Can we please have the "dirty words" auto-censor disabled. I suggest this on the grounds that curse words don't technically hurt people, we are all adults here and science has shown that "cuss words" have no negative effects on the personality or innocence of children.

Yes that may be true. But the children that do come on here don't need to see it. Parents will forbid the child growing up to learn about the 250r if we don't keep the forum clean.
-
how about a adult password'ed section for that stuff we can pm the password to people that want to participate
-
Swearing on a keyboard and swearing to someones face are two different things. Demeanor can be interpreted wrong when you are not looking someone in the face or hearing their tone.
-
Swearing will keep parents from letting their young children get on this forum to learn about the 250R. Ok.... Does anyone else have a better reason for censoring the "dirty words" ?

Well fighting with someone is one thing. We're not talkin bout that. I want to be able to pepper my posts with dirty curse word adjectives when I see fit to use one. Who's with me ?
Also, I can fool the shiity censorship software anyways. Come on its un-American to censor us !!! LOL

I was just quoting complaints from the other site. It is understood we do not all talk the same. I use the F word all the time and I don't even realize it. But when I come on here I want to work with level headed people that don't come on here to spew out words they think are funny. Sorry
I know you had the same request from the last 2 sites I read your posts.
-
I say keep it clean.... Let's keep it PG or better....
-

We have that on another site, except its based on a 500 post count, and no password. A password would be a must I believe, there was also a "no full nudity rule" also..lol
-
But when I come on here I want to work with level headed people that don't come on here to spew out words they think are funny. Sorry
Aw heck that's a real easy problem to solve, you personally just don't use those "naughty words" and others can choose for themselves.
-
I say keep it clean.... Let's keep it PG or better....
I'm not suggesting that we start a "dirty word contest" or something. Just want to be able to talk like an adult.... who's not in freakin' church.
-

Just stating my opinion bud, as you have stated yours. No hard feelings.
All we know is what is allowed is up to the owner of the site.
-
"I know you had the same request from the last 2 sites I read your posts. "
I know I complained about the censorship at 250R.net but I don't recall biitchin' about it at ATVRiders. I'd NEVER get ATVRiders to consider changing their policy.
The whole concept of forbidden "dirty words" has always blown my mind.... I don't think I'll ever understand why they cause freak people out. Adults on the internet no less. I've never met an adult who doesn't swear a little.
I'd like to see a more relaxed forum and my opposition would like to see a more tightly moderated forum.
-
Just stating my opinion bud, as you have stated yours. No hard feelings.
No no no, don't take anything I'm writing to anyone here as aggressive. I'm just having the conversation and replying with my case as clearly as I can. No hard feelings to anyone.

Well we're both pitchin' our side of the argument and you are on the side of censoring the "wicked words". But... you didn't explain why. Could you explain your reasoning for us ?
-
Well, I drive a tractor trailer for a living and I fully admit I have trucker mouth.
But, when I am dealing with my customers, I turn it off. I just don't feel it's acting in a professional manner to use profanity in business dealings. All by myself in the cab of my truck, when things make me mad, the flood gates sometimes get flung wide open.
Same thing when I am home around my kids, who are 9 and 5 years old. Yes, the milder bad language gets out in front of them. And only VERY VERY rarely in extreme situations I let a more serious word slip in front of them. Same when I'm around my Mom.
When I am conversing with people here on forums, I like to present myself in a respectful manner. It's not that I am trying to hide who I am, or hide the fact that when nobody is around I don't mind my tongue. It's just the way I was raised. Using good manners and respect goes a long way in my opinion.....
I guess in a way, I think that if we all mind our tongues in what we post, it puts out a much better image of who we are. Personally, I would rather be seen as a respectable adult, than a foul mouthed kid. And to be honest, when I see postings with alot of nonsensical swearing in it, the first thing that comes to my mind is "disrespectful kid, who doesn't deserve to be taken seriously".

