Title: Making an R fit a big guy
Post by: zarathos on October 04, 2013, 11:08:02 AM
So my bro-in-law is interested in getting an R. The problem is that he is 6'5" 290lbs. I know we can make enough power with one to haul him around, but what about physically fitting him. Any of you big and tall guys out there got some pointers on making an R fit him better?

Raise the bars. There are different ways of doing that.

Duct tape a couch cushion to the frame with the seat off..    Got Hemroids?      That guy will look like me tryin to ride my daughter's barbie Power Wheels      He'll be able to steer with his knees...  I cant stop laughing at the thought of seeing it ..  Please post pic of him on a r...

Seat, pegs, and bars with less sweep (that'll move his elbows away from his midsection). The ds 650 idea is a good one also.

Yeah the ds650 is a good idea. He used to own one, I mentioned buying another but he didn't seem too interested in it. He's more of a two-stroke guy, has had two cr500Rs. He was thinking about getting another cr500R, but really wants a dune quad so I said he should find a 'Zilla. He's a Honda guy and said the my R had enough power for him, plus there's room to grow power-wise so the only issue is making it fit better. Sounds like we can find a way.

I don't weigh as much as him but I am 6'4" 230lbs and fit on one just fine.  The biggest thing that helped me is the +2+1 stem.  Taller seat foam would also work great.

Taller stem, but I really dont see the need for desert foam though. I am 6'3" and I weigh 230-240lbs and have no problem riding mine. They make +3+1 stems and if its a stock frame you can find nerfs or pegs that have been lowered by and inch and back the same. Good luck and have fun setting one up for him.

Keep in mind extended steering stems also angle back towards the rider. Maybe some rox risers.

If all is set rite rk88r the +3+1 really helps and it doesn't feel like it comes back that far, I run +2+1 on the lsr and it help3ed out a ton and I was so much more comfortable to.

+2+1 for me I'm only 6'2" though. Maybe you'll hit a growth spurt Jon. :playful:

Lots of good ideas mentioned here. Im thinking at 6'5", his boot size will be rather gigantic and will also benefit from an extended shifter. Probably something custom. I don't see a +1 being large enough. Peg and stem position (as mentioned) will do wonders!

I'm 6'3" myself. A 88-89 seat ht, pegs down and back a little, and play with bars/stem combo. I think the rox risers are a good idea as well depending on bars and stem combo. There are so many different possible bar height and stem combinations. A taller bar will also go more forward naturally then a short bar when in it's nutral position. For a lot of taller stem short bar combos a 1" forward stem still won't get you back forward enough. When you go back a bit on the pegs it will also give him more boot room with the shifter and brake pedal that can be kept that way if needed.

Thanks for all the advise and input guys! I/We really appreciate it. Sounds like we are going to start looking for a good R for him.

I would get a +2 +1 steering stem and possibly a set of +1 bar risers so the stem would actually be +3 a nice set of handle bars with a bend that feels good to him and the taller desert seat foam and he should fit just fine. One of the best things he could do for himself to is to get some quality aftermarket a arms and shocks and have the shocks set up by a reputable builder (many to choose from) for his weight and ride style.  Get all three shocks done too not just the front!

And if you find an 88/89 you can put 86/87 pegs on it and lower the pegs that way.
