I fill mine until it starts to come out of the check hole and its good. No more than what is needed and I've not had a issue at all.

I usually give mine a little extra. IDK the exact amount, just an extra squirt out of the red honda oil bottle. I've done both the exact amount and the extra squirt thing for years(about 10 years of both, yes I've had my R that long) and never had any problems with either method. Just make sure that you have at least to the oil check bolt in your R. BTW that extra squirt is about 50 ml. Either way works fine though, but I prefer the little extra oil way.

650cc. The best oil imo to run is amsoil 20w50. Tranny shifts so smooth and oil changes are less frequent.

I'm not trying to start anything here or over there out of respect for both sites. He asked a question and got an answer, but not from you. Shouldn't your results be the "best"?

Ok, whats wrong with the transmission oil subject starting all over again ?. Are we suppose to be here to help ?.
There may be those out there, that this may be their first TRX250R they've ever owned & do not at this point know the proper OEM amount of oil to go in the trans, OR, the proper extra preventive amount of oil, that a long time TRX250R owner normally pours into their transmission.

As a long time 250R owner, I for years have put in 3/4 of a qt of oil in the transmission. Why, because if your the type only going to tool around in the yard from time to time, the proper OEM amount of oil is just fine, but do any of us owners use our 250R like that.
The extra oil added over the OEM amount, does several things.
#1
The higher oil level before the engine has been cranked up, will be high enough to be in the area where the big balancer bearing sits & will pre-lube that bearing before start up & in turn make it last longer.
#2
The oil level being that high, should the clutch side crank seal go out & not seal that area, trans oil will be sucked into the crankcase & will make the engine smoke like crazy on start up & while running & will alert you of a problem.
#2 is the most important, because if the extra amount of oil is not there to be sucked into the crankcase, then it will be raw air sucked in & probably seize up the piston from the engine being lean.

May not seem important to some if someone ask this question, but our place as a respectable member on this site, would be to help with any question asked from whom ever asked it.

ya that makes perfect sense, I've always used just the right amount, but that has changed my mind about the oil level

thanks Neil for your input. i probably should have worded my question differently than i did and maybe it wouldnt have started another episode. i mainly was wanting to know how much extra i could add and not spray oil out the vent tube. you have been a great help to me over the past year by answering my PMs on the other site. ive had Rs  since i was 13 and except for the last couple of years always had a few in the basement but until the last year or so. this was my first build from the ground up just starting with a bare frame and buying everything else as i went. so i had quite a few bugs to work out and probably saved a bunch of money by being able to come on the internet and get answers. a lot of you guys have helped me a great deal Neil, tony, and a host of others. my sons bike is now up and running great and without .ORG and .NET we ( son and me) wouldnt have been able to do it without much moire trial and error so thanks to all who have helped.

Guess which website pops up first in a google search for "TRX250r transmission oil"?  .ORG isn't even on the first page of results.

IMO, even though this subject has been beaten to death, I still think it's worth the pain to help the site grow.

I did not think the oil level topic has been beat to death, more which brand is best seams to be the best always gets beat to death.

And for the record my Liger at 110hp has run tractor fluid all season with stock honda fibers, anodized aluminum plates, barnett springs and NO lockup.
100+ dyno pulls and 100's of dune and track  passes on the clutch setup with no issues. :)

It's from O Reilys(however you spell it, the auto parts place). Comes in 5 gal buckets for about 50 bucks. A lot of cr500 guys swear by it, but I haven't tried it personally. Seems to be the real deal by everything I've read about it. Obviously Dave has been having success with it too.

Detailed Description
O'Reilly Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is formulated specially for use in transmissions, final drives, wet brakes, and hydraulic systems of tractors and other equipment which employs a common fluid reservoir.   O'Reilly Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is manufactured with the highest quality base stocks, a viscosity index improver, oxidation and corrosion inhibitors, antiwear and film strength additives, an antifoaming agent, and a pour point depressant.

Yep the cr500 forum  guys have been running this for a while and I have a season and a half of using strickly this and have to admit it works great. I am sure other brands work but this is what the cr500 forum guys liked so I just used it.

I believe you can buy it in smaller 1 gallon jugs also, I change mine after every weekend which is probably extreme but I have always done that and I have used all of it except a couple quarts. so I have spent less than 50 for a season and a half of racing for trans oil which is normally about twice that.
