Title: Lower back relief/tips?
Post by: red88r on July 07, 2013, 09:59:06 PM
So after having off all last week I must have overdone it.  I cut trees down by my parents house, washed and waxed vehicles/bike.  Mowed alot of lawn/trails.  Put my Harley bacj together.  Went 4 a mountain bike ride every day-8miles.  I'm sure you catch my drift.  I usually throw my back out somehow 1-2 times a year.  I have had some lower back problems since high school.  Used to weigh 160lbs. back then and now weigh 220lbs. but I am 6'4" so it is about normal.  It never used to be this low in my back though.  It actually makes me stand crooked.  Have not been to the chiropractor in 6mo.  Does anyone have any ideas, tips or tricks to share?  I am stretching it out alot but not much relief.  Also icing it alot.  Will be going to the back doc tomorrow for sure.  Thanks in advance guys/gals.  Btw I'm not a pill popper. :wink-new:

You're probably not going to want to hear what I have to say but also being 6'4 210, seeing chiropractors dealing with migraines, taking pain meds, I've had my share of back problems. Working out has been the best thing for my back. I know not all situations are the same, just giving you insight as to what works for me. It sounds like you could have just overdone it also.

Keep your hips and hamstrings loose if you can't touch your toes your not stretching enough.

depends on what minerals your deficient in when my back hurts its cause im low of magnesium, excercise to strength the back muscles helps alot, sleeping position, chiropracter ona somewhat regular basis.

for rubs aspecreme from the pharmacy is great no burning just topical pain relief that soaks into the muscles

If you're getting lower back pain/problems from being active you should look at your core/ab strength in addition to stretching.

I've heard that stretching really helps too. That's something I need  to try myself. I hope I didn't waste my money but I picked up a inversion table yesterday.

I have similar problems about twice a year... My local chiropractor suggested I start laying with a pillow under my hip for 15 minutes at a time, to force the muscles to stretch.  I can then lay on my right side, curl my left leg over my right and get everything to realign by forcing my shoulders back flat to the floor, holding my left leg over my right... Then repeat the other direction.  With some practice I can make my lower back sound like a Carhart zipper when the vertebrae pop back into place.

I use a inversion table when i feel like my hip/spine are out.... The thing works wonders... Being in shape and working out helps out your back alot as well.

Pretty much what everyone else is saying - stretching and working out. I had back issues for a while in my early 30's and worked with a physiotherapist and developed a stretching and workout routine that has kept me pain free for years.  Guys naturally have issues with having tight hamstrings and if you sit allot - desk, driving, etc, your hamstrings tighten up even more causing them to pull down on your lower back.  If I don't keep up on my exercise and go all out some weekend by Monday I can hardly walk, so back to the stretching and it usually clears up in a day or two.

Wow alot of replies.  Thanks for all the tips and advise everybody.  One thing that I'm sure does not help my situation is I dislocated and broke my right hip racing mx in 99.  Buddy got it all on tape.  So ever since then I do sleep with a pillow between my knees at night when I sleep on my side.  Went to the back cracker today and feel better.  A long way to get back to normal though.  That is my downfall stretching.  I usually just rely on my muscles to get the job done and my back pays for it.  I don't race much anymore so I am not in the shape I used to be in.  Also getting old is a PITA!

olschoolr-let me know how the table works for you...might go buy one soon.
rupp250-that sounds like a great idea!
burns-maybe I should just go buy a table....beats hanging from the garage rafters like a monkey:frown-new:

I also don't have any excuse for not working out besides the fact I work second shift.  I hate getting up in the morning to workout.  I do have a total gym,elliptical,treadmill,100lb boxing bag, and a weider home gym contraption.  I just prefer to be outside rather than in the basement.

The inversion table works wonders, the stronger your core is the more it can support your back/spine, stretching is huge also.

I'm 6'6'' 235, so needless to say my back is always sore

For my training for the 2013 season i started doing some lower back exercises because last season my lower back would get tired.  Especially for the few harescrambles i did.

Okay well i started to type out how to do the exercise and it wasn't sounding the best.. erm... look at the pic linked below for the best description.

Yes I see what you mean Kyle.  I have one of those big medicine balls too.  I got a bunch of exercises to do from my chiropractor also.  Time to get back into better shape.  Can not stand being laid up.  For all you guys with the inversion tables....where did you buy them?  Wife and I are going to get one for me.  Then I can be as flexible as her.  Well maybe not that flexible.:biggrin-new:  I guess I am surprised that there are that many of you that have/had issues.  Makes me feel a little better just to know that it can be fixed basically.  Sucks can't even ride aroung the yard right now.  Thanks for all the replies everybody.  They are all great ideas.
