I out it into gear it either died immediately or didn't have enough power to move itself. So could it have been something to do with the plug cause thats all that changed. I thought it was my reeds cracked again but they look fine (I pulled them off) when I get home I can check my timing and I have a extra cdi and coil I can try but I dont k ow why that would have gone out. My carb was leaking out the overflow only when it wasn't running but before it started I haven't touched that

I let my raw LED pipe rust pretty bad and I'm shining my bike up for this spring and wanted to give it new life. I'm powder coating my silencer black and red ill post pics when I'm done but I have 2 somewhat unfinished pipes that I made at LED and they are both rusted so I'm experimenting on them first and I used 000 steel wool and a red Scoth Brite pad and wd40 on one pipe and haven't touched the other the steel wool did ok it didnt take off as much rust as id like and the Scott Brite pad took off too much and took off the coloring of the pipe. Wich the coloring will comeback but it just won't look right. Another option is that I could just hit the whole thing with scotch Brite and use a oxy acetylene torch and put it back, I could do that but I'd prefer not to if any has any ideas

Wanted / ISO Skat-Trak Haulers and maybe a swingarm

I've put this off as long as I can, been rocking the 8 paddle haulers off of my old 400ex years ago that have zero life left but never really cared cause they worked. But now I'm getting beat up hills cause I'm spinning so much so time to change. Dont really know what paddles to go with I know either 9 or 10 paddle haulers dont know what size so suggestions on that would be great and if you got a pair you want to sell great im in the Portland Oregon area if nobody does im still on face book market place all the time ill find something. And I've still got a stock swingarm so if you've got a cheap +4 or something, I dont care brand but if I can't find one I'll just extend my stock one. For a motor I've got a 350 ceo dune ported by arlen and a 350g pipe nothing crazy just need more grip for the hills.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / 110 after a couple months

I'm sure this is a dumb question but I just drained my gas tank and whats left of the gas is no longer purple or smell right, it is all brown and when it sits for more than a minute ish what I'm assuming is the oil all separates to the bottom and smells like a rotting mouse or something dead. This was unleaded vp110 and dumonde tech 111 the exact same tank that I ran in August at the winchester meet I forgot who I got it from down at winchester but it was out of the barrel not a 5 galloner. I take it that its just old or mabey the cold its probably been getting down to freezing in the shop where it is and its not a big deal its the only 110 I've got right now and only like 2 cups of it so its not like 20 gallons ruined just wanna know what might have made this happen

Engine and Bottom End / Blows coolant hose off

When I first rode my 250r with the 350 kit I was at sandlake and I had gotten it pretty hot admittedly I don't have a in line temp guage I'm working on getting one but it was hot and we stopped for a break and about a minute after I shut it off it blew a radiator hose off the clutch cover it was the one connected to the cool side of the radiator. I didn't know what to think about it I just put water back in it and tightened it back down and off I went but this weekend at Florence it happened again after getting it hot it blew it off again so same thing I put water back in it and tightened it again then it happens one last time in a hole shot I got off my bike to help get someone else's bike started and it popped the hose off again. It only is draining what is in that hose then nothing else comes out but when I put more water in it I make sure to burp it and make sure I have enough in it and I can see water circulating and hot water coming in so my leading theory is the overflow line is clogged some where and creating pressure then blowing off the easiest one.

Engine and Bottom End / Revvs then dies at idle

I took my R to Florence this past weekend and was finally able to ride it with the new 350 CEO on it and it ran great other than a radiator issue and twords the end of the trip at idle it would rev it's self up and die I first noticed this going down a tree shot I had the clutch in all the way down. And at the bottom I had to wait for other people to go up so I was idling for about 2 minutes max and all of a sudden it revved up a few RPM and died then all the other times I went down it I was either on the gas more or not idling as long so it didn't happen again till I got home and was warming it up to get water off and it just sounded like it revved a little but then hit the kill switch. But if I'm on the gas at all no problem. I am entirely stumped. I went through the carb and nothing is wrong

Suspension and Chassis / Bottom motor mounts

So i never really payed attention to my bottom frame mounts and never realized they are oblonged quite a bit and i am wondering if i should make new ones and cut the old ones off then tig weld them back on or is this not a big deal im kind of thinking it is.theres a picture of bolth sides. And i dont have a head mount but could that have caused this. I plan on making one.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Jetting question

I'm sure I have started a thread on jetting before and now I cant find it or I'd post in there. Anyhow I am redoing my motor and have no idea where to start on jetting it, I am going to start fat and go down from there I think I fried my old top end by (no offence to anyone) by just starting with what arlen told me then leaving it and I think it was too lean. So where should I start with a 350 dune ported by arlen, his 350g pipe, I will be running a 38mm keihin, race gas head, running 110 mixed 32:1 with dumonde tech l111. I plan on running this the whole time. The only thing I might change is the oil incase I run out and cant get any in time. Thanks for any help. I'm going to trust you guys this time.

I am currently running 110 race gas and it is pretty expensive for me. And I am buying a 350 with a race gas dome it's a esr cylinder and head from arlen. Could I run av gas or av gas mix in it with a esr pump gas dome.

Engine and Bottom End / Gearing question

So I am getting a 350 kit with dune port from arlen this winter mabey even this month he made it sound like he isnt backed up too bad. And right now I have stock gearing and have no idea where to start with it. I know its going to be alot of just playing with it and seeing what I like but what would a good base line be I guess. Just a point to start from .

So I am getting a bit concerned with just how much carbon build up is on top of my piston when I took the top end off when I thought it was detonating I thought the piston was all roughed up from the detonation but I realized that it wiped off and it was just alot of carbon build up. I am currently running klotz-r50 at 40:1 with 110 if I remember right a 175 main jet and I cant remember what pilot I have it written down but I dont have it with me. Should i change jetting or should i change oil. Sorry this the only picture I can find and it's with an endoscope after the 250r meet.

So my cdi went bad today and I talked with arlen already and he gave me some things to try and they didnt help so I'm going to call him tomorrow and see what he thinks but I also kinda just want to know what you guys think of the hpi like is it worth it or do I just get a old oem cdi and have something else blow out in a week and fix that and have the new cdi go out idk. Just for shits and giggles. And it was detonating when I was going up banshee hill and I stopped as soo. As I heard it. And I knew it was detonation so I went back to check things out and there was grey sludge in the cylinder.

So I'm here at winchester bay and I saw a guy acrost the road and his R wasn't reving past mid range and I couldn't really tell what parts were on it but from what I could see (the guy had been lied to about the year of the bike) he had 86 cases and all the ignition was 86 except for the stator coils and the cdi and the coil. It had a spacer plate with a stock 86 cylinder and a esr intake and exhaust. It wouldn't rev out past mid it would bog with his set up and with my bad oem cdi and his oem bad cdi it wouldn't even start but with his 88 box ittle start and idle and has bottom end but mid and top it falls and bogs. I have bis number so I can contact him if we figure anything out.

I picked up this pipe for 15 bucks today and I have no real idea on what it is because he got it In a big pile of stuff and it sat in a silo for years not being used so he gave it to me for cheap it's in really nice condition and hasn't been used for long. Can anyone give me any information on it. I can take pictures later
