Title: Bringing a 88 back to life.....
Post by: red88r on October 25, 2013, 11:58:12 PM
Here's the story on it.  Lost out the first time on Craigslist.  Guy called before me on it and was waiting for permission from his wife to buy it.  Guess what I told the seller.....I don't need permission.  I will come buy it right now.  I found it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.  Lol  Anyways he sold it and couple weeks later there it is again on Craigslist.  Guy's got it listed for more money....big surprise.  So I asked why he's selling and he said to big of a project for him.  And now that I am into I believe him.  If I didn't have alot of stuff laying around for this I probably would not have built it either.  Just maybe part it out.  I got slips for stuff bought back in 99 and from I can see it has not turned a wheel since.  All the stuff from the slips is still brand new.  Here are some pics.  It is a complete roller but everything else is in pieces in boxes.

You need to do a deal with me for it for my nephew. Lol you have to many of them already Jeremy and the boy needs to start on one of his own now. Until I can get the momey up for his aftermarket frame r.

Was it that clean when you picked it up or did you give it a major bath? It looks like there's a lot of work to be done but as least the frame and such are all in great shape and don't need powdercoating, etc.

Make me a decent offer Jamie....might let it go as is.  But I am and have been sticking money in it daily.

That is exactly how I picked it up...just dusty.  Was nice not having to spend hours cleaning something after you buy it for a change.  Yes I put different front hubs,3 calipers, engine skid, better coolant bottle, front bumper, grab bar, clutch cover, etc.  And I need alot more stuff in time.

That is one helluva starter though. Frame looks excellent. Doesn't need pc'd or anything and it even has the 3 rubber grommets under the tank. Nice score!

Isn't that how it goes for everything we want to do these days, not like about 12yrs ago when all was good with the economy and gas was cheep and so on. But it looks good and its coming along very nice.

Got some work done today in the shop.  Put on a new on/off switch and put the whole back end together so it is a roller again.  Re-zinced stock axle, lock nut and brake hub.  New bearing carrier and rear brake pads.  Rebuilt the rear caliper and bled.

Nice.  Who do you have do your zinc?  Hard to tell for sure but it looks pretty good.  I would like to do the same.  Is that a 450 grab bar?

http://crplatinginc.com/  Got the link from Dan.  Yes they do good work and quick turn around.  It should just be a AC Racing 250r model I think.  Now I'm curious......why do you ask?

Thanks.  How much did the zinc plating cost if you don't mind sharing.  The holes on the grab bar look to be elongated so I wasn't sure if you did it or bought it that way.  I saw AC racing advertise as a 250r/450r and was wondering if you had one.

I sent the axle with a pretty good box of hardware.....axle nuts, rotor hubs, caliper plates, bolts, etc.  The bill was 82 bucks.  $22 of that was return shipping though.

Thanks man!  Yes they use salt alot.  My buddy bought it from the original owner a couple years old.  It is a 1997.  Then he owned it from like 99-03?  Then my brother bought it from him after that and owned it up until 2011 when I bought it.  It was parked 03-04 winter tranny went out.  I have had it parked in winters since 2011.  It has rust....just hard to tell in the pics.  Bottom of inside doors and a little on the rockers.  Not too bad though....should stay pretty good since I am not running it in winter anymore.

Little update.....this is now for sale.  Only thing I don't probably have is a seat cover and graphics for the fenders.  Have new in box fighting red Maier fenders, gas tank cover and hood.  Got a oem headlight complete for it.  New chain and sprockets, clutch lever,85 atc motor for it in great shape-no damage.  Just bought front wheels/tires on ebay for this thing.  I want to finish it and I will if it doesn't sell.  Want to finish my 87 worse.  Your choice of different exhaust systems.  Please pm me if you are interested.

Those 88-89 are so hard to put back together, the hard part is sourcing parts for it. I am sure if 88-89 parts were easier to find there would be more riders putting these 88-89 back together. I have done 2 and I am still working on a few parts I need and of course it's the few hardest parts too find.

Post by: red88r on June 22, 2014, 12:35:37 AM
Thanks guys!  No I did not yet decide for sure on a pipe.  It will more likely be a stock set up because I don't have any real nice spare extra pipes.  I do have a real nice PSI pipe but not a matching silencer.

Is that the same tank? If so, how did you get it to shine like that. My red tank looks like crap, it's so scuffed up that it almost looks white in spots.

Pretty much done minus a few odd and ends.  Going to leave the oem 88 graphics off in case whoever buys it wants to put on a graphics kit.  No sense in wasting these if they are going to pull them anyways.
