Title: Any one running Fox Floats
Post by: quadmad on October 31, 2013, 01:13:16 AM
Looking for some feed back from anyone who is using Fox Evolt shocks. What pressures you run and if you like them or not. I got Fox Evolts on my cross country R with plus 3 arms and hate them. They are back in the shop for the third time as they keep losing air and I am finding it hard to get the pressure in the Evolt chamber right.

IMO,I've had 3 sets, and didnt like any of them. They were on 450R's and an Ltr,all with Dsc. I did find it hard to get the pressures in "the sweet spot",different riding spots required different pressures and I never had time or desire to get them dialed. 2 sets leaked, one leaked air and one set leaked oil from a fitting. Checking/maintaining pressure got old,and not worth the hassle for a shock that I wasnt comfortable on. Getting a set of Axis or Pep setup for me was the way to go,and have even thought about Floats since..lol..

I've heard they tend to lose air and aren't worth the hassle. Stick with you're typical spring shock

I have the regular fox floats, I love them and havent rode anything other than dunes. They work great on my +2 a arms and my wt of 235#. II think my settings are 37-45 psi...Somewhere around there. Cant really remember, I can check them when I get home. I called a suspension guy and asked him and he gave me some starting points.

I have the Gen 2 fox float Evol(best you can buy) up front and I think they are amazing shocks for MX, cant say I do much aggressive woods riding. I have never had them leak on me and checking pressure is as easy as threading the pump to the Schrader valve on the shock body. They are very easy to get set up as you can just keep changing air pressures until you like what you got, which is impossible to do with a spring shock. Some people will always prefer a spring shock same as some people will always prefer an airshock the most important part is making sure they are set up for YOU!

P.s. I check my air pressure once every week or two and it has never changed in the time I have had the shocks. Also the Gen 3 fox's came out today I will probably be upgrading in the future.

I ran a set on my duner/hillshooter.
I ran 40psi and love them, very light weight. And haven't had any leaking problem.

My floats weighted 2.4 lbs ea. And a stock shock weights around 5.5.
So your saving over 5lbs

They are back in the shop for the third time

Same shop each time? If so, might be time to find a new shop, they shouldn't loose air at all. Is the shop just replacing seals? Might be some other part that needs replaced.

I owned a set of Evol's on one of my 450R's for a few years. They were good shocks, but could never set them dialed in perfect, they needed a revalve in my opinion. I never had ANY issues with leaks and like 89Longrod mentioned, mine would stay at the same pressure for months at a time and adjusting was pretty easy and quick. I ended up selling them to go back to a coil shock, but in a way, I wish I would have kept them and got that revalve I felt the needed. I did love how much lighter they felt compared to a coil shock, and I did like the adjustability of the air springs. Have thought about getting another set for my 250R, maybe someday.

It is the same shop doing the repairs only cos it's under warranty. Every body says run 40 psi. Thats in the main chamber what do you guys run in the Evolt chamber? Remember we can't compare it to the 450R pressure's because the R is so much lighter than a 450.

40 main, 220 evol chamber is what I ran for, and was perfect.  Mine were revalved as well

The main chamber is for ride height, so you pretty much run whatever pressure gets you the ride height you need. Once you get the ride height set, don't touch it again, should be good. Evol chamber, going to have to experiment with that one. I would say try 200 and adjust from there. To stiff, remove pressure, if you are bottoming hard, add pressure. I would even keep reducing pressure in the Evol chamber until you bottom, then you know what the min pressure is you can run. Evol's take a lot of experimenting to get what you want, I probably spent more time tuning the Evol's on my 450R then all the other shocks I have ever owned combined. I would go out and ride a test loop and after the loop, make one change and ride the loop again, just takes a awhile to get them dialed in since they are so adjustable.