Pal I swear to god I could say the same thing about me. Honestly. I'm a working class adult. But... this is an internet forum to talk about ATVS. We're just a bunch of dudes yappin about our kwads. I respectfully suggest to the forum admin to allow people to make the choice on their own. I personally will never ever be "dealing with customers" on this forum, so I would like to be able to speak as I see fit. Pro-choice !

I see what you are saying.
But try this one for size...
Look at the conversation you and I, 2 people with opposite opinions on this subject are having right now. We are both making our points, and understanding each other. Nobody is using curse words. Everything is running on an even keel.
Now, being that tone, friendly sarcasm and such can sometimes be difficult enough to detect in text like this as opposed to speaking face to face, I contend it would only be worse with foul language allowed in posts. People get their tighty-whitey's in a bunch easy enough as is.
IMHO, that is a factor as well..
BUT, I have a couple possible solutions that I would think would make both sides of the argument happy...
1: If possible, each member can choose to block/censor profanity his/herself in the user control panel.
OR
2: Another site I am a member of has a subforum called "Fight Club". A member must know and punch in a password to gain access to the fight club and certify being 18 or older. I know anybody can say they are over 18, but the mods there say they can usually sniff out a kid in the fight club and boot them out of there.
What do ya think?
-
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present Mr George Carlin. I warn you now, he says some very "dirty" words so don't watch this video with any children, customers or mothers in the house. If you are easily offended by certain words, don't watch the video. If you are a child, a customer or a mother, don't watch the video. Quick description of the video for those who can't watch it, Carlin explains the absurdity and beauty of language with a short story about his famous "7 dirty words" bit. I think the video is relative to this topic.

LOL! Carlin, great comedian, and a very smart guy!

Ok I hear ya. You're saying that if we're allowed to use certain adjectives it heats up a bad situation even faster and\or the "curse" words could trigger the wrong response because other people have bad reading compression/broken sarcasm detector. What about ever other conversation where there is no fighting. Where its just an adult using the words in conversation. I feel you guys are thinking of the worst possible scenarios. Tell yas what I'll agree too, if some people get into a shouting match here in the future and they start using all these "offensive" words and calling each other terrible curse-word names, then let the mods censor those particular "dirty" words or stop the fight or whatever. I would like to come here and say "my quad ran like shhiit today" without having to correct my language. Gunna reply to the rest of your comment asap ( i like your suggestions :) )

LOL...yeah you can post nudity, swear words and attack other members...but if you suggest a "racer forum" and post up facts a poll and members want it they ban you for life...LOL

I don't think #1 is possible. I don't think the forum software can do it. I would agree to that solution in a heartbeat, but I don't think its possible.
Solution #2. I think we should be able to speak freely in all forums and a special forum where you can say these forbidden words negates all arguments for a censored forum.

I see where you are coming from, and generally don't see much harm in the context of the example you gave. :)

You got banned AGAIN??!!
Is there a forum you aren't banned from Bill??!! LOL! Kidding! :D
Yeah, I stayed out of that one, but it did seem like you were fighting an uphill battle from the word go....

In a situation where the efforts of the moderating team is to keep the kids out of the fight club, I disagree with that statement. I think most of us in favor of keeping it clean are most concerned with the example we are setting for kids.
-

Right. My problem, and some of you guys can confirm this, is that my history of forum comments are often long and I like to ramble on and describe stuff in detail and basically I just love to write and love talkin' about quads. I feel like I can express myself better if I'm not subjected to arbitrary and honestly IMO silly censorship.
-

I promise you the children will not be harmed in any way, shape or form.
I'm going to say something that might shock a few people. I want you go to your favorite search engine and search for the word "boobs". Trust me, your kid has searched for the word boobs and if they haven't, well then they're too young to be on a internet forum :).
-
LOL!
Well, I've spoken my piece.. Guess I'll shaddap now and we will see what Jon decides to do on this subject.
-
More interesting thoughts on this topic.
What about videos ?
What words are censored ?
Could I get certain words censored that I see fit as offensive ?
Could we have a "children's only" sub-forum ?
At what age do children become immune to the "cursed" words ?
Give us an example, a personal story, how "dirty" words on a ATV forum effected your life negatively.
How many future children will be reading this forum that have not heard or used any of the censored language ?
Do we want an authority figure or another user telling us what we can and can not say ?
-
LOL!

