Don't think I ever re-posted the pics from my build process on this site...so here it goes
Started with a basically stock '86 250R:
Picked up a Lonestar frame and swinger. Rath monster nerfs, HiPers, GBC X-Rex rubber all the way around
(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t457/tbone0785/TRX250R/P1050048_zpsde8cffe5.jpg)
Then found the frame and chassis I couldn't pass up: '97 Laeger Narrow No-Link
(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t457/tbone0785/P1050069_zpsa8105d5b.jpg)

Roll Design +3 a-arms; with the narrow chassis it turns out to be approximately 48" wide...about the max you want for XC/GNCC riding
(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t457/tbone0785/TRX250R/P1050096_zps07ad61f5.jpg)

One thing I really liked was where the stabilizer is mounted...keeps it out of the elements for longer life
(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t457/tbone0785/TRX250R/P1050117_zps57f4944e.jpg)
450r rear brake setup:
450r caliper(any year will work)
450r brake stay(any year will work) in this case I used a Blingstar rotor guard (not pictured)
450r brake rotor (any year)
450r brake rotor hub(any year)
2 washers in between caliper and brake stay
250r axle nut

What is the part # for that crank tool
-
And the bike looks great man.
-
Nice work my friend.Shes a bute.
-
I have lakers myself and I have found that they can look better with a couple "tweaks", if you are interested
drill new holes in the front fender mounts (about 1/2" away from the 90 degree bend) and then bend the top (where the fender mounts) down a bit
It will bring the fenders down closer to the frame and make it not look like the fenders are way up in the clouds, I hated how they looked
Very nice build though! how do you like the no-link?
-
The Lakers fit very well and the quality of the plastic is great.
More pics will be coming when I put my SSI graphics kit on.

she's a beaut clark

Beautiful work... Black hipers white plastic looks great!
Sano engine stand!!
-
Very nice! I'm curious what are the extended and compressed lengths of your front shocks? 21 or 22" tires? I have a similar chassis I want to build up for XC. Also are you going to run a skid plate to protect the chain guide and sprocket or just a sprocket guard?
-
I'd have to look for the paper I had with compressed/un-compressed lengths.
21'' fronts and 20'' rears.
I need to come up with something to protect the chain guide because the mount already broke. I have a blingstar guard for the rotor but i'd like to get rid of that also. Have to fab up some mounts so I can run 450r skids next year
-
Off-season refresh coming soon. Few little additions and modifications to the chassis, and a LED 350 Sphynx kit with LED pipe and silencer.
-
Looking forward to seeing the refresh, especially with the Led parts!!
-
I have to disassemble the OEM motor I got from Kasey, and send the case halves to Arlen so he can bore them and match up the transfer port ducts. Probably do that this weekend.
Then everything will be sent back to me and i'll assemble the motor myself
-
Awesome build thread! Looks amazing!
-
Cases, Sphynx, trued/welded/balanced crank, 350G pipe and silencer should be at my doorstep on Friday!
-
Then we better gets pics Friday! !!
-
ahhhh quad porn im drooling right now

Thanks for sharing info on the pv motor. Nice machine.

Well look what the 250R gods left on my doorstep today :)

Wow, bet you are a happy camper now. Sweet pipe and motor!
-
Hell yeah, that pipe looks badass!! Why would anyone want chrome?!
-
Freaking Sick! I need to follow your lead and drop the dough already. Is it a PV cylinder?
-
Nice setup man.....looks to be non-powervalve.

That's what I thought. For some reason I had PV on the brain.
-
Very nice Tbone, I want that same setup.
-
Look sweet I'm envious.
-
Nice!! Now get that thing together. Love the look of that pipe raw.
-
Very nice!!! Can't wait to see it all together!!
Thanks higgy

Very nice power plant.

sweet. i been contemplating the idea of putting a spynx or puma jug on a cr250 cases
-
sweet. i been contemplating the idea of putting a spynx or puma jug on a cr250 cases
Arlan did put a 350 Sphynx PV in a CR250 dirt bike recently..

