Engine and Bottom End / Re: What temp does your big bore run at?
« on: May 14, 2017, 10:39:27 PM »
I just picked up another R with a CT350PV engine and a PWR radiator.  I took it down to Winchester Bay the last few days and it ran well.  Temps were in the 50-65ish range.  When riding the tight twisty trails in 2nd gear I noticed my ESR temp gauge would hit 240 degrees!  When riding higher speeds in the out in the open it would hover around 180-190 usually.  Is this standard for a 350?

What surprises me is my 310 has an AFCO dual pass radiator and most of the time it hovers around 130-150 degrees but I can hit 180 under hard duning.  Both quads have air scoops and neither are running an adjustable timing plate.

I'm considering yanking the pwr out and trying to find another AFCO, but it seems a lot of you guys on here aren't running anything more than a stock rad or pwr, so what's the deal with mine running so hot?

Jetting:

40.5 pwk
55 pilot, 1.5 turns out on air screw
dgh needle, clip middle
195 main

I know it's been a year, but I wanted to follow up.  Took the 350R down to Winchester Bay for the last few days and overheated it.  Again.  Tore the head off to find the inner orange o-ring was missing in several spots as well as the dome o-ring had quit sealing.  Called CT on Thursday at 2 pm and told them to next day air the top end gasket set and another dome, had it delivered to the campground Friday!!!!

Installed all new o-rings and the dome and ran it the rest of the weekend.  Temps were 165-190ish the rest of the weekend.  Problem solved!!

Big thanks to CT for coming through for me and saving my vacation!!!

A girl that likes an old kick start 2 stroke!!  You're kind of rare like a unicorn, I'm not sure it's the quad that's drawing the attention....just sayin!

Welcome to the club.

I just bought the second R in my signature a month ago.  One of the guys at work asked me why I bought a quad made in 86, like I was crazy, especially since I already had one.  I think it made more sense when I explained to him that the 250R is like the old muscle car of the quad world.  Not everyone has one, so they stand out.  I might see one 250R out of 50 quads when I'm out on the dunes.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Jetting suggestions for my 86 R

I think trying a 48 pilot, maybe 1.5" turns out on the air screw, clip on the needle in the middle and a 160 main jet isn't a bad place to start.

Engine and Bottom End / Abnormal bogging?
« on: May 31, 2016, 09:41:54 AM »
I always start with the fuel system first, it's easier to troubleshoot and quicker to eliminate if it's not the problem.  Clean the carb, and verify your float height while your in there.  With the hose of the carb, turn the fuel valve on for a few seconds and verify you're getting full flow from the hose.  Verify your gas cap breather isn't plugged creating a vacuum in the tank when your pulling fuel from the tank riding.  If this all checks out, then I'd start looking at electrical.

I've seen coils start to fail after the quad gets warmed up.  When cool, they'll work, after they warm up they'll start to bog or not spark at all.  I had a stator quit on me last ride, but it worked right up until the quad died like I shut it off.  No bog or anything, it just shut down.  Then I've also seen stators do the same as coils, they work fine when cold, the quad warms up and then the bogging starts.  You let it sit for a while, and then it'll start right back up and then start bogging when it's warm.

The Clymer manual has some resistance checks for ignition components.  When my stator failed, one of the resistance readings was way out of spec.  So it was easy to diagnose.

I used to have a 36 pj on my 310, it worked great in the woods.  I switched it out for a 38mm pwk air stryker when I switched to mostly all dune riding.

Duner / Winchester

There was a fair amount of water out there, but there were still plenty of folks out there sand camping all along the flats.

We were down there last weekend, I already can't wait to go back!  I ran into a handful of other R's as well, that's always cool seeing other R's.  Don't seem to see to many of those, it's all 4 strokes and Banshee's usually.

Have fun!!

Damn Skeans, where's the love?

Looks good Burns, I never knew what a dry break was before!  That is definitely one fast way to fill a quad up!

Another good question what pipe are you running I don't see that listed.

It has an FMF Fatty with a CT Racing Silencer.

Shrouds? Are they sealed to the side of the radiator so all the air gets pushed through the radiator.

The quad is in the toyhauler right now so I can't look, but I believe there was about a 1/4" between the scoops and radiator.

ACEMAN: Try lowering the clip 1 position (Raising the needle) if it lowers the temps and doesn't bog....you're good!

I have a Pro-X350PV that overheats...tried everything....couldn't get the temps down.....tore into the motor and found the coolant passages around the exhaust area are too resticted with casting flash.....I need to grind them open to get more flow.

I did this to my ESR330R that was running 200-210 with a 185main....now I can run a 178main and the temps don't go over 185!!!

If you're still running hot....pull your cylinder head and check the coolant passages....you might have the same issue as me.

More good ideas to check, thank you all!

what coolant do you use?

what is the condition of your impeller?

is you octane rating correct?

I'm not sure what's in it for coolant, other than it looks blue.  I run Engine Ice in the 310, I may have flush the coolant in this one and switch to Engine Ice as well just so I know what's in there.  I also can't speak to the condition of the impeller either, other than when I picked this quad up it had a receipt for a recent engine build.  I was also running straight VP110, so it should be good there.

Also good questions. We are ASSUMING that everything is correct with your engine. This is not meant to upset you or insult you. Sometimes, it's the little things that are missed. John's just making sure the questions are asked.

No worries, you guys have given me a bunch of ideas on where to start looking at least.  It seems the general consensus is leaning towards this thing is in fact running hotter than it should.  Now that I know that, I'll have to spend some time checking out each of the different ideas mentioned in this thread.  Thanks to everyone for the help so far!

No, I just got back from the trip.  I'll have to try something though.  One of the other guys I was riding with mentioned aiming a temp gun at it, but I think I bring enough crap camping, I didn't think I'd need to bring a temp gun too!!

Don't you have a Puma Skeans, what does yours run at?  What kind of radiator?

Welcome to this site!

It looks like you've been busy making parts!  That exhaust flange I got from you on the .net worked just fine during my trip, I just got back.

Thanks again!

Engine and Bottom End / Octane Boosters

Some of the old schoolers might remember Toluene used as an octane booster.  It was used in Formula1 years ago.  There are octane boosters that are real!

http://www.worldofchemicals.com/428/chemistry-articles/toluene-additive-for-racing-fuels-fuel-octane-booster.html

However, I wouldn't run it in my stuff... LOL!  VP for me, the midwest distributor for VP fuels is my neighbor...  =handy!

He probably likes the sound of your quad starting up then=more money for him!!

Those prices don't seem that great too me?  I know this isn't the norm, but our local gas station sells VP110 straight out of the pump for $8.xx/gallon.  That site lists C12 at $11.87/gallon for a 54 gallon drum.
