I was just thinking if we can't buy our Ignition System from HONDA anymore.....and the AFTERMARKET units aren't up to snuff...Why not try some other OEM units that are readily available.
I went online and started looking at fiches of the competitors 2-stroke Ignitions and thought what if a KTM 300XC ignition could be modded to fit our 250R's ? :)
Any thoughts on this sort of thing ?

You will probably want to get a used one to keep from spending alot on something that may not work. Seems like a good idea. Bolting up is gonna be your first task... then timing. Keep us posted on what you are finding out! Probably would work the best to have a working model so you can check to see that everything is lined up 3 dimensionally.

I think that is a excellent idea, but KTM stuff is normally a little pricey so if we could look at the Yamaha 250 stuff maybe that would be cheaper and more plentiful
But the more compact the box and simpler wiring like the 00-01 cdi would be the best choice IMO
The TRX is unique that it has room for a adapter plate to be made that could just about allow any ign to be mounted.
The 98-99 cr250 I am sure is also digital and is just like the 02+ size wise so they could be option also, we just dont have any curves on those.

What does ESR know? Eddie is making the adapter plate, for the CR250 02-07. How do we aquire those curves?

Dave posted the 02 and 03 curves a couple days ago.

I found them. Thanks Tony.
The 02-03 both have a strange shape. Is there anyone selling these 02+ ignitions as a kit?

That's what I thought too!....then I did some research:
2014 YZ 250 2007 KTM 300XC
Stator: $217.90 $187.07
Rotor $187.97 $200.60
CDI $245.64 $229.17
Coil $66.92 $43.69
Harness $69.08 $52.15
Total: $787.51 $712.68
So they're really close :)

OK they are pretty close, but I am sure most guys would go the used route if possible since new ignitions seam very reliable.
We would need to check average ebay prices for whats out there also, then see who could cut adapter plates.
Then of course the ign curves would need to be mapped so we dont have curves like the 2003 cr250 :(
-
Dave, were you not able to find the curves, for the 04-07 CR250?
-
I dont find the curves :) i have to test the boxes to make the curves

So if you came across someone with a KTM300 2-Stroke you could test the CDI box and map a curve ?
That is Awesome!
I just figured the KTM route might be easier as they're components are closer to HONDA's than YAMAHA's.... ;)

well.... maybe, when I test my setups now I have to mark TDC on the flywheel in relation to the stator position on a motor. then mount it to my test stand and spin the flywheel assembly. The problem would be marking the two with out a adapter plate already made for this to mount to a cr500 or trx250r motor other wise I need a whole KTM motor.
There is the possibility of mixing CDI's with stock stator/flywheels Depending on the motorcycle most of the earlier stators were a high voltage/low current configuration, the later years have lowered voltage but increased current like on the 98+ stator/cdi's, and from what I have read the voltage was further lowered in the 02+ years, I guess I should have looked at that a little closer while I haVader'srs 02-03 Cdi/stator setup, he needed it back quickly and time was short for me so I did not even think of looking more into that.
I forget the member on here but I was told that he replaced his damaged stator windings with a set off the 4 stroke 450r, I am sure the platedifferentrant but that could be another source for stator parts if someone burns one up, The CR125 has the same stator windings and wiring harness for the 00-01 ignitions also but the stator plate and flywheel is differant.
