Great story with this motor! A student/client of mine called me and said he had this old motor from the 80's a buddy just gave him. (he had no clue what it was). He described to as a kick start, 6 speed Honda motor. My ears raised… He said he thought it was a two stroke motor and he was thinking I might be interested. If not he wanted to "try and put this thing on a go cart!" (I shriveled but kept my composure). A friend of his was a small engines teacher at a tech school back in the 80's. His friend owed him $$ for 20 years! He said the ex-teacher friend was cleaning out the attic and he saw this motor and thought he could pay his debt by giving him this motor. He agreed.
I went and saw it yesterday. It is a brand spanking new 250r motor. Never ran. Not seized. clean as a whistle. The Keihin carb never had fuel in it! Not a scratch on the motor paint. Never been mounted!!
He was told by the teacher that it was on the school work bench for years as a display at the tech school. (The bolts and fasteners look like they have never been touched). Honda supposedly donated a bunch of these motors to schools for teaching students about two strokes. He said once they banned the atc's and two stroke motors Honda freely allowed some of these motors to be used for educational purposes. (Anyone ever hear of Honda doing this??)
So I hope you can see the uploaded pictures.
My final question is, What do you guys think this is worth?

With me not being a historian Tony, How would you know it is an 85?
-
did you buy it?!
No but I am! Just trying to see if it is a dream or what it may be worth before I make an offer.

After the ATC ban, they cut the frames up and pulled the ATC motors out and donated them to schools

I wonder how many more are out there. This is probably the nicest I've seen in a while. I've watched and bid on motors similar to this and they tend to go for $1,100 to $1,400 on ebay. You might get $1,200 from a rider, maybe more like $1,600 from a collector in my opinion.

i paid 1000 for a new 86 never fired

Back when I was in high school we had five 250R and five 350X motors that had been donated to the shop class. They had already been there 10 years before I got there.

Man, all we had were old briggs and Stratton 5hp engines lol

That's sweet!

Did you buy it?
-
Did you buy it and if so for how much. That is a rare find anymore and it needs to be mounted on a pumashine engine stand for sure.

If anyone is interested in one I know a guy with one I can get you hooked up with him. I saw it in person it's beautiful. I'm not a historian but I can let the two of you talk. It is a spotless motor.
-
Guy also has a half dozen 350x motors for what it's worth

Any clue what he might want for it?

Believe it was 12 or 1400 and he isn't opposed to shipping. He's an E-bayer lol

soon to be my new motor :applause: the right thing to do I think is to put it in a restored ATC. I'm not going that route. this one is going directly to LED and then into a Laeger frame. my dream of having a 100% new 250R is almost complete.

At least it is going to a good home. What top end are you going with? I would love to find one of these mint motors to put in my 88.

I hope you show off a picture when it's all done. I love those all black motors.

I've been documenting and collecting parts for years. every time I get close to being "finished" I change direction. Being anal as I am everything has to be done 100% right. can't wait to be finally done and then beat the crap out of it. I will post pics when all is done.

Joe nice scoop! That ol' engine of Steve's would go good in a laeger frame. I regret not being faster and richer when he sold that thing! Lol

that motor ended up in a stock framed bike.

Joe you should post some of your collection. I'd love to see them, and be bitter with jealousy lol

Just a note to all the veterans and knowledgeable enthusiasts here. This had been a learning process for me. I just ran into this motor and had no idea what it was. That's the greenhorn still left in me. I love the R's and never really want anything else but It's not quite an absolute obsession to me. So with that said as the veterans already know and were correct in stating, it is a 85 ATC motor with 85 carb that is being sold to Croat1. I have learned a lot and wrote the original post out of excitement instead of verifying what the hell I had first. I will say this…. It's gorgeous for 30 yrs old.

Getting a mint motor no matter what the year is exciting 30 years after the fact. I am glad this motor is going to be USED and not sitting in hibernation. :quad:

Exactly Tony! Thats why I decided to sell it to Joe. He was going to do the motor justice. It was hard parting with it. But it's in good hands. Can't wait to see the 30yr old get a facelift. Should be pretty when complete.
Joe... your welcome. Have fun in Cozumel! I miss that place.
