Title: Handlebar bend recommendations
Post by: rablack21 on November 08, 2013, 12:45:47 PM
I need to buy some new handlebars and haven't bought any in twelve years. There appears to be several different types of bends. I have no idea which bend to get. I need some input. I am mainly racing mx and have a +2+1 steering stem. I am 6 ft 1in tall. Right now, I am leaning towards Pro taper, but am open to others as well.

CR High bend seems to be a popular choice and is also what I use for mx.

With a plus 2 you should be good, depending on how high you like your bars. Im 5'11" and have always run +1" stems, both on 250r's and 450r's.

Tag seems to be good as well. Everyone seems to like the cr high bend.
Kyle are you running an extended steering stem as well?

I think mine is +1.  But honestly i dont know.  Haha... Im an adaptive rider.  I never had the money to try different things.  So i dont even know what a taller stem feels like.  I did try an ATV bend bars once and absolutely hated them.

I'm in your boat. I've never had the money to try a bunch of different bends to see what I like best......and still don't have the money! lol. So, whatever I end up getting, I will make them work. I just thought I would get people's input first. The extended stem feels really good when jumping, especially if you are kinda tall like me. I can straighten my legs a little more when jumping sometimes.

I use a stock length stem and I'm about 6'-6'1 in my riding boots.

The reason I ask is because I was wondering if the cr hi bend would make the handlebars too high with an extended stem.

CR HI is a low bend.  Check out the pics of my bikes.  CR low is almost straight across.

Im 6'1" and probably could use a +2 stem for my build.

I have cr high bend on my pro tapers and I'm gonna be using 15* flexx when bike is done. I'll give you a ride report when done. The cr high bend you can have from me Ryan if you pay for shipping. Do you have fat bar clamps already? If not I'm getting a new stem and will make you a good deal on my top clamp

Jon, right now I have and LSR stem and top clamp for 7/8" standard bars. However, I would be interested in your fat bar clamp and handlebars.

On a sadder note, after some more investigation in the garage just now, I have concluded that my handlebars aren't actually bent. I rolled my quad last weekend and bent the clamp and, so I thought, the handlebars. Appears to me it's not the handlebars, it's the stem! Jon, do you know if LSR does stem straightening? Also, do they have any warranty against bending?

Don't know if they do or not. Did you buy it new? Might need to be the original owner. Not sure. I'll get back to you in a bit when I get home
Yeah, I bought it new. I've had it less than a year. This is the first time I have rolled the quad. Surprised it would have bent so easily.

I found this link a while ago when going through the same thing with handlebar bends. I ended up with the CR hi bend using the chart and Burns is right they are a "low" bend.

Cr hi pro tapers or tag either one, stock height stem for myself also.

On another note I seen a pair of renthals break off after the crossbar clamp on a duning machine last weekend at glamis. I don't think I'll buy another set of renthals

Believe or not, when I rolled mine last weekend it bent both bolts in the anti vibe handlebar clamp kit and bent my LSR stem but my renthal handlebars are still straight as can be. Go figure.

I know this is a little old now but 14 Degree Quad Racer bend is what they recommend for the R's.

To kind of "complete the circle" here on the question of bar bend vs. extended stem length: I just want to add that I am 6'-1" and a few years ago I picked up a set of the adjustable Rox risers to put on my stock stem. I went with the 3-inch risers along with the CR hi-bend set of 909 bars I had. I could not believe how much better it made for standing and jumping! That extra length lets me stand up more, kind of correcting my posture on the machine to where hip to knee bend is alot better! Less fatigue on long rides or extended sections of aggressive riding. If you are over 5'-10", I would highly recommend looking into a longer stem or risers.

I'm 6-8 and for me the Cr high were fine on stock stem, but when I went +2 stem, I didn't like them.  Found the cr mid much better with +2
The other thing to keep in mind in the sweep or amount the bars angle back from the stem mount, for me less sweep the better
