Are there color codes for PC like in automotive paint? I want to PC my frame the original honda red, but I don't have anything to match it to.
-
My pc guys has a color that is real close,I can ask him tomorrow if no one else knows. He also has a gold that peaked my interest!
-
Great! Thanks!
-
I think it is called Baron Red

Yeah best to call since you can get a bunch more free samples - the guy I talked to a few months back actually was rebuilding a couple 250R's as well.
-
also try powder by the pound they will send you samples sprayed on metal swatches
-
Thanks guys. I checked out prismatic powders website - looked like they had some that were pretty close, but hard to tell. Ill probably contact my powder coater monday and see what brand powder they use and try to get some samples.

Talk to Andy Seibel, K10Seibel, he restores 250r's and has the colors down for powder. He's matched it all.
-
Mirror Red is what I went with, dont know the brand though. Also getting some gold done called Summerset Gold, fairly close to oem with a little more metallic, cant wait!
-
Looks like I'm going with the Red Barron and Bumper Black from dupont. I'll let you know how it turns out and post some pics.

This was supposed to be Red Barron red from dupont, but my powder coater only used PPG and had them match it. Seems way too orange to me. Think I might just blast it off and try again with another color. :dejection:

This is what I've used and it looks nice.

Thanks Farmboy. Ill look in to that. I've ordered color chips from several companies. Trouble is all the powder coaters around here only deal with one brand and if I find a red I like in a brand they don't use, they will try to match it but it hasn't turned out very well so far.

They won't shoot powder if you take it in to them?

They probably would.
The issue came when the first PC place told me they were gonna charge $175 plus the cost of powder. I didn't think the powder would cost too much since the Red Barron red was their most popular red, the bumper black was their most popular black, and they had plenty of both. After looking at samples, I figured that the colors were pretty close so i had the frame blasted and then dropped it off at the powder coater right away to avoid any surface rust. They then called me back and told me it was gonna cost $625. I told them I would come and get it. I then took it straight to PC place #2 who said they would do both colors for $350 total. This guy was working alone out of his house part time. The only way he could keep the price low was if he went through PPG where he gets a volume discount. So he called them and told them he needed their equivilant of Duponts Red Barron Red. He said since they were "custom mixed" colors they were gonna take several days to get. I never got to see a sample after he got the powder in. I never even saw his operation he was pretty insitant on picking up the frame and parts and then delivering them to me. After waiting 4 weeks this is what I got. I'm not sure if they didn't mix it right, wasn't applied correctly, or I didn't look at the original color sample close enough, but it dosen't seem to match. I had to send it back once because there were thin spots and dirt specs in it. He took back and re-shot it that night and brought it back first thing in the morning. After staring at it in the sun, I don't think I'll ever get past the orange in it. I'm waiting on some color samples from several companies. So now, I'm probably gonna get it blasted again and find another place do the coating. There seems to be a lack of reputable PC companies around here (several wouldn't even answer their phone or return messages).
Sorry about the rant, but I've been trying to get this frame done for over a month now.

Where you located at turftamer?

It would probably be best if you put a coat of paint the correct color over the top. PC will last a long time. Its just not easy to blast it off. You have a good base coat. Basically it would just be a primer for the paint. Polyurethane goes on like its wet all the time. The coat you have there is not shiny at all. Sorry you are having all these issues.

Thanks Tony. That might be worth a try. The guy who does my sandblasting is really good and his prices are very reasonable. Hopefully I'll get a chance to call around tomorrow.

FINALLY!!!

After almost 3 months and 4 different powder-coaters, I finally got my frame and all components powder coated correctly and in the right color! My local body shop said paint wouldn't stick to the powder. They said they'd be happy to charge me $450 and shoot the frame, but wouldn't guarantee anything. I ended up having the frame chemically stripped and media blasted at Gateway Powder Coating. After looking through countless color samples, I decided to go with prismatic powders "Very Red" plus a coat of clear over the top. There's still a few parts I need to get before I can start final assembly, but this provided a huge boost in motivation. I'll have more pics when I start my build thread.

Looking good, I like the clear coat shine. Great start you got there.:encouragement:
