Title: Burns350R Race Report 8-24-13 ... Monster Holeshots
Post by: Burns363R on August 26, 2013, 07:19:32 AM
Raced last night at the good ol Hawkeye Downs MX series where im currently leading the points with 1 race to go into the season in the Quad A Open class on my trust TRX250R. P.S. I had a good holeshot in the first moto and wheelied the entire thing, came out second. The second moto holeshot i had everyone by 1.5 bike lengths before the first corner and 5 bikes by the second corner... THANK YOU BDT... I got my jetting spot on for the night. Despite the low power air i had... 90 degrees 65% humidity. But the bike performed flawlessly.

The night went as follows..

MOTO1
Pulled a good second place holeshot and chased the leader for several laps trying to make a hole. I was faster than him in a lot of the sections of the track, but couldnt get around him. I ended up making mistakes and loosing ground trying to find new lines. Which in turn caused me to drop back a couple spots. Okay i dropped back to 5th, but honestly i was faster than the guys that was leading at the time and a couple of the guys that beat me. My last couple laps i made several mistakes that i had trouble recovering from. I also chose the slower side of the woops for some dumb reason i still done know why. The being in the wrong gear for the finish line jump is what started my downward spiral for the rest of the race. Not sure what happend.
Also the track was crap in several corners, the mud was very deep and the bike ruts resulting where 8" deep in spots. This limited passing lines as well as a couple of the bigger jumps on the track. I ended up 5th, but i felt that I did better than that in the race. I shouldn't have fallen so far back, but I did and i just need to come back strong in the second moto.

MOTO 2
Well boys, Things went right. Decided to give her hell in the hole shot and that BDT motor stepped up to the plate and showed them 4 pokes we meant business. I put 1.5 bikes on everyone from the outside (hard to tell from the video but i had to travel the farthest in the holeshot) and by the time we got on to the track itself i had put 5 bikes on the entire field. HERE is where shit GOES BAD... coming around on the 2nd lap you will see in the video that i slam on my brakes and 2nd/3rd place rocket by me. This is because there is a flagger standing in the middle of my OPTION LANE. I had no where to go and the other 2 guys took the other option lane. I WAS so pissed that she was there. If i had hit the jump i seriously would have decapitated her with my quad. It was the perfect height. So after trying to recover from that i maintained 3rd place and tried to catch back up to second place. I was able to hold on only slipping slightly with minor mess ups here and there. I did miss a gear a couple times, but made far less mistakes than i have in previous races. I ended up 3rd in the moto and a 3rd overall. I think i could have done better than that if my first moto had gone better, and the stupid flag lady had not messed up my entire race.

All in all it was a great night of racing. The R ran amazingly despite the high heat and humidity. I want to give a big shout out to all my sponsors this year...

I will probably be letting my R sit out next weekend in preparation for my moto shoot for BUTTER!!! Im going to get her all shined up and check her over real well. I have been having troubles cracking the frame and i think it held up last night, but i dont want to risk anything next weekend since i wont have time to fix it between the race and the video shoot. But after Butter, the R will be going back to active duty as the Flag ship of the KB81 racing team.

Thanks all Enjoy.

Good write up Burns. I haven't got to watch the videos yet, but am about to. It seems like you posted an honest account with some critical observations. I know I am usually my biggest critic when it comes to my racing. But I use it to get better as I am sure you do as well. I will offer up any observations I have (if I have any) after checking out the videos.

Kyle:

1st moto: the thing that noticed was that you seemed to be struggling with passing that front guy, not that you weren't exactly faster, but that it was taking so long to get around him. It appeared that the green rider behind you capitalized on a spot when you and the leader were going at it. I will say that the green rider was definitely faster than the guy that was in first and was pulling away from the pack. He also seemed to be the only one hitting the big double in the first moto. He was picking up alot of speed through here. I did notice a few mistakes, but keep in mind that the guys you race against are not to be taken for granted. They are fast as well. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

2nd moto: That was a great holeshot, and you were maintaining your lead and keep your pace very well.....atleast until the flag lady. That was very unfortunate. Really, I didn't see any problems with the second race. It looked good to me.

The only reason we werent hitting the big jump in the middle of the track was because the leader was holding us up.  Once the "green rider"  got around him he was able to do it and strech out on us.  That jump alone is good for 1 second a lap gain.  I can keep up with the "green rider" without issue just didnt capitlize and make an early pass on the leader.  Then i spiraled out of control after i started getting passsd.

I wasnt displeased with my performance really.  I know I could be faster than i was in moto 1.  Moto 2 showed it up untill the flag lady.

Thanks

I definitely relate to you about one thing though. It is not always easy to pass someone, even if you are faster than them. It really just depends on how wide the track is and if there are any good places to pass or not. I know when I raced my last race, there were quite a few places on that track that were really just too narrow to make a pass, even if you are faster. And i am not really accustomed to pushing people out of the way.

I usually do a good job passing, and i almost had him in the woops a couple times.   You can also see where we made contact in the corner in the back section.  He was riding extremely defensively taking all the inside lines.

Youre gonna get people fired up over those bdt plugs... im glad to see you doing great  on a R but i bet you could find a more honest builder.

I have no problems with my builder.  Hes been honest to me and there is no other builder that i have ever met that would help me out as much as my current one.  The only reason the plugs are there is becasue i coppied and pasted my post from the other site.  If it becomes an issue i can delete the post.  I dont want to but we seriously need to get past all this.

You make alot of noise? Are you kidding me? Some of the 4 strokes are deafening, the way their mufflers crackle.  I would rather hear a banshee ringing out then any four stroke.

I do that too! One of my favorite parts! lol I do get some looks for it as well. They take me more seriously though when they see me pull out in front of them.

I'll second that, noisy 4 poke high priced crap.
Tell you something else as well, probably not a single one of them 4 poke riders climb on that 2 stroke & do good, look like a bunch of rookies first time riding.

Oh i know...  I let the 2013 ATVA 450A champion ride my 250r around for a bit and he looked like a fish out of water.  It was almost comical, he didnt know when to shift or how to handle the power band.  It was seriously aweful.  And he is a talented rider.

I have my bike tuned with gearing in a way that i can almost ride it like a 4 stroke.  I dont shift a whole heck of a lot.  And with the super tall gearing and good tq im able to leave it in 3rd gear most of the race tracks.   Its very nice to be able to slide into a corner and stay in 3rd gear.

The corner before the option lane im in 4th coming up to it and i click down to 3rd for the corner and stay in 3rd through all the jumps.  Its pretty amazing to be able to stay in 3rd gear and power out from a corner that slow.

Its the same shifting stratgey i use on my can am.

Ya my bike does for some reason, but i actually pick up time on alot of jumps as well.  Im thinking its my suspension setup,  it must not kick me as high.... Especially teh finish line.

Im currently at 15/37.  It works for me,  Im flirting with trying 15/36 with my new pipe setup.  I think it can take it.   The point is to make less shifts on the track.

Pff i have no idea what my bike would do in 6th gear.  But it would be stuipid fast.  Next time i have my clutch cover off, im going to count the drive gear and clutch gear so that i can figure out my max speed with each gear on my quad.

From there i can compare them to my Can am and see how close i am.

Nice job.  That looks like a fun layout when it's groomed.  The whoops look like they have a lot of spacing.  That 2nd place guy in the 2nd moto looked like a bobble head doll through the whoops.  That 2nd holeshot was awsome. If the flag lady wasn't there you might have taken that one.
