I got a basket case R on the cheap and the frame is in worse shape than I thought. someone re-engineered the motor mounts with angle iron on top and some additional metal hanging down below. The back area between the lower a-arm mounts is rusted through and the shifter side frame down tube where the lower subframe is completely cracked off. is there a way to cut this out and fix it? should I just toss the frame in the scrap pile? thoughts?

I would trash it and get a good frame off here or ebay. If the frame is probably tweaked and will have to straightened back out to repair. I'm sure it can be repaired but after the time and money spent to repair someone else's mess you could get a good frame.

Weld the serial number to an aftermarket frame. :ride:

Yikes!!!!!! That is ugly. :nightmare: We in the south, have a name for that type of engineering. :afro:

I have repaired the front part where is rusted through. But that break at the tube bend at the swinger area is alot of work to repair. Kinda looks like Junes bike. He bought another frame instead of trying to fix the unfix-able.

ethnically engineered

not very pc f red

When I first saw the break at the sub frame, I was thinking "great time to add a detachable sub frame"....only set back is there is no where to attach it to...

Tony, you can have the front motor mounts to copy for an ultra beefy option :congratulatory:
I guess I'll post the frame on the other site to see if anyone wants it. Sometimes I see people looking for junk frames so they hack out a misc part they need to fix their frame. I got this one for the motor and pipe, will probably attempt to part out the rest of this jalopy

If you part it out let me have first crack at the Thumb Throttle and cable (if it has one).

Thats ok, I will pass. Looks like an attempt to keep the motor in place as everything else breaks away. If you have the 88-89 frame many people are interested in the tube that the swingarm connects to. Same with the lower mounts the front motor mounts bolt to, if they are not already broken.

Yea man chop it up and use it as an organ doner. Tony helped me in this situation once. Give life to other frames.

Heck send the frame to tony so he can possibly make that rear upper motor mount for the 86-87 frames so you can run a 88-89 swingarm. And maybe make some lower motor mounts also.

I was just heckling Tony about this the other day. I would love it if somenoe were making a "weld in" rear motor mount for the 86-87 frames so you can put the 88-89 swingarm on them.

That is why I said that bud, I remember you saying that to him.

My first R had a frame that was similar to this. I sold it for $75 to a guy that said he was going to chop it up and build a drag frame.

Yes, please recycle....Great option for a street bike motor. We did a 550 ninja. Paid $50 for a bent frame. All the lower rails needed to be reworked anyway.