-
the video is pretty cool. i wonder what modification is needed on that year of cr250 cases ? really i havent done a ton of research but i was under the impression a puma would bolt directly to the older cr250 cases from the mid 80's. and since them bikes can be found real cheap, thats what i was thinking of using. but hell if that cylinder can also be easily fit to the mid 90'[s cases then maybe that a better idea. the PV is cool but i was thinking nonPV since it would just be a drag racer
-

What did you do with the PV cylinder?
-
The cylinder bolts on, but with a power valve the coil need to be moved for clearance. We also moved the brake reservoir.
Great photo's

looks like the stud pattern matches up but is there some kind of adaptor plate needed or is the jug just a direct bolt on ? also the cr250 has water go through the cases. do you machine out water holes in the bottom of the jug ? the water routing was the main reason i thought the cp cylinder wouldnt work on the newer cr250 cases but i never really investigated it much
-
What did you do with the PV cylinder?
I've still got it. Going to unload it
-
The CPI/PRO-X cylinders already have the holes in the bottom/front for water, you can see them at 4:35 of the video. I would imagine you would have to block off the water inlet at the rear of the cylinder that is used on a TRX setup.
-
We used the water fitting on the back of the cylinder like a trx, although we routed the hose differently. We made a plate with an air bleed where water outlet line would go to the head. No spacer plate was needed as we used the stock 125.3 mm rod. We peaked this engine at a very low rpm (7250 rpm). That is very good power for that rpm and with the restrictive stock air box. Our next project is a 08 YZ 250. We are building for motocross and we will turn it more rpm, probably peak it at 7800 - 8000 rpm.
-
Arlan did you help develop this cylinder for the application or did CP have this in the works already. I ask because the cylinder base stud bolt pattern on the CR in 97-01 motors is not the same as a TRX and it appears in the video that the cylinder base gasket area marches the CR which is also different than the TRX. Looks cool
-
ok i understand. you blocked off the water outlet of the head with a plate. water still goes through the case and theres 2 holes already machined in the bottom of the jug. then your using the outlet on the back of the jug. makes sense now. i never knew there was the holes already in the bottom cylinder for water. good info :encouragement:. ill bet theres a ton of cr250 guys that arent aware of this that would probly be real interested.
so the spynx and puma can both be used on the cr250 cases ?
-
Got my motor together for the most part. It's been in the teens for the last couple months but finally some better weather this week.

Hand cone pipes are beautiful. Cant wait to get me some LED love. I seriously will not reply to any more of your post if you plate that pipe. :black_eyed:

Boing!!!

It is beautiful but it already has some very very minor surface rust and I haven't even used it yet! Some WD-40 will take care of it.
Killer_250R's pipe is chromed and it look sick. I'll see how long I can stand cleaning and oiling it
-
super nice motor and pipe man,, cant wait to see more
-
Got some good work done this weekend. The motor went in without a hitch, and got the LED 350G pipe all mounted up. Initially it was a pain to mount but once I got it adjusted it fits perfectly and is mounted very solid. Unfortunately the bolt hole on the Laeger headstay doesn't line up with the Sphynx head, but i'll need it for my steering stabilizer
I'm able to get about 3.5in of adjustment out of the pipe but i'll need some longer bolts if I want to go that far. I'm not sure how much of a difference the adjustments will make power wise, but it really helped with fitment of the pipe. It's tough fitting that bigger header through a Laeger narrow frame.

you might want to check the rest of the mounts..my 363 sphynx lined up to my protrax headstay.. I don't have a no link but I do have a narrow with the head stay with stabilizer mount...it took a few tries to get all the mounts perfect, but I got them all after playing around with it..
it was off like yours at first then I loosened everything and started over,a couple of times before they all fit
-

Little progress here....spent most of the weekend building an XC track, wait till you guys see that.

Holy Freakin Crap!!! That's a freaking case saver! Good lord, I didn't realize that made such a monster. lol!
-
I didn't even know upp made poly case savers for the R. How much did it set you back?
All the intake manifolds I have for my 38/39 carbs are from upp. All were good except for the last one I bought. The hole for the carb was a little off set. So one side was really thin. And the rubber had small holes in it like air was in the rubber while it set.
-
That case saver is a beast!
It's a monster lol. I think it will be perfect and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. I think a lot of cases could have been saved if they had this to protect them. Those little aluminum savers don't do squat
I think the case saver was $59.95, it's on UPP's site if you need to check it out
-
Do you have a pic of the case saver with the stator cover mounted (from the front)? Will the shifter fit on there ok?

Thanks Higgy

I'm hook-line-sinker on those case savers too. I love mine.

I do not have a pic of it mounted with the stator cover yet. I'll have one soon. After looking at it closely it looks like it will fit fine
The shifter will definitely fit
-

I got the stator cover on there yesterday and it fit pretty well. It rubs the case saver slightly, but went on pretty well.
-
So I mounted up my rear shock to check clearance with my pipe and my worst fear was confirmed....the stinger hits the shock pretty badly.
My buddy @ HMF has my swingarm to weld rotor guard mounts, so when I get a roller i'll get it in there and he can use the pipe bender to make it fit perfectly. I'm lucky to have HMF about 5 minutes from my work
-
Here's the LED 350G after my buddy @ HMF modified it for me. Really should have told Arlan what frame I had, i'll take the blame for that.
Also fabbed me up a beefy stainless rotor guard

But still wouldn't have been able to make the bend would he since he doesn't have a frame to go by? I want another one of these pipes but that's my only downfall
-
He might have one to go off of, i'm not sure. I neglected to even mention it to him or ask him
-
Good to see some updates! When is this thing going to be all buttoned up?
-
He might have one to go off of, i'm not sure. I neglected to even mention it to him or ask him
I may be in the same boat with the shock and headstay....LOL. Can't wait! Didn't even think about that.

