Hello.....I wanted to start a thread about my little duner project.. I looked for quite a while, found this one.....tons of parts and tires for 400...Wanted to start from scratch..

The plastic is all good, no cracks....I polish aluminum in my spare time so I finished some parts up..
(http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz146/illson23-picture/polishedparties001_zpsadc6f026.jpg) (http://s822.photobucket.com/user/illson23-picture/media/polishedparties001_zpsadc6f026.jpg.html)
I scored a cascade waterpump cover and stator cover....

I went over the parts to check and see if they are good....got 2 sets of forks...lucky I got a good set...... the one has .002 runout and the other .005 compared to .017 and .077 yikes...
The original frame had some rot that I didn't want to deal with so I ended up finding a really clean frame........sandblasted it and powdercoated it, this is columbia coatings super mirror red....I am really happy with it...

Wow, looking good. I need to find a score like that.
-
Thanks bowtie.....I will keep this thread updated.....I should have a roller by this weekend...Just waiting on my silver powder to finish should be today!!
-
Those are some good looking parts you are restoring. I am betting you spend quite a bit of time in front of the polishing wheel. Looks to be a pretty good deal with 2 motors and all. What dune tire were you going to run on the 10" wheel?
-
Thanks Pumashine..... I'm about polished out to be honest...I was going to try a mohawk style front tire and ss2's in the rear..
-
Looking good. Please keep posting update pics as you go. We all love to watch these before to after builds.
-
No doubt I will try to keep this updated....
Got my swingarm and hubs back.....
I bought a new lsr axle...not chrome like they used to be...bummer
My camera fell in hands of a 1 yr old this week...sorry about the blurry lens and black mark at bottom left.
My ss2's don't look right, I have to try a wider wheel..

It's looking killer, that is making me want to find an ATC. Problem is I would be torn between atc and missile.
-
My ss2's don't look right, I have to try a wider wheel..
You are supposed to have a 10" wide rim I believe. All my 6 sets are on 8" rims and look the same as yours. So...they look normal to me. :topsy_turvy:
-
Looking great man.
Where are you located?
-

I put the ss2's on some 10x10s and the rims stuck out maybe a half inch......some maybe 10x9's will be a happy medium
thanks for all the compliments fellas..if you guys see anything fudged just let me know!!
Rupp, I am in southern Mi....
-
wow nice work! its gonna be killer!
-
Very nice score. You have that thing looking like new already. I am always looking for a 85-86 trike. They are always too high though. Although I know where there is a complete roller for 600. I'll be wathing this build!
-
Nice build man where at in southern michigan you at I'm in Niles michigan
-
Thats looking real nice. What motor are you using?
-
Thanks for the kind words.......Well the motor is going to be mostly stock......Maybe next year I would like to get it set up with something from CPI in the 300-330 range...
Jaime- I'm in Grass Lake in Jackson county...

That baby is going to be sexy!

I don't see all the parts, just dollar bills.

Well, its always going to take a few dollar bills.....only need a few parts..it was good because the major parts that are missing I am going to buy new anyway...crank, piston
I look for the best prices and buy used when I can get away with it.....
-
Ok so I am ready to take a real inventory of my engine and its parts..The cases need a few spot welds and painted as well as the drain hole needs fixed.. I sent my counter balancer to GT thunder and they put a new bearing on for me.. I need a crank and it looks like the bottom can go together.. I want a fresh bore and piston so that will follow...a water pump too.. I have put so many of these motors together its fun at this point.. I have all new seals and gaskets. the clutch and stator are the special rubber coated ones from cometic.. I am wondering if the parts I have are the updated clutch parts, does anyone know a way to tell??

Your back wheels look a lot like the old school DICO's I have on my R & my rim's stick out about 1/2" on each side of the tire too with 10x10 wheels & 20x10x10 haulers. If your rears are DICO's, thats just the way there made. If your wheels are DICO & you don't like the look of the wheels & want to sell or trade them let me know.
-
Hey Broken1, na those are the sand tires unlimited, sand skate 2....I find em on craigslist all the time...these were used 1 time...got em for 40 bucks..

