I've been on the lookout for Roll XC A-Arms with no luck so I'm moving forward with what I got laying around the garage. I was hoping to match up my Roll no link with some Roll arms. Oh well maybe another day. I'm using an Aren Bros frame (no clue what year) as a starting point and the original motor out of my 86. I mounted up the Laeger +2's and the Laeger swinger. Front shocks are Axis & Rear is stock. Going with the stock airbox, rad, etc. Have a Houser stem and a Clarke natural tank. Got a new set Red plastics and a black hood. I have a nice stock axle and some 4/1 shamrocks that I'll be using. I plan to ride this ASAP so I'm not gonna worry about color coordination at all...LOL.
Got a plan until the money runs out:
> Razr2's and use the good old shamrocks.
> LED 300kit > Now it will be a PV265 pc2000 > Actually running the stk 86...lol.
> Pipe/silencer - Duncan race factory finish > Now it will be FMF/LRD
> Laeger arms and swinger.
> Axis all the way around. > Now will use 88 in the rear.

HMF iq for a trx450 (Borich XC). Not a direct bolt up....need to drill new holes on the bottom and run 1/4 spacers.

Gotcha. I remember it now. Looks sorta like the 450r IMS i sold but this one looks better! NICE!
-
Wes Stone has a brand new set of Roll XC arms on eBay.
Thanks for reminding me Dan. I've probably looked at those a hundred times and even made an offer pretty close to his asking price. I messed up earlier this year when I could have bought a brand new set for $825. Now I have an unrealistic market price stuck in my head.

Looks great... Ill be watching this one closely!

Nice build what frame is leaned up against the wall. Looks to be a lsr, older one.

Correct. Its a LSR 97 serial 0032 standard link. Waiting in the wings until I find the right deal on a LSR swinger and arms.
-
Narrowed her up a bit. Took the trx450 components off and replaced with the 89 stuff. Gives me an inch back plus adds some adjustability in the front end. The 450 stuff will have to wait on Roll XC's.

Looking good!!!

Before pics of the engine. I'm going with the Bill Ballance LED deal. Think I'm just gonna roll with the case damage....it's been that way for almost 15 years anyhow. Plus I won't get that sick feeling the next time I throw a chain.

Nice build so far, I'm jealous of the Roll no-link swinger! You definitely should grab those +1 Roll A-arms from Wes you will probably not see a set like them again for a long time.
Have you tried 04/05 450R spindles? I thought these were the ones to run because they are closer to 250R/400EX geometry and in 06 Honda changed the spindles and they didn't handle or turn as well as the 04/05.

They are 06. They are a .5" wider than the stock 89 R's. So it was wider than I wanted with my Laeger +2's and 4/1 wheels. They work awesome on Rolls. I have a set of Roll +3's w/400ex and YZ brakes on my other bike. The 06 look identical. Yeah I keep looking at those Roll XCs. Maybe I'll hit the lotto tonight....LOL.
-
So those Laeger a-arms are +2? What length shock do they take?
If you end up getting the Roll XC arms I might be interested in buying those Laegers

i would love to get ahold of an LSR.

They measure in at 18 3/4 eye to eye. Double checked with Axis the other day just to be sure.

Also heard 19" for Laeger +2's so who knows. Arens XC may be going in a different direction!
Just got these babies. New XC's and an Extended Stem. These would bookend with my Roll no link very nicely but I'm gonna try a Roll trx450 instead. Back on the hunt...LOL.

bnau, you don't procrastinate or mess around. im very impressed.

-
Bought a complete trx450 rear end today and a CRF450 brake/reservoir. Probably gonna stick with the Laeger rear end for now and mess around with the 450 stuff on a 88/9 frame until I figure out exactly what needs done to linkage and shock mount. Once I get it right I'll have the work done on the Arens by one of the local suspension fabricators like JB or six5.

It's coming along. Got some parts coming and hope to have a roller by next w/end.
In case anyone ever wondered....
04/05 450R > Stock swingarm length is 18.5"
06/14 450R > Stock swingarm length is 19.0"
86/87 250R > Stock swingarm length is 19.5"
88/89 250R > Stock swingarm length is 18.5"

Tires arrived! Going with Razr2 up front and Razr 6 ply out back.

