Is anyone using something other than the Hinson? I know Hinson is the best but I see Wiseco, Barnett, Moose and Magnum so I was curious to see if it's Hinson or bust. I also noticed that they don't come with the gear installed. Is that difficult to get swapped over? Thanks.

I run the magnum and it's just as good as barrnet just no paying for the name. As far as the gear you will have to drill out the rivots holding it onto the stock basket and take the rubber blocks and attach it all to the new basket

I run PE billet basket in my puma and its been a good one so far..... and its not been an easy summer...lol
-
X2 spirit and I put the wammy on it this riding season...PE gets my penny till proven other wise....
-
lifetime warranty too..http://www.peracing.com/Billet-Aluminum-Clutch-Basket-PEBCB1003.html

Thanks for the info. Probably go with a PE and see how it turns out.

Is this company still in business?

I used to do Hinson until the baskets with stainless steel inserts came on the market. These inserts will never wear out like the rest. Barnett is what I'm going with from now on. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barnett-Billet-Clutch-Basket-Honda-ATC250R-85-86-TRX250R-86-89-/291263171069?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43d0a349fd&vxp=mtr

Those Barnett baskets look really nice & so does the price tag.

Wow I really like that. Could give us 2-strokers a little more rotating mass for smoother power as well.

I agree ^^^^. This will be my next basket also. I don't think that the Hinson are really all that strong. I do think they were the strongest available back when people first started racing R's.

Speaking of baskets, how much free play (wiggle) is "normal" to expect on the basket after the clutch plates are removed?

Do the steel inserts wear at all on the fiber engagement ears?

Do the steel inserts wear at all on the fiber engagement ears?
I don't believe the ears have fiber on them. That part of the disk (tabs) are bare aluminum.

My wording wasn't clear. I meant the ears on the "fibers" meaning the clutch fiber plates, not that the ears themselves are fiber.
The aluminum of the basket gives way to the steel clutch fibers, so changing that material to a potentially harder one could have some effect on the clutch fiber engagement area. If I were to guess, I'd say it would be negligable because of the amount of oil in that area, but was curious if anyone had taken any measurements and made an observation maybe.

I have ordered this basket, from my experience in engineering I could probably do some testing to determine wear characteristics, however, I'm looking at it from a mechanic's perspective; everyone replaces the fibers / disks first, I find it unlikely that the fiber ears will fail before the clutch surface itself. Also, the basket is the most expensive item, I would prefer it to outlive the disks by a large factor. I could do some hardness testing on the fiber ears and compare it to the the plates on the basket. I'll let you guys know if i do.

I have ordered this basket,
Which one? I put a Hinson on when my first basket became severely grooved and not operating smoothly anymore. After 5 years the Hinson looks identical to the stock one I had replaced. Grooves just as deep as the stock one. So I don't think they are any harder than stock. The new one with the stainless steel liners look like the basket will never become grooved again. I see this as a permanent fix. You should be able to wear out several sets of friction disks with the stainless inserts on these baskets. Stainless is 6X as hard as aluminum and should never wear out in this application. In other words the stainless will not wear like aluminum on aluminum. If a basket without stainless liners lasted 5 years I would expect the ones with stainless steel liners to last well over 30 years

I think you guys are basically saying the same things. And I agree as well. They wear characteristics of the ss will be far superior to the aluminum. And like Tador said, I would rather change a bunch of clutch discs before changing one clutch basket.

Yeah, everyone is on the same page but speaking a different language haha. P
umashine, I bought the Barnett with the liners.