I was refering to the wheels, they look like DICO's.... I wish I could find a good set of skate 2's here for that price. A buddy of mine just got a set for 40 & they were trashed.
-
I got my rear caliper and bracket back from the soda blaster....I plan on polishing this, I know its going to be a pain....

Looking good! Now you just need some custom threads to go with it!
Here is our latest custom design for an ATC rider, his bike was not as pretty as yours!

Hey....That atc looks pretty killer to me!! So what you are saying is you make seat covers? That pipe is great, maybe a Shearer?
-

Yes, you have the flat spherical bearing at the end of the push rod. That means its the 89 version.

Hey thanks, One more thing not to worry about!!
-
I have been polishing my caliper, not as bad as I first thought... I will post pictures when I'm done with it.. I saw this locknut on ebay a while ago and really liked it, so this week I ordered one, I really like it!

the only thing about the bling on the axle,,, it gets sandblasted pretty fast if your an aggressive rider,,,
-
Man that thing is gonna be one big shine on the dunes man. looking good so far can't wait to see it finished.
-
Any updates?
-
Well......It has been super cold in my workspace, no heat. I have been doing alot of this...haha

Well warmed up a bit and was able to do a little work..I wanted to share something that was kinda funny... I needed to find some bearings for my stock chain rollers because they looked really good still and I wanted to use them. The bearing size is the same as a skateboard and rollerblade bearings...608's. Anyway I found a set of 8 bearings for 3.84 shipped to my HOUSE. This is 2 sets the sheilds are red too....the little bracket got painted..cleaned up the bolts..

-
I put new seals in my caliper and put the pistons in, I did the final polish on it.......I plan on using some blue anodized bolts to show some contrast. I'll get better pics when I can push it outside...its rainin....yuck.
(http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz146/illson23-picture/005_zps607352ec.jpg) (http://s822.photobucket.com/user/illson23-picture/media/005_zps607352ec.jpg.html)

I installed my lock nut on the axle....it seems the threaded sleeve is a tad short, it looks like the 85 version is different. The one I have is 30mm wide, if someone reads this and has a trx sleeve lying around....can you measure it for me?? thanks
-
Update, I'm working on the cases currently...needed a spot weld or two several new bearings and a bead blasting and paint. The cases should go together in a week or two. I am boring my cylinder to 87mm with new wiseco. I scored a nice low hour crank. One of my biggest problems has been finding a shock shaft in good order...rusty, rusty. I am going to send one to the west coast and have one ground and rechromed. I have plans to buy a new radiator after seeing how cheap they are. More updates asap..

So I've been buffing on my tank for 2 weeks it seems...I'm to the point that I am happy. I used 600 grit and wet sanded..then used a 6" bottet in my drill with chrome polish, mothers polish and some car polish turned out much better than I ever thought possible..topped it off with a new cap and bam!!

What is that switch for? Nice bike btw!
here ya go ...from a couple posts up
I made a kill switch plate for my kill switch I am going to use a toggle and hide it
-
Sorry I was blinded by the bling.
Can you reach it there? Seems like it would be hard to get to.
-
Hey Steve Man...I measured and did a bit of fitting first. You can reach in and kill it pretty easy, the second hole down on shroud. I'll post some pics, I just put the switch down there because I thought it was cool to kind of hide it. If anyone likes the hardware I got them from probolt..
-
I looked at the pic better and saw where it was mounted. I looked at mine and realized you could reach it through the shroud.
Very cool idea! I like it. 👍
-
Got some new silicon radiator hoses, I'm really happy with them. Finished polishing my clutch cover...good enough and fitting some of the bolts and such..

