Title: Difference between '86 and '87
Post by: zarathos on September 18, 2013, 05:54:31 PM
I know this is probably a stupid rookie question... What differences, if any, are there between the '86 and '87? Is seat and tank color different? I see some that are red and some are blue.:confused-new:

The shock is a little longer on the 86-87, swingarm and dog bone is different, motor mount on the swingarm, the front frame motor mounts, the top rad mounts, rear grab bar holesre further apart ( quick means longer grab bar on the frame), foot peg mounts are different, also.

jaime, do you mean these things differ from '86 to '87? Or that these differ from 86-87 to 88-89? Also, fred, the '87 is a longrod and the '86 is not?

As far as seat, tank & hood honda made blue & red versions in both 86 & 87 with white fenders. On the 86 the word fourtrax is on the front fender graffic with a bare seat (except for the word honda on the back) & in 87 there was no words on the front fender graffic, the word fourtrax was on the side of the seat. Like stated above the front engine mounts are a dead giveaway because the 87-89 were the same. 86 was the only year with the clamshell style (I think thats what there called) front engine mounts.

The 86 had different front motor mounts and the bumper mounts up front. I believe it also moved from a short rod to long rod motor. There were also variations in seat and tank colors. The front motor mount and bumper mount are dead giveaways.
They are only different cosmetically. All years bolt up the same. The main difference was the change from short to long rod.

Hmm... Seems to be some difference of opinion on this subject. Some are saying there are multiple mechanical differences between the two years, some say the only differences are cosmetic. Anyway, I'm mostly just asking because I would like to do at least a partial restoration on my '87 and don't want to be wasting time and money on things that I thought would fit both years, but only fit '86. I bought a factory front bumper and skid plate that I thought fit both '86 and '87, but so far I can't get it to fit properly. Not sure yet if it doesn't fit because its for the wrong year or maybe my frame is tweaked or something. The bumper appears to be straight, square and un-damaged. Also, was just curious what color seat and tank my quad would have had originally, I doubt the tank or seat I have are original to this machine.
