Title: Exhaust for 510 Sabertooth
Post by: JFMachado on October 27, 2013, 08:34:40 PM
So I ended up buying the Saber motor off McCain96, extremely nice guy and clean motor. Glad we were able to make the deal. Any who I need help as far as which exhaust I need to run? I have an extra TRX9 pipe off my ESR 370 but a 370 to a 510 is a huge jump and I don't want to choke it up with the wrong pipe. I tried messaging Neil because Matt (McCain96) said that's who did all the work to the cylinder, but haven't gotten a response yet.

Getting ready to tear it down to put the rest of the transmission in before I head to Pismo next month, so kinda wanna get the exhaust issue figured out now and not last minute. Any help would be great.

Thanks, John

Inframe or a out of frame drag pipe?

Inframe I would have Arlen (LED) build it

Drag pipe I would go with CPI or Matt Shearer

I put a bigger stinger on my TRX9r and its runs awesome on the pilot 412cc cylinder. I made one for my 431 puma also with the big bore stinger but have not run it yet.

I'd like an in frame so I can still dune it. The pipe on it now I guess Matt Shearer built but it's meant for a shifter cart. Not sure if there's a way for me to modify it?

You tried to contact the correct Neil right? You need Neil from Michigan lives around the lake Orion area.

I dont think Neil from the old saber racing will much help since he has been out of the sport aong time now.

I would not expect performance tp be very good with 99% of the 250r pipes out there  the head pipes are all to small the saber has a 52mm  ID on the exhaust flange

The Saber is a race machine. Not many dune pipes made for that application. Any 250r pipes you put on is going to choke it even if the stinger portion is opened up. You would have to ask if the Puma exhaust flange will fit the Saber cylinder. The Saber exhaust flange is much bigger in diameter than the 250r flange. But the Puma exhaust flange can be ordered for 250r pipe adaptation. Just needs to be turned on the inside to match the exhaust hole size in your cylinder.

I contacted Neil from 250r.net username C-Leigh Racing, he's a moderator. I believe he's the correct one?

Is it true cart motors run at 1 speed? I was just curious how the pipe you pictured with the motor worked? It was very short!

Not 100% sure every cart I've ever ridden which isn't that many and spread over the years was press the gas and go. This motor only had 4th and 5th gear so it was able to shift. I never actually saw it perform but I'm assuming the pipe is the way it is to create a powerband in such a high gear. The carts weigh nothing and have no load besides driver so that's why it can be accomplished.

That thing may have been set up like that for one of those dirt oval track kart's with a wing kind of like a micro sprint. Only needed to shift once on the starts-restarts or maybe they would shift down one up one 2 x a lap. They push start them with utility quads. Hard to say, there are so many different style of race classes around the country.

edit=I have no clue for sure but I picture it being built for something like this.

OK, thats what I was talking about, they only use 4rth and 5th.  The OP posted a really nice pic of the motor and chrome shearer pipe before he purchased the motor only.

Yup I'm pretty sure that's the one, he said he had to push start it to get her going. Either way I gotta rip this thing down to put all the gears in. The studs holding the cylinder down are something I've never seen before. The rear 2 studs have an Allen head in the middle and the stud nuts are 12 point. I'm assuming the Allen head is to torque the extremely longer studs for the cylinder into the cases?

Search outlaw kart forum or something like that. You might be able to get something for it. They race those in nor cal chico, red bluff, etc. Years ago they raced something like that in stockton as well.

Well got her all torn down and she looks solid. Crazy case work to get this cylinder to mount up. I can tell it wasnt put to gether that long ago bc everything came apart quite easy. Wasnt expecting the 100 metal balls that fell everywhere with that lock up on there lol. As far as the tranny, looks solid. Luckily i have an extra shift drum bc it was cut and welded to only accept 4th and 5th gear and the gears themselfs look cut not to sure if i can use them? Will post pictures tomorrow when im back in the shop.

Assembling the slingshot is usually done on the bench when you can set your cases on a couple blocks sideways. After the motor is installed on the bike you turn the bike on its side to disassemble the clutch. The front handlebar on a step stool works good.

O no the motor was out of the bike on the bench I just didn't know there was all those balls in there so when I tilted it forward to get the plate off I found out real quick there was lol

Ok need a few parts to finish my 510 Sabor rebuild and 330 stroker. Got the Sabor all rebuilt but need the sleeve after the starter gear that goes between the clutch cover and starter gear on both motors with thrust washers. I need a nice shift drum that shifts smoothly. Along with 2nd gear and the thrust washer that goes after it. Also need a 88/89 swing arm bushing and the steal mounting bushings for pep shocks to mount them to the a arms and upper frame mounts. Let me know what you have.

Thanks John