Tbone07 hope you don't mind. This is my beat to hell 86 engine but this is what the UPP saver looks like mounted. And yes I know my chain has seen better days but who cares when you have one of these bad boys installed.

I may be in the same boat with the shock and headstay....LOL. Can't wait! Didn't even think about that.
But my Sparks MX pipe fits perfectly....

Don't mind at all. Those UPP case savers are the bee's knees, a very good investment

I actually ordered one awhile ago. Very nice... really snug fit. Only problem, I had to swap out the 10mm bolts heads for 8mm bolt heads. I couldn't fit my socket inside the holes.

Looks like my project is gonna take a little longer now

WTF!!! How'd that happen!!??

Too much power! J/k Sorry man that really sucks for sure.

was your swingarm hitting the motor??or is it just cause the way its broke that makes it look like that?
-
Yikes, sorry to see that! I've been following your build because I'll be getting a Sphynx this summer. I'm also curious as to how it happened. The force to do that must have been incredible. I'm assuming it involved the chain somehow?

Nope the chain didn't have anything to do with it. I'll post some pics when I get it apart tonight

Found this sitting in the bottom of the cases.....

Ouch! What was that?
-
It's one of the two bolts for the kick-start mechanism.
-
I'll be sure to use red Loctite the next time I have the engine apart.
-
Picked up the NOS OEM cases from Steve. It might be a sin to bore these out but that's exactly what i'm gonna do.
While i'm at it i'm picking up a new Baldwin transmission. She should be bulletproof now

Nice!
-
Now you're in business!
-
You lucky sob! I would have loved them for my 87 build but I have too much other stuff I NEED first. Can't wait till you get this back together and give a full ride report.

Neither can I. I was watching the TRX250R tribute video on YouTube and it got the blood flowing lol

Got some good seat time in this weekend. She ran very well for not touching the carb at all. Once I get the bottom end cleaned up she should be perfect
Smoked all the 450's I rode with lol

what are you doing to that bearing race there?
-
what are you doing to that bearing race there?
That red laser at the end of the tool goes and touches all 4 corners of the crank seal race, which finds exact dead center.
Then that CNC table rotates, pivots up and does the exact same thing for the case bore opening. I believe this finds the X and Y axis.
-
nice, alot more precise than my dial indicator on my 3 axis fryer LOL
-
A lot of drool on these last few pics Tbone07!

That CNC mill is almost as nice as your bike haha. Great job on your build!

Love all the pics! Especially the one when you are on one wheel!! I love doing that....

Haha thanks! I'm lucky that my uncle owns a huge plastic injection mold shop. He can do pretty much anything. I really wish I knew more about it though.

I wish I could say that it was planned lol

if you dont mind me asking how much does a new tranny cost? how strong is it compared to an old oem one or a set of yukons?

It cost quite a bit, more than i care to admit. But the Baldwin gears aren't made anymore. I'd imagine these are pretty much the same design as Yukons. I can't remember where Mark Baldwin had these made.

Like all others, damn it's big! (#that's what she said)

Little off-season update....
Got a good ride in with the LED 350 at Hatfield McCoy. Through the last few times of riding her I learned of some minor improvements/additions I need to make. So in the offseason i'll be adding:
1. IMS 4.0 gal tank
2. Precision Bar Clamps or Flexx Bars
3. Maier or Fullbore full fender plastic
4. Gripper seat cover
5. New air-box setup
6. Maybe switch to CR500 link rear
7. Complete tear down and clean up
I'll post pictures as all this stuff takes place
-
I wanted to get killer_250r to post a pic of his Roll airbox setup. Not necessarily the intake tract, but the airbox

All good sounding plans. I loved my factory effex cover. Very grippy and just a clean solid black.

Got some goodies starting to roll in for this season. Should be getting my new Fourwerx hump seat and foam soon too

on the 89 intakes, they had an expansion bottle that slid into the intake on the side and mounted there.

Ya there's a good amount of metallic in it. I'll take pics out in the sun and it'll show it better.

It went awesome. Guy is an artist with a welder.
He's more than willing to make a-arms and swingarms for the R. I believe he said minimum of five to make a run? I'm not 100% sure but Joe and I will get a definitive answer when we pick our stuff up
-
Check out his site and look at the 450R a-arms. They would be that same design