Why do you think you have the right to cuss in front in everyone whether they like it or not. Most of us are grown up but that does mean we come here to spew obscenities and expect others to listen. Why don't you go somewhere else and stir the pot? This is a new site and you think you can come in here and ask us to listen to your side. How selfish are you? No wonder 2R's never liked you.

My point of view is why is cussing necessary? I have worked in a shop all my life, and I admit to having a foul mouth at times, with the guys. I also understand want to say "my quad rode like s$&t". But is it that important to have to actually say the word? Not at all. For most of this is a family sport. My 6yr old son loves quads, and loves to see pics of members quads. He can also read, very well in fact, and is really good with my phone and our iPad! Now it is my responsibility as a parent to monitor what hes doing, and I do,but lets say I get up to help my 3yr old,or I go to the bathroom,do I want to deny him looking at quads because someone needs to talk that way,not really. I dont have a solution, only my opinion.

I'm tryin to be polite here, but 'll tell ya what pal, why don't you back off. Someone please help me here.

Point taken,it was not my intent to start/stir anything in any way. Just showing a different side on how I share the sport with my kids. I apologize if it came across wrong

I was talking to meat about moving on. This is going to be a clean site for our girlfriends and wives. Censorship will not be taken away by one individual who acts like he's being picked on. You don't want to butt heads with me meat. I have been fighting the other site for a long time. I am here to get away from the XXX. You are just stirrin the pot and you must move on.
-
"There really isn't a reason I should have to give as to why it's not allowed, it just isn't."
All my time and effort and the reason I'm shot down is because "it just isn't". Thank you for hearing me out, I think it stinks, but I'll drop the subject.
-

I believe its you who is pot stirring. Spiritaces can you please tell him to stop threatening me.

I was like what did I do wrong! LOL I agree, clean family site and time to move on,lets talk about quads!!
-

Fine, I apologize. I won't threaten you. I understand you want to be heard. I don't want to argue with you. You seem like nice respectable guy. We have just had to deal with alot of things lately and don't want anymore problems. You do tend to go on and on. Jon did not ask me to be nice. I just support the way he sees fit to run the site.
-
"The real reason is because the majority of the people don't want swearing."
I think the jury is still out but.... with that said, I can totally respect your reason and I'll stop discussing it. I am happy that the reason is because 'the majority of people' are pro-censorship. This is how a great forum is run. It is constantly refined by its members suggestion and not one or two over-bearing moderators.

Hey man thats awesome. I apologize for upsetting you, I knew my topics were going to be controversial and I made sure that I was respectful as I could possibly be. I have opinions and I would like to share them, and I do go on and on, so I'll try not offend yas till yas get to know me a little better :D.

So you were just testing us? That's fine. I spent 10 days banned and then got 30 more for ff's reason he's got to make money. We started this forum for the members. A lot of criticism was given from joe blow on the other site because of heated arguments. I may not be your friend and I do not want to fight. Just did not want to "go there" right away.
-
Meat, this will never be a one or two pony show, I promise. We started this forum to avoid persecution from a one trick pony and vowed to the people of the 250r community to be fair, considerate, and above all let all voices be heard.
Can't ask for a better comment than that ^^^^
-
"So you were just testing us? " Oh both I guess, I'd say 90% of my motivation was to remove the censorship and to discuss why and why not, the other 10% of me wanted to gauge the general direction of the moderation style. I don't want to participate in a forum with an overbearing moderator because I have a problem keeping my mouth shut with bullies.
I'd love to argue with you on any topic as long as you don't ban me for it. And come one... admit it, the "ffpowersports jr" jab I threw at ya was a good one LOL. I believe we can argue online and still be friends, I do it all the time :o .
-
And come one... admit it, the "ffpowersports jr" jab I threw at ya was a good one LOL.
You are right it was a good one. It is not funny when some one says it to you. LOL But if you said it about someone else I would laugh.