Were you able to buy those bolts/nuts anodized or did you send them in? Please tell where you got them. Your bike is looking damn good!
-
Very nice! I love the attention to detail!!
-

Thanks!!! I bought all of them @ http://www.probolt-usa.com .....they have alot of nice stuff.
-
all those bolts are aluminum instead of steel though arent they??
-
all those bolts are aluminum instead of steel though arent they??
Yes they are..you can choose the material, I run these on my big lt500 that bangs away and shakes everything loose...4 years no problemo!!
-
they sure do look good!!
-
I am really liking this build.......really sharp! Always liked the 85-86's just never pulled the trigger on one yet.
-
Thanks for all the kind words..Have been scoring some nice parts lately post some pics soon. Cylinder is at the shop getting bored. My list of needed parts is getting shorter and shorter..after I'm done I'll be sort of bummed because I've really enjoyed this build.
-
Scored some really nice billet rear hub nuts from a member..if you look closely you may see another nut!! Installed some time cert sleeves in my frame...they had been oversized to an sae size, no thanks. I made some air inlets out of aluminum I'm happy with how they came out. Some really nice parts should be coming this week, stay tuned!

I wanted to rebuild my fuel valve but the honda diagram doesn't break it down into parts.. If you look at the trx diagram you will find that the valve is broke down and you can order the internal seal. You can see the part number in the picture.

I've bought so many new parts that I haven't posted pictures of and I'm sorry about that. The deals that I have got on ebay have been really awesome....my chain and sprockets I really scored on. I got a renthal r1 chain new in the box for $38 shipped, and a sidewinder rear tool steal sprocket for $32 shipped!

So, I have bought many parts since my last post.....rear grab bar from rpm, spark arrested fmf silencer(had to for the dunes), Nelson Precision Machine exhaust mounts (which are VERY nice), scored a trinity billet case saver/sprocket cover....also I figured out that most of these radiator cap cover for a honda civic will fit our bikes! I bought a used paul turner high rev pipe that I'm having a dent repaired on currently. Tested my compression, it tested out to 180psi....going to run race gas just to be safe. I have been searching around for a nice kick starter and finally found one...it had the factory plug still in it and is barely worn inside...This bike will be started very soon!! Enjoy!!

Amazing job all around! Your work on that tank stands out most to me. I cleaned up a tank using a headlight refurbish kit thinking I was the man with half the shine. Yours looks like glass, thanks for stating your process.
-
Thank you and no problem!
-
Got my new seat foam in the mail today! My base and foam is off to ol' Boring, Oregon! I also got my shock shaft back...had it ground and chromed. Sent it out to Gary's grinding in Corona, Cal., they did a great job....95 bucks... Going to send it out and have it rebuilt..seal head, re-valve and charge. Put a new bumper on it....my compression knob looked really crappy, I didn't want to anodize it or polish or chrome....so...I used some of this spray rubber coating...it turned out really nice.

This shock shaft has been a pain in the rear...had a hard time finding one without the rust. Then most the suspension shops don't offer the service...well race tech will for 249.00, I believe they send it to the same place i did. I called baldwin and I talked to the shop fella...the guy in charge I'll say.. He treated me poorly and talked down to me...I told him about needing it re-chromed and who was going to going to do it.... He wanted me to send him my whole shock.. I told him what I was quoted for the re-chrome and he said it was awful cheap...Like he wanted to skin me, had no time for my questions and he like an ass said, Oh this is how I make money...then started talking about how much better his atc's are, and he was.. Soooooo I sent it out myself....Everyone just said to buy a works, I wanted to keep the stock shock, its a solid unit..

if you don't mind me asking, where did you find that seat foam? is it 85 or 86? thanks
-
call hi-flite/ceet. they will make u a foam for any model, in any foam density. i am having a 88-89 trx foam made right now out of soft density foam.
ps they have the nicest lady that answers the phone, it was extremely refreshing :)
your atc looks amazing, nothing worse that crappy customer service. cant wait to see it finished and rippin.

Well its sort of a mess..hi/flight just merged with ceet.. the guy I talked to said you have to use the cover they make, even for the regular foam, talked to someone else and they said the regular Hi/flight foam is the 85 foam.. So...I called cascade and I sent the whole shittery to them! They will make me a great cover for the foam however tall it is.. What I'm saying is I'm not sure you can buy a hi/flight foam and use a different cover, unless its custom..

I'm using pattern HF09D, follow the link to cascades site...its going to be mostly blue, with red and white stripe...should be killer.

Its only been a year and few months from when you started this project. It seems this is a common time frame we all work with. Everything looks great. Looks like you might still be polishing your carb.