-
Those Razr 2 fronts are just sweet great grip and durable! I used to run them on my old XC Yfz.
-
where did you get the tires
Motosport.com. I usually buy from Rocky Mountain but they wouldn't apply the discount on tires so MS.com was cheaper this time....lol. And the rest of the drive line. Nothing fancy. Trying 13/37 gearing with the 20" rears. Had to get some Nacs stuff too!

I have iRazrs on my 400ex and love them. I was debating very hard between these and ITPs' gncc but I figured there has to be a reason everyone runs this setup. Was gonna get the Razr2 rears but they seemed like they'd get too much bite.

Some more odds and ends for the build. Got some parts from Eric. My kids went crazy over the packaging. I'm still finding popcorn three days later! Parts were perfect....

I'm really looking forward to trying this out. IMO....best deal out here (quality/price).

Gave up on PRP so I'm trying TnT....seems like a good product and still made in USA. Burgard was my first choice, also USA product, but the web site wouldn't work and the dude on the phone was less than interested in taking my order. I'll have to deal with him eventually though if I'm gonna get one of their QC conversions done....or maybe CT still does them???

Looks like it is still Christmas by your house! Lol Nice parts!
-
The kids are enjoying it. The wife...well she's getting skeptical that selling my YZ covered all this stuff.
-
I hear ya on that. My wife has been watching me like a hawk since I bought my last one.
-
Finally got back to working on this. The axle carrier and brake stay were very nice fitting parts. Mounted up the bars, fenders, and grabbed a seat from the stock pile. The black bumper has been replaced with the AC from my 400ex. Someone was smoking something when they built this frame....lol. 250r bumpers don't line up at all. 450 bumpers are close but require some mods. My 400ex is a perfect match except the bottom needs spacers. Here's a couple picks from today....

Looking good!!! Glad they made it there safe, I didnt have a chance to package them, so you can thank Ups for the peanuts, LOL!!!
-
They worked out for me since my frame from hell doesn't have tabs to mount the lower fender braces. Just another thing on the list to deal with. Hope to get those shrouds mounted up some time today.
-
Its gettin there bud!!! Don't you love gettin new parts in the mail it really is like x-mas!! So I saw that radiator overflow bottle, where did you get that???
Thanks Higgy
-
He got it from me, its a Polaris Predator bottle. Walsh also sells them, although more expensive due to the Walsh sticker on them..lol

Came with the shroulds that Eric 05450r sold me. Polaris predator bottle. Dime a dozen on ebay (usually). Walsh sells it complete....not sure how that compares to buying the parts OEM...

I love those wheels just way out of my price range.
-
Me too....:). This build was supposed to use parts laying around the garage. I'm down one nice Yz250, a truck cap, and my 400ex is probably next to pay for the engine. This thing better be worth it!

once i got my 250r my 400ex sat around collecting dust and eventually i sold it. a 400ex for a 76x76 250r engine is worth it to me.haha

Fourwerx in the house! New seat and CF flat hood for Maier/OEM fronts. Picked up a near perfect 89 seat pan....now all I need is foam. Guess I'm gonna try Quad tech foam. The hood is my first CF woven part and I can't stop looking at it...

You just convinced me to get the Fourwerx seat. I was looking at those earlier. Very slick
Do you know if Fourwerx still makes the raised/scooped hood?

They make a couple styles for the Fullbore fenders. They make the one I got and another one with the nose piece for the OEM/Maier fenders. Jay the owner was top notch to deal with. I'll be doing some more business with them for sure.

Placed my order with Arlan today > Sphynx 300 PV, XC Port, VForce3, 38PWK ar, Hand Coned Pipe, and LED silencer.
-
Omg you got to have one of the sickest build going! Everything your doing is like my dream set up!! Tis thing is gonna be sweet!
-

Nice! You won't regret dealing with Arlan. I'm very interested on how that 300 performs.
Very sick build going on. Keep it up.
-
For sure. Hope to be ridding this thing before tax day.
-
Hey buddy,
I sent you a text.
-Steve
-
Snow and non-stop work travel haven't been kind to this build. I do have plans to finish but this will head in a slightly different direction. The LED 300pv engine and Hipers are for my next XC build (gonna be sick). This build will become a Duncan bike...lol. Parts on the way and still tracking for early April.

