Title: polishing parts
Post by: jamieg45 on November 08, 2013, 11:36:11 PM
Well I have started polishing some parts for myself and Jon, learned some new things and got some good advice and polishing products from Tony (Pumashine). Pics will be posted soon, but if anyone wants some parts polished up let me know. For now I can not do cases, cylinders, or hinson qc covers. I can do stock clutch covers, stator covers, throttle covers, mc covers, mc guards, stem clamps, stem to frame clamps. Rear grab bars and front bumpers and nerfs and rad shrouds as well.

Good for you Jamie. That was nice of Tony, to share those trade values. What is the issue, with polishing the cylinders?

To work efficiently you need 2 machines or 4 wheels. Smaller and larger...coarse and fine. The OEM cylinder is very rough compared to pro-x. All the sanding cartridges and tools take a while to accumulate. He did a good job touching up Jons cylinder!

Cool stuff Jamie!  I always end up with black compound all over myself after touching up a bike!.. but I'm addicted to shiny things.. any tips on what kind of mask and headwear you've found to work the best?

I bought a -1 Hinson pedal a while back and Jamie polished it for me. Here's a pic. I'm sending a bunch of other stuff so I'll post another pic when I get that stuff back.

I just wear a white mask that forms to my faceand a pair of safety glasses when I do the polishing. So no breathing it and no black boogers either.

It's patients and persistence, and a loosely sewn wheel too. I will be finishing them up this weekend for the guy and I will post pics of the outcome for you all. I need to find a little counter top oven so I can heat the parts for polishing, does anyone have one the want to donate because they dont use Iit anymore or they got a new one.

Keep at it Jamie...Higgy   who's name is Kieth drove down from Portland to check out the buffing lathes. He does his polishing as you do with the small machine. Don't remember if I gave him some of the compound but he was saying it was hard to get the same shine as I was getting. With a small machine you have to be persistent as heck. Damon AKA Traxman polished Wayne's cases and cylinder with a small machine also... It can be done...Just have to keep at it.

Don't you have an oven in your house?! That what I use.

Post up what you get.. I'd be interested to see the setup and cost for a dedicated oven.

It's just a mini oven that will be able to hold stator covers and clutch covers and I hope spindles as well.

Jamie. Parts look great. When you have the extra cash go pick up a good respirator the dust from polishing is not good for you at all, and to get the black stuff off your skin, a cheap makeup remover works great makes that stuff just melt right off

I wear a mask and a safety glasses and most of the time long sleeve shirts too. If it's not to hot in the house. But I will do so as soon as I can, I am thinking about building a shed to do all of this in insulated and heated and vented for doing this.

Jaime, you're doing a good job. This polishing parts, sucks balls! I polished up a couple of shrouds, flat and easy surface. I had to take a handful of Motrin
afterwards. Hard work. :culpability: It is rewarding when you finish.
