Title: Quad Friendly Towns
Post by: bnau267 on January 25, 2014, 07:28:14 PM
OK this might seem strange but I'm really curious about which towns in which states are quad friendly.  I've heard many times that some communities allow quads to to run somewhat freely on dirt roads to gas up, bounce between trails, etc, etc, but have never been able to get real life examples.  Let us know if you live in one.

A buddy went to the Hatfield McCoy trails in WV and they ride roads freely there, btwn trails and to gas up through town. Not sure if it's legal or what but everyone does it.

In my hometown you can ride them around on the streets as long as you have a helmet and you are not going crazy with it

I know you asked for friendly towns but I'll say junction city, ks is not. My neighborhood is severely under developed and I was riding the KFX400 with my daughter and I was surrounded by three cops. $146 ticket!

My hometown of Crosby, TX is a hit or miss. Small neighborhoods and country area is fine. Middle of the city is risky.

South Dakota seems pretty libertarian on it. I was in Watertown (pop. 30k-50k idk) I saw guys on banshees several times riding right the main drag in traffic.

sure is legal.  but remember to obey all traffic laws.  awesome to ride the trails and then hit the paved road to get gas/food.

My home town of Monroeville is pretty developed and any venturing onto the road will result in a chase or ticket.  I will point out that the chase aspect only occurred when I was a teenager.  Here in Western PA, there are many rural areas with dirt roads and it depends on the mood of the State cop or local law enforcement but generally not a good idea. However, there are fund raising activities on a regular basis "poker runs" and the small towns typically open roads to bikes, quads, and side by sides during those weekends.

Over here in SE ohio its "illegal" to ride on the roads. Usually dont get bothered on the dirtroads and if u get spotted on the pavement you better ride fast.

Around here we can ride some of the county backroads at 25mph.  There are no public trails here.  Getting fuel would be hard to do but it does get pretty boring riding so slow on concrete!

West Virginia has pretty lax laws about ATV use on public roads.

I can ride, right out of my yard, in to farm fields and groves. Local police don't bother us. The county popo, has a few officers with issues. But for the most part, we ride freely! :quad:

I still ride on my streets even after I got a ticket.  I'm not riding down the dusty gravel road or driving 30 minutes to tune my bike.  Now the exception I will be making is when Dan and I both get are bikes tuned up.  Someone get him a carb!  Dan, I hope you're reading this!!!

We had of enough snow on the roads this morning to justify a quick spin around the neighborhood.  The R stayed home but the Grizzly was out taking advantage of the situation.

Sounds like fun.  Too much fun with the R when it's slick out!  Nasty clean up though.

Quite frankly I'm sick of the snow and want some good riding weather.

I want to live in South Dakota.  When we are out there with our bikes we have seen quads running down the streets in Rapid City,Deadwood,Sturgis, etc.  The laws on alot of stuff are more laxed out there for sure.  Like no turn signals on your chopper.

This weekend a friend and I were able to drive his RZR across our entire town with completely snow covered roads. It was pretty awesome. There was a good 5-6 inches on our roads.

During the summer last I checked Ohio had a 2-wheels on 2-wheels off policy. Not sure if that's changed. We can get to just about anywhere provided we don't abuse it and people don't call the cops

waynoka OK is pretty friendly to a point.  surprised no one mentioned that.  the only other place I have seen compareable is YUMA AZ.  I at a truck stop getting fuel to finish the trip to Glamis and guys were pulling up on three wheelers and quads to get fuel and then take off riding down the street.  desert riding spot was close by I was told.

My hometown in suburbs of Houston was real ATV friendly back in the early 90s, but getting annexed by city of Houston put an end to that!  :mad-new:

i ride from my house into the woods but not too often as i am still apprehensive.  it seems ok cause im friendly with most of the neighbors.  but its the southern suburbs of SW PA a mile from the washington county line so that may be of my benefit.