I'm hoping to go with a Duncan setup or LED on my next build.
Looks great!
-
I should have your piston and stuff later this week. Once it gets here ill put it all together. I'm going to clean the PC up and clean the PV. Cody honed it for me the other day. I'll text you pics once I get the engine back together. :)

You hold the keys my friend. Kind of cool that more than half the parts came from folks on the forum. Had to Ebay the rest but it's all from scratch no donor bike. Now all I need is an 89 length Axis rear and I'll be set....need that one last find of the season from you :)
-
Added a new part. Should be back at it in a few weeks. This guy is for my next build.

Mine is a Paul turner hand made #46 pipe.

What size Duncan cylinder are you using?
-
Man I need a setup like this lol. Also, that roll pedal!
-

This is going to be a 265 but I want to be a 275 when I grow up.
-
This is going to be a 265. I have a 275 on the line. I have my sights set on a family of Duncan's I suppose.
It's nice having connections;)
-
It's nice having connections;)
Yeah. Especially one that has Duncan on speed dial.
-
Looks like this is going to be a nice build with the parts you are collecting so far. You will absolutely love the motor. My old man has my brother's old 340. And now I have a 265 going in my 87. They are a nice piece. Btw I also have alot of connections......:wink-new:

Im really liking the sweetness in this thread! Cant wait to see more.

Im really liking the sweetness in this thread! Cant wait to see more.
All was good until I saw some of the bikes in the XC thread and got new ideas. I still have some collecting to do but I'm getting really close to putting these parts in motion.
-
Haha im sure we have all seen something that we liked and shifted the build a little! Im sure what ever you end up with is gonna be nasty. Ive always wondered how those paul turner pc2000 motors run.
-
You'll love the PC2000. The 275 I have absolutely flies, one of the funnest motors I've ever ridden
-
Seems to me like the Ohio and Pennsylvania guys are going to have to meet up and do some XC riding?!?!
-
I've lovin all the new parts! I may have a ROLL shifter for ya, but I'm not sure I wanna part with it just yet!
Its at the chromer right now!!
Thanks Higgy
-
PC2000 PV265 mounted up (thanks 312r1) and ready to roll. Still need to install the CR ignition and clean up some spots on the motor. This will be mated up to a PT Factory Race03 and Duncan tuned PJ 37.3.

Very Nice!! Sounds like a Great set-up!
Thanks Higgy
-
Looks good Bob, now take some mothers and polish up the head. ;)
-
I'm digging the fender/hood setup....Only thing that would be better is a Naca CF or fiberglass hood for the Maiers. Working on getting one made.
(http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af169/Bnau267/Parts/image_zps48531499.jpg) (http://s1004.photobucket.com/user/Bnau267/media/Parts/image_zps48531499.jpg.html)
-
So those are the Maier's huh? How do you like them?
-
I have a set of new OEMs clouding my view on aftermarket plastics. Knowing those OEMs will never see dirt, or may even leave my possession soon, these Maiers are the next best thing in my opinion. Although, I'd love to have a set of full cut FBs to compare with. My only concern is fender flex. Fit and finish is good but I swear some fit better than others. I'll have some custom brackets/bracing made to stiffen up the front so the CF hood doesn't absorb any tension from flexing. For the rears, I'll probably get a factory43 grab bar since they have built in braces (I think).
-
That's going to look great.
-
Tied some stuff up yesterday - wiring harness, Rez bottles, carb, and some other odds and ends. Not sure if I'll run the tech3's or the shamrocks. Leaning towards the shamrocks. Leaving the 86 engine in here for now. Working on coming up with a way to run the stock snorkel setup. First thing first is to get a new headstay built.
Here's how she sits....
(http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af169/Bnau267/Aren%20xc%20build/image_zpsd40b6389.jpg) (http://s1004.photobucket.com/user/Bnau267/media/Aren%20xc%20build/image_zpsd40b6389.jpg.html)
-
Shamrocks!
-
So here's the annoying snorkel issue that all you Arens Bros owners know very well. PDXTRX is building me a new one that will essentially match the mounting points of my Arens yet have the U design like my Lonestar while maintaining the beefy Arens design. This will get me through the summer. I'll have mounting tabs added to the frame this Fall when I tear it down...

Looking forward to it!

Jason will fix you right up..One thing I see that would drive me nuts in person is your engine bolts and swingarm pivot bolt aren't going the same direction. Left to right.

Good point. I'll take care of that when I install the chain slider.

Seeing what the Red fenders look like as opposed to the white ones in the other picture. Not too bad! Work travel is killing me but all remains on track for April completion.

Finally a Roller! Shamrocks in front and Tech3's in rear...long story but the Hiper fronts were YZ450. That's what I get for buying stuff and sticking it in a corner. The distributor is making good so no harm no foul. Just a delay. Sticking with the Red fenders because they absolutely grew on me. Sticking with the Shamrocks because they freaking work...lol. Will probably run a different set of hubs as I'm not digging the color combo. Haven't put the grips on because I'm not sure I'm happy with the bars. They are ATV high but I'm looking for another .5 to 1". Regardless, I'll get it running by next w/end or the weekend after. I'm probably going with the stock 88 style graphics to keep the look pretty simple. The only major thing left is sending the suspension out to be refreshed and set up.
Here's what it looks like today....

There is no such picture. There never really finished. Lol

Looking forward to it!
Got some parts today! This should allow my snorkel to work on the Arens. Nice work PDXTRX.

Sweet man! Thank you again.

Damn dude i had to sell most of my stash of R parts for bills and now I'm building it back up and getting ready for some new builds. Nice work and keep if up man.
-
Added a new part. Should be back at it in a few weeks. This guy is for my next build.

Luck. Wanted to get the hard parts out of the way in case I ever get the chance to build a full Roll.

@bnaue267, dang straight its a hard part. I was able to snag a brand new shifter for $50 a week or so before they jumped to $200. I guess that makes me happy.

A while back I decided to run my 86 stock engine. Had it out today ripping around and it ran pretty good. Only upgrades are a FMF pipe, LRD silencer, and Boyesen pro series reeds....fun little bike. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I added some old school flare with this JP racing QC.

Still need the 88 graphics. Then it is done....finally.
So happy to have warm weather again.

Man that turned out sick. I'm still trying to find a nicely setup aftermarket xc R.
-
Loved following the build. Nice job! Looks super!
-
This bike looks awesome!! Off topic question and might of been answered before, but what brake lever is that?? It doesn't look like anything like a normal R lever.

cr250 if I remember correctly.
-
Does the arens frame require this lever?? I still have the stock R lever on my arens frame.

Cr250 is what they normally use but mine is a CR125. I have a new YZ250 lever left over from my bike and it fits just about perfect.

Could you post some pics of these other levers? I used a 96 cr250. Always looking for a billet lever. Maybe one of these other years/model might have something available. ..

Final touch....
New OEM 88 decals! Makes it look so much better. Anyone know where to get the white rear fender stripe? You know the trap shaped thing that sits on the top outside of the fender (88 style).

Looks complete now....are those aftermarket stickers or nos ones and if aftermarket where did you get them?

Here is a YZ 250 (2006) that I'm using on my other Arens. I like this the best. I'm using the YZ OEM mounting bolt. There are several aftermarket lever options for the YZ250 and some are length adjustable as well as spring loaded. I'll be getting an aftermarket one eventually. The only issue is that you run out of adjustment if you want to run the pedal above the peg. I'm gonna try a few things but ideally all we need is for Pumashine to make a stock replacement Clevis that is 3/8" longer.

You can get a 6mm coupling nut to thread to the existing shaft and use as a spacer. http://www.asmc.net/m6x1-metric-coupling-nut-coarse-zinc-plated-pk-25/ Just a thought.

Ordered a crf450 clevis today. It looks like it will work perfect. If not, a billet one will do the job for sure as they are longer and designed for a smaller shaft so I'll be able tap it to accept the R shaft. Trying my $5 fix first...

Thats one question the guys down at the atv repair shop could answer. They see all kinds of different models and would have an idea of the similar part that would meet your needs. I just know R parts and how to get them to work correctly. You should be able to get 1 coupling nut from mcmaster-carr for a $5 fix also. That link was to just show my theory. Glad you found the part you were looking for.

You Pumashine and croat1 Joe got my wheels spinning so I thank you. Heck I'm probably gonna bore out the pedal and drop a needle bearing in at the pivot.

Switching it up a little....
